‘YOU might be hard-pressed to link Liam Gallagher, Paula Radcliffe and Professor Stephen Hawking, yet, to 34-year-old North Londoner Jules Segal, these three individuals – together with another 497 famous British celebrities – hold the key to winning a bizzare bet and raising money for charity.

What started as an argument between Jules and a friend, has developed into a bid to have his photograph taken shaking hands with as many of the 500 as possible.

The mission was conceived when Jules’ friend Michael Kritharis suggested that most famous people wouldn’t give up even a few seconds to a member of the public unless they benefited by doing so.

A wager was agreed and now Jules has a target of meeting at least 100 out of the 500 names that Michael drew up, within 6 months.

‘Greetingthe500’, as the concept is now officially known, has several rules, including no waiting around stage doors; the celeb must agree in advance to any meeting; and no-one can be contacted more than once.

On his website – www.greetingthe500.typepad.com – which includes the full list of 500, Jules has attracted something of a cult following, with around 3,000 people checking his progress daily .

About 40 meetings have so far taken place, with the likes of Cherie Blair, David Gower, Sir Tim Rice and Chris Tarrant, already safely greeted.

So if you should happen to bump into the likes of Ben Elton, Claire Rayner, David Baddiel, Matt Lucas or Vanessa Feltz at the supermarket, why not give them a nudge in the enterprising Jules’s direction.’
