‘ACCORDING to one of the people behind a survey into what is cool and what is not, being cool is “being able to zig when everybody else zags”.

‘The lady in red…’

We take Stephen Cheliotis, of marketing firm Superbrands, to mean that it’s good to go against the grain.

Which should mean that it’s cool to shout “Let’s bomb Iraq”, cooler still to not think Tony Blair is trustworthy and positively uber cool to dress up in a red tunic and jodhpurs and chase a fox over farmland.

It is also cool to be called Boris Johnson, the only politician to make it onto the cool list.

This leads the Guardian to instigate an email poll is which it asks: “Is Boris Jonhson cool?”

The obvious answer seems to be “yes”, he is.

But take note of that earlier observation, lest you look uncool. If Boris is said to be cool, and universally accepted as being so, then he is, by definition, uncool.

We urge you to vote “no” in the Guardian’s great debate. And then ask why the paper has not asked the same question of Tony Blair?

The Prime Minister, who has flown in the face of much popular opinion and fact, is surely the ziggiest, zaggiest, coolest person around…’
