The Fish Tank: MPs Treat Themselves On Taxpayers’ Behalf

by | 4th, June 2007

fish-tank.jpgAS MPs continue the battle to keep details of their expenses secret, the Sun reveals what most of us know already – our beloved members of Parliament are prone to a splurge or two, at our expense.

This latest list of items claimed by MPs as expenses reads like a Generation Game conveyor belt (albeit updated), with everything from iPods to Plasma screens and even a fish tank, according to “insiders”.

A finance department source harrumphs: “In the run- up to Christmas a lot of MPs started claiming for iPods. It is outrageous.”

These new claims will no doubt strengthen the case for more transparency in Parliament and come after Tory MP David Maclean’s much publicised recent purchase of a quad bike which he put on expenses.

Currently, an MP can spend up to £21,634 on maintaining a second home or their constituency while another £20,000 is available for the running of their office.

But just how did that un-named MP justify expensing a fish tank? Miscellaneous household, er, gills?
