‘IF there is no such thing as bad publicity, Dan Brown, author of the Da Vinci Code, is rubbing his hands with glee.

‘The butler did it’

There can surely be no greater way to increase sales for his book than to list it as “What the Vatican doesn’t want you to read”.

Hang the fact that the clerics at Roman Catholic HQ don’t want you to read it because it’s utter bunkum and makes a mockery of their beliefs, and just whisper about a conspiracy to silence he who dares to speak out.

But while the book stays on the bestseller lists, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Archbishop of Genoa and a former football commentator, has been detailed to rubbish it.

The Times says that the Vatican is “rattled” by the book, which centres on the notion that the Church has hidden the fact that Jesus not only married the former prostitute Mary Magdalene but fathered a child by her.

While we wonder what became of the baby Antonius Blairus and his descendents, the Church is keen to dismiss such stories.

“The book is everywhere,” says the Cardinal, who has even seen it for sale in Catholic bookshops. “There is a very real risk that many people who read it will believe that the fables it contains are true.”

Indeed, where would we be if we believed everything we read? We mean to say, turning water into wine… Pah! As if…’
