Anorak | A New Beginning?

A New Beginning?

by | 1st, March 2005

‘MANY of you will no doubt have been saddened to read about the death of Old Mr Anorak at the weekend. And saddened more by the scurrilous rumours surrounding the great man’s demise at the tender age of 106.

We would like to set the record straight on that score by reminding readers that, as a keen table-tennis player from a young age, he often spent his winters coaching the Thai ladies’ ping-pong team.

And that was what he was doing at the weekend when a heart-attack so cruelly robbed all of us of his many – and manifold – talents.

Nor should anything untoward be read into the fact that he – and the entire Thai ladies’ ping-pong team – were naked at the time. Such bonding exercises are common practice in any rugby changing room.

With Old Mr Anorak’s end, however, not only has the world lost one of its great press barons (and table tennis coaches), but we have lost a friend, an inspiration and – much more importantly – the man who paid our wages.

Young Mrs Anorak VI has already served us all with redundancy notices and told us to be out of Anorak Towers, so that she can move in all her friends and family from back home in Latvia.

So, is the end, my friends, for Britain’s oldest online magazine? Or can we can find someone between now and then to fill the still warm shoes of our late benefactor?

We understand this will come as a great shock to you all, which is why we have set up a 24-hour helpline to aid you in coming to terms with the inevitable grief.

Ring anytime, and don’t worry about the lines being jammed and not being able to get through – it’s the very same helpline that was used to comfort distraught fans when Steps broke up…
