Touch-Tight & Fancy Free

THE great former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson may or may not have given Matthew Cole a few free tips on speech-making, but by his own admission Ashley has Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to thank for getting him to this point in the first place.

It was, the Gunners’ left-back revealed in his speech (given against tradition AFTER the best man’s), a piece of training ground advice from the short-sighted Frenchman that enabled Ashley to win his sweetheart’s heart.

“She bombed me out at the first chance when I asked for her number,” Ashley revealed to the assembled crowd of footballers, celebrities and childhood friends the happy couple haven’t managed yet to shake off.

“But as Arsene Wenger always says to me, “Stay touch-tight and you’ll get your man – or your beautiful girl”. And now I’m here celebrating a great day in my life.”

Unconventional Wenger’s methods may be, but they definitely work – both on and off the football pitch.

Would David Seaman, for instance, have married his lovely Debbie had not he called to mind on their first meeting the words of the great coach: “Don’t let the ball go over your bloody head again.”?

And had Seaman not got married, Bob Wilson would never have risen cat-like to his feet to deliver his memorable oration all those years ago…
