Let’s Hear It For The Quipper: George Bush And Schwazenegger In Blair

He’s meeting with Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Terminator. “My press officer said to me: Whatever else you do this morning, don’t say ‘I’ll be back’.”

Ooops! He’s said it. But Arnie, Governor of California, does not visibly wince on hearing his catchphrase repeated back to him for the umpteenth time that day. He does not shoot Tony a deadly stare. Or shoot Tony. He smiles.

Arnie and Tony are kindred figures. Was it not Schwarzenegger who threatened to annihilate the world in Terminator only to return as its saviour in the sequel? There was a Terminator 3, but then politicians never know when to quit.

Arnie also starred in films entitled Total Recall, The Running Man and, in a pointer to Tony’s post-political life, The San Pedro Beach Bums. (Blair Caption contest)

Go Blair!

But if we want to hear the real last word on Tony we turn to the Sun (“WHEN PRESIDENTS TALK, THEY TALK TO THE SUN”) and in “BLAIR AIN’T MY POODLE” hear George Bush chew over Tony’s career (without chocking).

gordon_brown.jpgOver 16 pages of tribute, featuring the views of Bill Clinton, Bob Geldof, Bill Gates and Bono (Mr G9), readers get to learn what a straight up kinda guy Tony was.

And hear Bush tell us: “Seeing Tony go is like losing a cherished family member. Pets can do that to you.”

No, not really. Says Dubya: “I’ve heard he’s been called Bush’s poodle. He’s bigger than that [a standard poodle?]. This is just background noise, a distraction from big things.

“We’re working together to achieve global peace in the face of enormous danger.

“This kind of thing is just silly ridicule and that’s how I treat it.

“Somehow our relationship has been seen as Bush saying to Blair ‘Jump’ and Blair saying, ‘How high?’ But that’s just not the way it works. It’s a relationship where we say we’re both going to jump together.”

But you’ll jump with parachute, right George? Or a bungee rope? Or will you, like Thelma and Louise, put your pedal to the metal and less jump than plummet into the abyss?

“Tony and I laugh together,” says Dubya. “I’m a quipper. I sometimes quip.” Let’s hear it for the quipper.

“We’ve served together during a time of war, and shared the same determination to succeed. We analysed the enemy the same way, and found each other in the same foxhole.”

It was 45-minutes of derring-do, laughs and loyalty we shall never forget…
