Engewels The Power Behind The Throne‘FROM the Queen mum’s solar-powered hats to the Countess of Wessex’s many well-earned breaks, the Royal Family has a long and noble tradition of energy conservation.

Enough bling to light up a small city

And now, as the Times says, the Queen is ready to go the extra kilowatt and run Windsor Castle, the world’s largest occupied castle, on hydroelectric power.

Planning permission has been granted to lower four turbines into Romney Weir on the river Thames.

“We’re constantly looking at ways of saving energy,” says a spokesman for the Queen. “We use energy efficient lightbulbs at Buckingham Palace and recycle 99 per cent of green waste.”

Impressive stuff. And while we applaud the Queen’s dedication to so-called green power, we note that the new turbines will only account for one third of the Castle’s energy consumption.

Which leads us to think of other ways to save power.

Charles could be tapped for wind power – flapping ears and hot air; Anne could produce raw horsepower for the royal fleet of cars; and Eddie could be used for compost…’
