But that is more than can be said for the new Eurostat Yearbook, which features on its cover a map of the 25 countries of the European Union.

At least, most of the 25 countries – because Wales appears to be missing.

Instead, the map of the western coast of Great Britain shows a fairly straight line between Chester and the Severn Estuary, with only sea to the west of Offa’s Dyke.

At a stroke of the pen, 8,000 square miles of land, 2.9 million people and a lot of nervous sheep have been wiped out.

And Tim Allen, of Eurostat, is at a loss to explain how.

“Quite frankly,” he tells the Times, “I don’t know how you go about finding a map of Europe without Wales on it.”

It was, he added, a design fault and the culprit was being sought in the corridors of the European Commission.

Prime suspect is said to have red hair, to work as a quiz show hostess and answer to the name of Ann…’
