Yes, the show’s songs are chosen a week before the air - and chosen for and not by the singers. But can’t they be changed, moved to reflect the times? As Randy Lewis says: “So yes, they would have had to depart from the script. But sometimes life departs from the script.”

One would expect Anorak would know now how the show works. The songs have to be chosen, the rights cleared, arrangements have to be written, and then they have to be rehearsed. These are amateurs. We are not watching the Dean Martin Show or a Justin Timberlake special. The contestants can’t just pick any song at the last moment. The finale of this column is enough to get Anorak kicked off American Columnist for stupidity.
