A Bomb In Central London
Police have disabled a car bomb containing gas cylinders in the heart of central London.
Officers carried out a controlled explosion after reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in Haymarket shortly before 0200 BST (0100 GMT).
The area was cordoned off while police examined what they described as a “potentially viable explosive device”.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Britain faces “a serious and continuous threat”.
He added the public “need to be alert” at all times…
The prime minister’s comments were echoed by the new Home Secretary Jacqui Smith who has chaired a meeting of the government’s emergency unit Cobra.

LONDON — A former Libyan intelligence agent convicted of bombing Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, “may have suffered a miscarriage of justice” and should be granted a new appeal, a Scottish judicial panel ruled Thursday.
Abdel Basset Ali Megrahi was found guilty of murder in the December 1988 bombing, which killed 270 people, including 189 Americans. He was convicted in 2001 and has been serving a life sentence in a prison near Glasgow. Megrahi has long said he is innocent, and he took the case to the independent Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission after a previous appeal was denied.
