What, Us Worry?

by | 12th, July 2005

‘WHEN you look at President Bush, what do you see?

‘You don’t have to be mad to work her, but it helps’

A strong man with a steely grimace? A weak man in a humped-back suit? Proof that it’s not what you know but who you know that gets you on in life? The inside of our palms as you bury your face in your hands and weep?

Well, if you’re Hillary Clinton, you see a comic book idiot. You see the buck-toothed, freckle-faced Alfred E Neuman of MAD magazine.

Of course, this observation has already been made by around a million websites, magazines and newspapers; but when Clinton makes it, it’s news.

As the Telegraph reports, while speaking at a conference in Aspen, Colorado, the now Senator Clinton, made her thoughts known. “Sometimes I feel that Alfred E Neuman is in charge in Washington,” said she.

Cue laughter. And the realisation that beneath the frumpy skirts and helmet hair-do beats the heart and glossy hair of Rachel from Friends, or some other hero of American comedy.

Having won the crowd over, Clinton then moved in for the kill. But with no catchphrase of her own – although “I’m not some Tammy Wynette standing by my man” is as good as our suggestion, “But she’s fat!” – Clinton borrowed one.

“What, me worry,” said Clinton, adopting the time-honoured phrase of the Neuman character.

Cue much more laughter. Mrs Clinton is now widely regarded as the front-runner for the Democrats’ presidential nomination in 2008.

Good for her.

But Clinton’s comments make us wonder that if Bush is Neuman, then what does that make his predecessor in the White House, her husband Bill? Shaggy? Dick Dastardly? Or what about Fat Freddy’s Cat? Send your suggestions to the usual address…’
