I THOUGHT you’d like to know that today is the day that Random House publishes my book, Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion.
You’ll find it here. If you click on the Amazon link, you can buy it for less than $12.
If you’re even thinking of doing so, please try to do it today. An impressive showing will inspire the publisher, further the noble cause of rhetoric, and show my wife that countless hours spent writing a figures blog haven’t been wasted.
Would you do that for Figaro? Plus buy 50 more copies for your friends and relatives and students and book group and H.R. director and Member of Congress? All right, then, do it for yourself:
Taking your love of words, you’ll tap into their persuasive power and mold people’s minds to your will, to paraphrase John Quincy Adams. (He really could be scary at times.)
You’ll learn how Aristotle and Cicero can make you more eloquent.
Plus you’ll find an assortment of popular-culture dodges, including the Eddie Haskell Ploy, Enimen’s Rules of Decorum, the Belushi Paradigm, Stalin’s Timing Secret, and the Yoda Technique.
If you’re a teacher, I’d be glad to conduct a speakerphone conference with your class.
Thank You for Arguing comes with Figaro’s personal guarantee. If you’re not wholly satisfied, I will write you a highly figured letter of apology.
With heartfelt thanks,
Figaro

So there’s an art to persuasion now? Oh. Does this mean I’m going to have to refine the “unless-you-see-it-my-way-there’ll-be-no-sex” tactic? Not much subtlety to it but it was rarely known to fail.
Holding off on the hugs, kisses and fondles until I get the required response,

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby… well that’s how I view book publication and woe betide anyone who criticises said baby. Your excitement must be at fever pitch right now?
I shall buy your book because it looks like an interesting read and I’ll give it a plug on my blog…….
Just remember me when my next baby is due!
