Corporal Donald Payne: Britain’s First Convicted War Criminal

by | 30th, April 2007

DONALD Payne has the honour of being Britain’s first convicted war criminal. He sentenced on Monday to one year in jail for mistreating Iraqi prisoners. The case saw senior commanders face allegations they had authorized abuse.

As Reuters reports, Corporal Donald Payne, who has been sacked from the Army, is the only British soldier punished in the case of Baha Musa, an Iraqi hotel receptionist who died after suffering 93 separate injuries from beatings while in British custody in 2003.

This by John Blake in the Anorak Forums:

“To read that a British soldier Corpral Donald Payne has recieved a ONE year prison sentence after being found guilty of violent physical abuse of Iraqi hotel receptionist Baha Musa is scandlous. Musa died while in British custody from NINETY-THREE different injuries is yet another example that real justice is a joke.

“Several other soldiers involved in these accusations during an eight month trial were found not guilty as they believe that it was authorised by their commanding officer.

“This case stinks of cover-ups,denials and real accountabilty.Massive physically abuse and torture,an eight month trial, and then a pathetic one year in jail for a sadistic bastard who is now a war crinminal.

“When Iraqi’s see the crimes aginst them by the American and British militaries(crimes of beatings, sexual abuse and murder of innocent people) they will long remember the ‘moral democracy’ that came to their country.”
