‘YOU pay peanuts you get monkeys. So the saying goes. What you pay for is what you get.

So what does £200,000 a year buy you? As the Telegraph reports, for that sum you can hire Keela, a 16-month-old springer spaniel.

Keela spends her days hunting down villains for South Yorkshire Police.

So keen is Keela’s sense of smell that she can sniff blood on clothes even after they have been washed repeatedly in biological powder. What’s more, she can detect blood on weapons that have been cleaned.

As her handler john Ellis explains: “It’s not like looking for a needle in a haystack any more. We have two other dogs that will find the haystack; Keela will find the needle.”

So good is Keela at her job that he can be hired out at £530 a day, plus expenses. Sadly, for villains who want to remove Keela from the crime scene, she is only available to other police forces.

This makes her expensive (ten times more so than her fellow dogs) and in line to earn more than the chief constable, Meredydd Hughes, who rakes in £129,963 – which is nothing to be sniffed at…’
