A Gay American Idol - Melinda Dolittle More Talent Than Antonella
AMERICAN Idol continues its long trawl for talent. Antonella Barba had talent, but of the wrong sort for this show.
Sanjaya Malakar has talent and should his nascent career as America’s leading whisperer fail to prosper he can combine his act with his Phil Spector impersonation to become a truly unique performer.
But there is singing talent on the show. And it’s name is Melinda Doolittle.
As Tabloid Baby notes, Melinda may not have much by way of neck, but again she showed tonight that she’s head and shoulders above the other finalists on American Idol.
Melinda, of course, is a professional. She makes a living as a background singer. She comes with a vocal coach and stylist. At 29, she’s the oldest contestant, and despite her shy onstage demeanor, she obviously knows who she is. But how soon until America gets the hint?
In the latest episode dedicated to the rock ‘n’ rolling British Invasion of the Sixties, Melinda chose “As Long As He Needs Me” fro the musical Oliver. But in the opening line, sitting on the lip of the stage, she quite clearly enunciated, “As long as she needs me,” before switching back to “he” for the rest of the song.
Will America have its first openly-gay Idol here? A few weeks back, Melinda sang the gay anthem, “My Funny Valentine” and dedicated it her two “closest” female friends, whom she called her “Gayles” - as in “gay girls” - or as she explained, “Gayle King,” the woman long rumoured to be Oprah Winfrey’s lover (Melinda said she’s the Oprah in the triangle). And two weeks ago, she made her mark with a strutting “I’m A Woman.”
Tonight, she laid it all out. And was that a (Oprah’s longtime alleged boyfriend) Stedman Graham joke when she held onto the line: “I’ll cling on… sted-fast-ly…”?
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
But whether Melinda the professional is merely reaching for a voting demographic, has an Oprah jones, or playing it loud and proud… we’d say it doesn’t matter! It’s about time we had a gay Idol!
The real issue is whether Melinda, as a professional, should be in the contest to begin with. Because every time she sings, she’s so much better than the others…
But how about that Sanjaya? He deserves to stay another week! Whisper it…
According to American Idol, the 1960s British Invasion was epitomised by these tunes:
Haley Scarnato - “Tell Him” by The Exciters.
Chris Richardson - “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying” by Gerry and the Pacemakers.
Stephanie Edwards - “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” by Dusty Springfield.
Blake Lewis - “Time Of The Season” by the Zombies. He beatboxes at the start. (probably kinda like the record).
Lakisha Jones - “Diamonds are Forever,” Shirley Bassey (from the Bond movie).
Phil Stacey - “Tobacco Road” by The Nashville Teens.
Jordin Sparks - “I Who Have Nothing” by Tom Jones.
Sanjaya Malakar - “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks. (EEP!)
Gina Glocksen - “Paint it Black” by the Rolling Stones.
Chris Sligh - “She’s Not There” by the Zombies
Melinda Doolittle - “As Long as He Needs Me” from the musical “Oliver!”

The bible be damned - so to speak. The Old Testament is against homosexuality but Christians aren’t bound by the old testament we’re bound by the covenant Jesus created for us with God by dying for our sins. Jesus said nothing on the subject. St. Paul bitched about it, but then he didn’t approve of marriage and we haven’t stopped getting married.

Jesus is love, yes, but God hates sin, though he loves the sinner. And ignorance about the bible on homosexuality would be to say that it is ok. It is not ok, it is a preversion of the intimate relationship between a man and woman. Even the mentality is wrong. its not okay to be gay, its an unfortunate bondage, and if we profess to be christians or children of God, we should love even gays, but we should not agree with homosexuality because its a perversion of what God made beautiful. So while we live with gays, have friends and relatives who are gay, we do not dispise or hate them, we simply need to love them, and share with them the reality of God’s love, so they know he can deliver them from anything, not only gayism. And am glad someone who knows Melinda has spoken out that she is not gay. Guys, if you want to write such things in press, at least do us a favour and get a one on one interview with her, then publish it. Speculation and all does not do us all so much good. Thank you for the space to speak out…

The name of the show is American Idol. The purpose of the show is to seek out a talented singer and give them a shot at stardom. I have been watching this show from season 1 and have never read or seen anything that says that the contestants are judged on sexual preference. From what I have seen over the TV Melinda has always represented herself in a respectful manner with a talent for singing. I myself can’t carry a tune in a bucket and commend her for showing off her god given talent. Others have to learn to stop sterotyping someone just because they have talent. Unless Melinda were to hit on you I see no reason for the discriminating media writings about her. Whether she is gay or not the girl can sing and that is the reason why she was on the show. Jealousy is a terrible thing and is the reason why the world is in such a state today. I admire this girls vocal powers and would like to see her prosper, she is very dedicated to her singing career and it shows everytime she opens her mouth to sing.
God Bless you Melinda and keep continuing to do the lords work.

some of you people are so ignorant…..some one can be gay, practicing or not and still believe in and love god….and can you not remember “jesus is love”???seriously do you READ the bible, maybe you just have it preached at you….but the first thing jesus talks about in the new testament is “thou shalt not judge”…..so don’t, or perhaps you’ll have to talk about that when you face him???, seriously…read maybe the first couple of chapters of matthew!!!
i love melinda for her God given talent and what a wonderful inspiration that she is. no more, no less, no judgement. heathens!

I think that Melinda Doolittle should have won the all American Idol. I do not think that Melinda is Gay!
May 24th, 2007 at 8:01 pm
I think is very stupid to say that Melinda is gay…! She has from the beginning presented herself as a woman that loves God and she has a Christian background. Stop throwing this kind of trash on her.

Um, Roger? There is such a thing as a gay christian. I don’t know if she’s gay or not (although I admit she does kind of give off that vibe), and we’ll probably never know. Sexuality shouldn’t matter when it comes to music, but there is such a bigoted stance against it in this country, that I wish more gay entertainers would come out, just to start breaking down those stereotypes. Especially gay christians. Do you here me Clay Akin? I’m talking to you!:)

When I did a search for Melinda Doolittle. I was shocked to see what was written and I could not pass up the opportunity to voice my opinion. Melinda is not gay. On the song you have reference to “As Long as he needs me”…she sang it “As long ashe needs me.” She sang both words without taking a breath, so when you do that your words slur together. I know I am a singer. Melinda is a good Christian woman, with both men and women friends. She has very high morals. I have friends who have known her all of her life and there is not one ounce of gay in her. We love her and we know that God will take her very, very far in the music industry. She is 100% sold out to God and she is in no way, form or fashion gay.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:44 am
how do you make gay faces? It would be sad to know she is gay! Why? because she would be robbing herself of perfect complete love that will never be found in any gay relationship!
April 19th, 2007 at 10:33 am
I don’t know if Melinda is gay or not cause one time she sang her hit song “My Funny Valentine”, then she sang the song “As Long As He Needs Me” from the musical Oliver! During her interview with Lulu, she said “Whenever my guy needs me, I’ll be there” so it’s hard to tell if she’s gay or not. She might be cause I know for a fact that she can make gay faces, but then on the other hand, why would she sing a song about her boyfriend (if she has one)? Maybe she sings songs to cover up her fondness for females and she’s playing lour and proud! Overall, even if she’s gay or not, I could care less…as long as she can sing! Yeah, you rock girl! LOVE YOU FOREVER MELINDA!!!

EDWARD I AGREE WITH YOU. A GREAT VOICE IS JUST THAT A GREAT VOICE. SHE HAS BEEN BLESSED AND WORKED HARD TO HONE HER TALENT. I WOULD BUY ANY SONG THAT HAS HER TALENT ATTACHED TO IT. ANYTHING BEYOND HER VOICE AS FAR AS HER LIFE IS CONCERED IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. OH BY THE WAY THE DEFINITION OF A PROFESSIONAL-TAKING MONEY FOR PERFORMING IN YOUR CHOSEN PROFESSION. MANY AMERICAN IDOL CONTESTANTS HAVE BEEN THAT VERY THING. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! CHECK YOUR FACTS AND LEAVE MELINDA ALONE.

I do not care one iota about Melinda’s sexuality. It is a total non-event. The 2002 winner of British Pop Idol, Will Young, is gay, but I really like his artistry, and do not concern myself with the rest.
I have only 2 problems related to male or female homosexuality: Hypocrisy, whether from a heterosexual person discriminating against homosexuals, or someone of one sexuality in private claiming the other sexuality in public; Militantism, when people of either sexuality cannot turn off their campaigning for or against either sexuality, whatever the initial subject of a programme or a discussion.
Melinda is clearly extremely unlikely to be a hypocrite or a tiresome campaigner on any subject, so however she lives her life is none of my business.
Melinda could be an alien or a deep-sea monster, for all I care; she would still be one of the finest singers I have ever heard. I want to pre-order her first CD; anyone know how to do that?
(I am a 58 yr old father of four, naivety and hero-worship abandoned me long ago.)

If Melinda is gay, it is sending the message that it doesn’t matter who we love, that we are still a person and that you can still be whatever you want to be. That is what America is all about. One of these days, America will wake up and realize that it is not who you love, but how you love that matters. If you only care about people that are heterosexual then you are sending the message that others who are not are less than everyone else and they aren’t. Clay Aiken is supposedly gay and who cares. There are more out there than that. K.D. Lang, Melissa Etheridge and Elton John are some of the greatest singers of our time and each one of them is gay. Do you not listen to their music? If you turn on someone because they are gay, you are wrong for that. Everyone needs someone and who cares who it is…

I think Sanjaya should’ve been off a long time ago.Now he’s being made a fool of.Melinda should be off because she’s a professional. They should’ve kept the last 4 or 5 people. It’s not fair this year! I hope the website for the worst american idol doesn’t ruin it for the following years if they keep the show on.That website should be taken off with the help of lawyers! Thank you for letting me voice my opinion.I use to love to watch the show. Also if Melinda is gay what message is that sending?
