For The Love Of God: Damien Hirst’s Skull
THE world-renowned Brit Art superstar Damien Hirst has unveiled his latest and most expensive creation to date - a jewel-encrusted skull. Yours for a paltry £50million.
The 41-year-old, apparently, sourced over 8,000 flawless diamonds which he then, erm, stuck (possibly with superglue or maybe Pritt) all over an 18th century skull to create the work which will be the highlight of his new show ‘Beyond Belief’.
Not short of a bob or two himself, after selling lots and lots of pretentious tat, I mean important and challenging pieces, to very rich people, Hirst spilt the £12million cost of the raw materials with dealer Jay Jopling.
The skull, which is the biggest jewellery commission in Britain in a century, will be on show at the White Cube gallery in Mayfair.
It is entitled “For The Love Of God”.
I couldn’t have put it better myself. (Anyone else think Hirst’s laughing into his sleeve?)

Dear Editor,
After reading the Saturday edition of The Independent (2nd June 2007), I have been left doubting your writer Thomas Sutcliffe’s devotion to the subject of distributing cultural awareness.
I was delighted to see a front page committed to the new work by Damien Hirst, but on close inspection the text was mainly a reiteration of what we already know about the public’s initial shocked reactions to his previous works.
There was a good deal of factual content; where to find the display, what materials it was made from, the title and it’s meaning, and the implication of the motive behind ‘For the Love of God’, but there was no mention of what Sutcliffe actually thought of it himself which would have made much stronger more dynamic reading.
When I moved on to reading the supplement, I found it even more incredible that there was a four-page spread devoted to an m.o.r. comedienne, much of whose greatness seemed to be attributed to the eye make up she had applied on the day of the interview which I found even more offensive in a society trying to move away from w.a.g. influenced vanity and self-greatness.
I would suggest that your writers are encouraged to stop blowing smoke up the arses of television celebrity culture and at least make some attempt to stop this dumbing down of high art by offering some honest, concrete and intelligent views. I feel sure that with all the access we now have to art, you could open the front page to public contributions which would offer more committed views and cultural acumen than the ‘safe’ wording you are currently offering.
Yours faithfully

Not often you rget an artist who knows how to make money - not a decent artist, at any rate

Fascinating piece. Extremely perverse.
But “For the Love of God” is misleading.
It should read “For the Love of Money”.

its gross, have you seen those crystal skulls? they are hideous too.
He could have sent me the diamonds, but he didn’t so I shall grizzle lots.
No its not art, its expensive tat.
Those diamonds just trickling through my fingers, well now that could be art! or even Art
