Hair Trigger

NOT only are the alleged plotters Muslim, they are British and middle-class too.

So says the Telegraph’s front-page headline as the paper struggles to come to terms not only with the fact that the word middle-class no longer means white, but that neither is it any longer the embodiment of the ethics of the local golf club.

In fact, the thought must have crossed the paper’s mind that the fuel for this attempted atrocity may not have been provided by Palestine or Iraq or Lebanon.

Nor even by feelings of alienation in a multi-faith and multi-cultural Britain that did not share their values.

In fact, this terrible sense of anger and grievance could just be the result of the poor umpiring decisions that cost Pakistan so badly in the recent Third Test.

If so, Daryl Hair and Billy Doctrove have a lot to answer for…
