Of Rats And Shrews

‘IT’S official – Darren Day is the biggest love rat of all time.

‘I call it Place de la Concorde’

Well, it’s not quite official yet, but the name of the man responsible for more rings than a telephone at the Royal National Institute for the Deaf has been submitted to the Guinness World of Records for possible inclusion in next year’s tome.

His nomination, however, comes too late for the Independent’s list of the 50 best record-breakers (compiled in celebration of the Guinness Book of World Records’ 50th birthday).

The Indy does, however, record that the world’s biggest condom was a tear-inducing 21.94m long and was fitted over the obelisk at the Place de la Concorde in Paris in 1993.

We learn that German Rudi Horn (no relation to the obelisk at the Place de la Concorde – or indeed Darren Day) holds the record for the most teacups caught on the head while unicycling.

And we discover that if you want to take a shrew’s pulse, you’d better be able to count quickly.

The average shrew, says the Indy, has a heart rate of 1,200 beats per minute – and female shrews have been known to go as high as 2,000bpm when a certain love rat walks into the room.’
