There can surely be no greater way to increase sales for his book than to list it as What the Vatican doesnt want you to read.
Hang the fact that the clerics at Roman Catholic HQ dont want you to read it because its utter bunkum and makes a mockery of their beliefs, and just whisper about a conspiracy to silence he who dares to speak out.
But while the book stays on the bestseller lists, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Archbishop of Genoa and a former football commentator, has been detailed to rubbish it.
The Times says that the Vatican is rattled by the book, which centres on the notion that the Church has hidden the fact that Jesus not only married the former prostitute Mary Magdalene but fathered a child by her.
While we wonder what became of the baby Antonius Blairus and his descendents, the Church is keen to dismiss such stories.
The book is everywhere, says the Cardinal, who has even seen it for sale in Catholic bookshops. There is a very real risk that many people who read it will believe that the fables it contains are true.
Indeed, where would we be if we believed everything we read? We mean to say, turning water into wine… Pah! As if…’
