‘PLEASE excuse the lateness of this article, but there has been a computer “deferred success”.

Those who can do, those who can’t go for deferred success

This is in no way a failure on our part, it being, as we’ve already labelled it, a “deferred success”.

And that’s what retired primary school teacher Liz Beattie wants us to call any kind of failure from now on.

Mrs Beattie, who is Suffolk federation secretary of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) says in the Times that “we all need to succeed at something”.

Quite so. And the success, deferred or actual, of Mrs Beattie’s move to have the word “fail” removed from the education vocabulary will be decided by federation members at the union’s annual conference in Buxton, Derby.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t get the motion through,” continues Mrs Beattie, “because there are enough teachers at all levels who know that, with little ones, you’ve got to get them motivated and with older ones you’ve got to give them confidence going into exams.”

Which they will pass with flying colours, or, er, fail…’
