‘DO you trust us? Or do you trust a man with a long, flowing beard, wearing a dog collar, who says he’d look ”very seriously” at an invitation to appear on the animated comedy TV show The Simpsons?

Of course, you might trust neither the journalists nor clerics. But the Times is preaching to the converted, and wants its readers to listen up.

In a lecture to media professionals, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, “hits out at web-based media nonsense”.

He calls the new web-based media a dark place of “paranoid fantasy, self-indulgent nonsense and dangerous bigotry”. It’s nothing like religion.

These elements are, of course, part of what makes the web so popular, especially if you can be paranoid, bigoted and nonsensical in the nude on a live webcam.

But there’s more, and Williams is also less than impressed with more traditional journalistic ways. He says there are “embarrassingly low levels of trust” in the profession, and sees a need for a “more realistic, less fevered” approach to stories.

The Archbishop wants realism? So here is the news. “Arsenal fan Jesus Christ walked on water yesterday. And he’ll do it again for a ticket to Live 8…”’
