The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority said pupils learn about Hitler in the first stage of secondary school, again if they choose history GCSE and a third time at A-level.

In fact, it is almost possible to go through school without learning about any other period of history.

Sean Lang, of the Historical Association, blames the exam boards.

Edexcel, for instance, offers a history A-level in which students can answer five of the required six questions on Germany between 1919 and 1935.

“If the boards insisted on greater breadth,” he said, “then the publishers would tear their hair out and the teachers would grumble, but they would get down to it in the end.”

And students could learn instead how in 1997 Britain was liberated from the clutches of the evil tyrant John Major by a wise man with a rictus grin called Tony Blair…’
