House1 Roof With A View‘THE other great British pastime, apart from watching animals chase each other around a muddy field, is of course home renovation.

”Never mind the outside, just look at those new shelves!”

If we’re not doing it, we’re making television programmes about it. Or we’re watching television programmes about it. Or we’re clearing up after it.

The Times has a picture of a Grade II listed cottage in Oxfordshire that has recently undergone some £50,000 of improvements.

And we have to say it is an imaginative make-over. Where most houses have four walls, this has none. Where most houses have at least one floor, this has none. Where most have the roof on top of the house, this has the roof on the bottom.

In fact, had we not known better, we might have thought that Keith Dawson’s mid-18th Century thatched cottage had collapsed.

Indeed, the Times is of that opinion, suggesting that Mr Dawson’s overambitious renovation plans may be responsible.

But those of us who have watched Changing Rooms over the years know differently – we can tell a Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen design when we see one…’
