Madeleine McCann: Blown Out Of All Proportion
MADELEINE McCann is on the beach at Praia da Luz. Or at least her likeness is.
As the Mail reports, Chris Lennox and Les Harley, have driven 2,200 miles from Scotland. They have brought along a 800 sq ft giant inflatable billboard appealing for Madeleine’s safe return.
The Mail doesn’t say anything about Chris Lennox and Les Harle nor why they should choose to display Madeleine’s image in such a fashion. Is this not a little unusual, creepy even?
At least the BBC bothers to speak with campaigners. It hears Mr Lennox tell us: “My heartstrings have been pulled on this and I want to help. I have a family with small kids and my wife has been following this from day one. She told me to come out here and do what I could. I am clearly here to help raise awareness.”
Such is the way of public spectacles, like the Madeleine McCann mystery, that many feel involved. They want to do their bit. But what can they do? Put themselves in the public eye? Make a huge inflatable and show the world how much they care?
Lennox and Hale plan to tour the area with their massive inflatable sign. And surely it will keep Madeleine’s name in the public eye. People will be reminded that Madeleine McCann has gone missing. Parents on holiday will be made aware that children can be taken. They will anxiously hug their children closer. And, if they’ve read some of the over the top media coverage, they will worry over holidaying in Portugal.
Meanwhile, back in the UK, Sun readers can go online and watch a video of Madeleine. It’s called “Maddie on Mobile”. The Mail has stills of Madeleine McCann at the airport, excitedly climbing the airplane’s steps.
The two films, one of 13 seconds and another of nine, were taken on camera phones. “Somewhere in the background there’s even the sound of her voice,” says the Mail. Ghouls will love it.
And they can see it on the Sun’s website. Right after an advert for a film called Paradise Lost, featuring lot of babes in bikinis, and before “Sex in the City, a video showing a couple shagging on a London rooftop, there’s Madeleine on the airport shuttle bus.
So we look. But what does it teach us? Only that the media owns the story of Madeleine McCann. And that she is just another form of entertainment to pass the time before the next show…

Well as I’m sure I already said somewhere, my problem aint with the campaign or the wishes of everyone that maddie is found safe and well. erm yeh like I wouldn’t want that to happen. It’s with the way the whole thing has been commercialised and the objects of the fund including financial assistance for the family.

Can we put an age limit on this site? I am sick of reading pathetic drivel clearly written by bored school children on half term holidays. I suggest they spend their time learning how to read, write and spell correctly - remember kids, writing in big letters is just like shouting and gets you nowhere and no one thinks that writing in text language is either big or clever

I have no problem with the campaign raising awareness for Maddie and other children like her. I have a big problem with the fund “providing support, including financial assistance, to Madeleine’s family”. wtf is all that about..??!!??!!

I hope the campaign to bring Madeleine home is successful! Sadly, many children are missing. Families of other missing children can learn new ways to create awareness of their child from this campaign. People could help families find children by offering to send circulations on the internet, hanging pictures in businesses, putting a giant poster in an area with a lot of traffic, donating reward money, etc. The media coverage regarding Madeleine is a child abduction wake up call. Inadvertently, other missing children might be located as a result of the media attention and police work. Hopefully people will discover new ways to deal with cases involving other missing children.

Having read some really laughable ‘theories” on these boards about the whereabouts of Madeleine and who is responsible for taking her, I’ve been pondering on these people who have dedicated hours and hours posting obsessively about their irritation with the publicity the McCanns are receiving. Some of the constant anti–McCann posters have fallen away over the past few days it’s true. Now what I’m wondering is whether that’s because the sensitive little loves packed it in when everyone got cross with them at once or if in fact it is just because they are currently very very busy. I mean who is likely to be really bothered about a lost little girl and her distraught family hogging the limelight if not the publicity team from Endemol working overtime to make sure nothing gets in the way of their headlines. And in a more longterm project conducting a concerted assault on common decency so that we can all gradually be primed to accept a competition to win a kidney from a dying woman as jolly good fun. There’s no doubt since the CBB debacle that message boards are now territory to be monitored and if possible dominated in the quest for control of the public’s attention span. Step One, chase off the competition in the shape of a tragic terrified three year old. Something about all this makes me shudder…..One Ring to Endemol and in the Darkness Bind them ….that sort of shudder, the Big Eye logo, it all adds up ……
And as for this twat here today Anormouse. (Enormous Anus - geddit! Hilarious) the Endemol team must be busy in the pre-show run up, they’ve sent the office boy. Mind you, I’d be equally open to take seriously one or two other posters theories on him.
