Emily Parr Is Evicted From Big Brother For Calling Charley A ‘Nigger’
EMILY Parr was removed from the Big Brother house in the early hours of this morning (7th June) after using a racially offensive word to a fellow housemate.
Emily was dancing with Charley and Nicky in the living room of the Big Brother house at approximately 8.30pm last night (Wednesday 6th June) when she was heard to say “Are you pushing it out you nigger?” to Charley.
Emily immediately made clear that she had not intended to offend and that the comment had been meant as a joke. In discussing what she had said, Charley and Nicky agreed that they were not personally offended, although both did express shock at the language she had used. In the ensuing discussion, Emily acknowledged that she should have been more careful with her words.
The comment was not screened as part of the ‘as live’ streaming on E4 and was immediately reported up to senior production staff at Brighter Pictures, the Endemol UK subsidiary that produces the show. In consultation with senior executives at Channel 4 the decision was taken to remove Emily from the house on the grounds that she had broken the rules governing contestant behaviour.
The House Rules given to all contestants clearly state:
• Big Brother will intervene and take appropriate action if Housemates behave in a way that Big Brother considers is unacceptable.
• Unacceptable behaviour includes: behaving in a way that could cause serious offence to either their fellow Housemates or members of the viewing public including serious offence based on the grounds of race.
• Housemates who act in a way that is seriously unacceptable will be evicted.
Emily was called to the Diary Room at approximately 03.30 am to be informed of the decision and was removed from the house immediately without further contact with other contestants. The remaining housemates were informed of Big Brother’s decision at approximately 9.30am.
Emily was one of two housemates nominated for eviction this week and as a result the latest eviction vote has been suspended.
The Judge And Jury
Angela Jain, who heads the Big Brother commissioning team at Channel 4, said:
“I think people watching the show tonight will agree that Emily spoke carelessly rather than maliciously – certainly Charley and Nicky, the two housemates most directly involved in the conversation with her, seem to accept that she did. She understands why her involvement in Big Brother has had to come an end and she very much regrets what she said.
“In the wake of Celebrity Big Brother we must consider the potential offence to viewers regardless of Emily’s intentions and her housemates’ response. The word nigger is clearly racially offensive and there was no justification for its use. We have removed Emily from the house to once again make it clear to all housemates and the viewers at home that such behaviour won’t be tolerated.”
The Conversation:
Emily: (referring to Charley dancing/pushing her hips forward) You pushing it out you nigger.
Nicky: (shocked laughter) Em, I can’t believe you said that.
Charley: You are in trouble.
Emily: Don’t make a big thing out of it then. I was joking.
Charley: I know you were… but that’s some serious shit, sorry.
Emily: Why?
Charley: Oh my god. I’m not even saying it.
Nicky: Just don’t talk about it anymore.
Emily: I was joking
Charley: Do you know how many viewers would watch that?
Nicky: Okay, don’t make a big deal out of it.
Charley: Fancy you saying that. I can’t believe you said that.
Emily: Somebody has already used that word in this house.
Charley: No way. (Pause) Yeah, me. I’m a nigger.
Nicky laughs.
Charley: I am one. Fancy you saying it. I know maybe you see it in a rap song. Maybe you and your friends sit there saying it.
Emily: I’m friendly with plenty of black people.
Nicky: And you call them niggers?
Emily: Yeah and they call me niggers. They call me wiggers as well.
Nicky: I’m quite shocked.
Charley: I’m fucking in shock.
Emily: It’s not a big deal though is it?
Charley: Not for us it ain’t. Fuck me.

About the word nigger.
Ya know - it is a reality show.
It is a word. It was at one day in time - what they were called.
No big deal.
For example.
My white - god fearing church going mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers.
One day I was pushing her wheel chair through a large department store and in her FINAL stages of Alzheimer’s at 75 years old in 2003 - she saw a black woman with her black child and as sincere as she could feel and express her compliment she said:
“Oh look at that cute little nigger baby”.
The lady did an exorcist head spin and stared at my mother and I.
I simply said “my mother has Alzheimer’s and she thinks you have a cute baby”. The lady frowned ( if looks could kill!) walked away and later came up to my mom and shared her beautiful child with my Mom. My mom smiled.
Maybe the woman thought about the date in time - my Moms age - and like the innoscence of a child - so was the honesty of an elder person without all of her faculties.
We are all on this “treadmill” to walk, talk, judge, condemn, refer to, any and all of who we might be otherwise.
IF NOT tied to the treadmill of what OTHERS WANT US TO BELIEVE who WOULD we be?

In this day and age the use of such words as nigger should not deemed offensive, nigger in my understanding an old word used for slaves, how many 200 year old slaves are still kicking about?…..
without the slave trade negroes would still be stuck in the shithole which is Africa.
i for one am proud of my ancestry and the diversity the slave trade has brought to the black cultural table, the poor bastards in zimbabwe, somalia etc would jump at the chance for a way out, they cram themselves into boats to escape everyday, Africa is an uneducated backwards thinking country where pain and tyranny are commonplace, it’s overcrowded and has many problems , imagine the state of Africa today if no blacks had ever been taken from their homeland and placed throughout the globe

This PC stuff is just getting stupid now. I’m black, and feel sorry for Emily for being evicted in such cicumstances. Nigger is just a word. Words have meanings, but these differ in different contexts. If I were called an idiot for doing something silly, would that be so terrible…No. If I were called an idiot for accidentally doing something wrong if I were retarded, would that be out of order…Yes.
Sometimes we just need to forget all this PC crap and use our common sense. Sadly though, this seems to be in short supply.

I disagree Paul. Profanity is allowed in the house, no action would be taken for calling another housemate a cunt. However, once you add a racial element to it e.g. honky cunt, stupid cracker, fucking nigger, it then becomes more of a racial slur. I think what made it worse was that they hardly knew each other. It would have been a different story if they had been long time friends. Its also unfair to say “Black people should just stop calling each other that” or “If they can use it why can’t we” not all blacks use the word and the ones that do are either uneducated and or hip-hop artists. Not really the smartest bunch or role models we should be emulating.
And Rickie, if I was in that situation and had a personality like Charley’s, I would use the situation to my advantage as well. Its a game show, £100000 at stake, one less contestant means a greater chance for her. Plus she also comes out looking like a victim, though from the posts on this site that seems to have backfired for her.

Jon has a rather mixed understanding. Action may have been taken if Charley had called Emily a “white cunt”, but I assure you not because Charley had commented on the colour of Emily’s skin, instead for the use of profanity. Incidentally, words such as “cunt” are without race, albeit anglo-saxon in origin, so cause equal offence to black and white when used as a derogative.
Learning to see something, as Jon suggests, from an EDUCATED person’s perspective, implies there is a CORRECT viewpoint and an INCORRECT one. Is he the one to decide this for us? Not for me, thanks.

It’s not just a word, and it baffles me that some of you can sit there and say it is . If your ancestry were enslaved and degraded on the basis of their race. Then I’m sure you’d take much offence to someone insulting your ancestry. Until you learn to see it from an EDUCATED person’s perspective, I advice you to stop saying it’s acceptable.
It has nothing to do with freedom of speech, because I’m sure equal action would’ve been taken if Charley called Emily a “white cunt”.

I am half-cast, (although i think the PC phrase is now dual heritiage), I have friends who call me a half-bake, I have friends who really make fun because my ethnicity is Asian and I cant stand the smell of any curry, let alone eat it, does this make them racist? No it makes them people who dont sit of the fence of political correctness. I have been victimised because of the colour of my skin. There is a huge difference between being racist towards someone and having a laugh with someone. I find it truely offensive that Charley tried to use the “race card” for her own gain.
I felt very angered towards Charley when the incident of Emily using the work Nigger caused Emily to be removed from the big brother house. Charley used the situation for her own gain, she was not offended by the comment, but made such an issue out of it after the event. Emily was called out of bed in the middle of the night, if Nicky and Charley were not still discussing it hours later, and kept going on about it, i feel that Emily would not have been removed from the house.
Charley also used the work Nigger, Charley has also had rants at Channelle calling her “white trash and Chalky” is calling a white person Chalky not racist? Why has Charley not been removed from the house? Is this not a double standard??????
Charley commented the next day that she would be all over the papers.
Charley very proudly states, she doesnt work, yet states she is always out partying. As for what I have seen on Charley, she appears to be very rude and ignorant towards other people feelings, she just shouts over people all the time and full of her own self importance.

i have read a book at school and that consists of the word nigger three times a quote to show this is ‘ill get u strung up u nigger’ yes u are correct the book is of mice and men a me and the rest of my class studied this novel as a part of our gcses so if its in a childrens novel them there is nothing wrong with calling charlie a nigger. aslo i heard that there was no complaints by the public but on the other hand there were compliants about big brother booting emily out. i think emily was very nice and the most genuin person in there. who will win (i think its going to be either carol or tracey) EMILY ROCKS GET HER BCK IN BIG BROTHER HOUSE all my love sindy rogers in shirebrook

This is the biggest load of bollacks I’ve ever heard. If its wrong to call a black person a nigger, then its equally wrong for a black person to call a white person a honkey. Both words are used to infer a person is inferior to the person using the term, therefore it must be equally offensive.
The word cannot be derogatory if it its perfectly acceptable for a black person to call another black person it, but it is deemed to be racial discrimination for a white person to say the same thing.
Why?
Furthermore it is racial discrimination to allow black people to do something that white people can’t.
When looking at the word itself, it originally denoted the nationality of a Nigerian person, so why do black people call non Nigerian people niggers?
Are we to have two English languages one for whites and one for blacks?
Why does anyone, either black or white, have to make reference to a persons colour in this day and age? It is not necessary.
Why do the MOBOs exist, if there was a white only award it would be racist?

i think you’ll all agree with me when i say that the racist thing is charley reacting to the word nigger, not the use of the word itself. when people can say the word nigger and nobody is offended is the day racism no longer exists.
what charley’s state of thinking is that the word nigger is connotated with people with dark skin, so she reacted to it. THAT is racist, not throwing a word around that nobody should be offended by anymore. the slave trade has long been abolished so i do not understand why dark skinned people are still offended by a word that was yes, once used to describe them. nobody cares anymore. i call all of my friends, varying in skin tone from light to dark, the word “nigger” at times, just because it’s funny. i personally don’t find it funny how african people were treated in the slave trade, but that era is long gone and now everybody just needs to laugh about it. forgive and forget, have a laugh, and don’t be too wound up by a word, because i know, as do you all, that human nature is better than that.

I have just had some transcripts from earlier on today presented too me which has led too some very un-earthing conversations. It pains me to read that thus far, no-one has looked and commetted from outside the one-eyed box you people seemed too be vulentarily locked in! Is no-one going to be the first to take the high road and admit that irrespective of race, creed or gender….there seems to be an obvious devition between all said subjects.?!! Rather than spend your time poking eachother in the eye…has anyone actually asked anyone else here on this site…”what would help”?, and further-more would someone please offer a better solution than just personal slights and belittling banter!!
