The Telegraph says that France’s National Library has airbrushed out Jean Paul Sartre’s trademark cigarette.

Smoking might well be “the symbolic equivalent of destructively appropriating the entire world”, as the thinker once wrote, but it is also bad for your health and in breach of France’s tough laws on tobacco advertising.

So, in an exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of Sartre’s birth, the Bibliotheque de France has put up a poster with the birthday boy’s Gauloise missing.

But until legislation decrees otherwise, he can still wear his glasses, which, as anti-glasses protestors maintain, places the wearer on a slippery slope to the very jaws of Hell…’
