Oil Be Back
‘SINCE Saddam Husseins removal from office, George Galloways moustache has become the most recognisable strip of facial hair in politics.
Theres Georges moustache in the Times, appearing alongside a story that its owner faces possible criminal charges after the US Senate investigation tracked £85,000 in Iraqi oil money to his wifes bank account in Jordan.
The Senate Permanent Sub-committee on Investigations has concluded that Galloway gave false and misleading testimony when he appeared before it in May.
Galloway was anything but straight with the Congress, says Senator Norm Coleman, the sub-committees chairman. He was anything but straight with the American people. There was a lot of bombast. There was a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.
Some of Galloways rhetoric is recalled on the Telegraphs front page. There the paper remembers Galloways bravura performance before the committee. You have nothing on me, Senator, except my name on a list of names from Iraq, said Galloway to Coleman.
He later added: What counts is not the names on the paper; what counts is wheres the money, Senator?
Well, some months on, the Senator thinks he knows the answer to Galloways question. He claims that Galloway was granted oil allocation from Iraq, under the multimillion-pound oil-for-food programme – intended to help the needy and used by Saddam to reward his friends and allies, the Telegraph says.
But Galloway claims hes innocent. An assistant to the MP, Ron McKay, tells the Guardian: ‘If such an allegation has been made, George denies it absolutely and is ready to fly to the US tomorrow if Coleman brings these charges and it will all be sorted in court.
As will his moustache…’
