“IS Britney the next Nicole?”
No sooner has Anna Nicole Smith shuffled away from the VIP area than the Enquirer is looking for her replacement. And it is looking at Britney Spears.
Anna, who now carries the epithet “tragic”, is pictured on the magazine’s front page. Alongside her sits an hirsute Spears. She is smoking a cigarette. In the language of Hollywood only the bad and the troubled smoke.
To many a cigarette is a restorative, a sublime time out from the pace of life, offering a moment of private reflection. But “Britney Spears is spiralling wildly out of control,” says the magazine. See that cigarette. She “could end up on a coroner’s slab like tragic Anna Nicole Smith”.
How can we stop her? Felicia Culotta, Britney’s former assistant who now works as a trolley dolly, writes to the singer’s website: “I…am crushed/ saddened/ heart sick by the way her life is unfolding. There’s just so much you can do to help a person – I don’t dare want to be an enabler. And I cannot love her enough for her both of us. I cannot convince her in ANY way to lover herself.”
Britney watchers who saw her video for Touch Of My Hand will realise that Britney does love herself.

Others will wonder what Culotta means by “enabler”. Is a flight term, a code word for high flying Britney’s imminent crash landing?
“Britney has been reading the stories about Anna Nicole’s death,” says a “close family friend”. “But I don’t think she imagines for one minute something like that could happen to her.”
Would it be right for Britney, a 25-year-old, to be preoccupied by death?
And in any case, how can Britney be the new Anna Nicole, that blonde bombshell, when she doesn’t have any hair?
