Police have raided three football clubs as part of an investigation into alleged corruption in football.
Newcastle United is believed to be one of the clubs raided but the other clubs involved have yet to be named.
The operation is not connected to Lord Stevens’ ongoing Quest inquiry into the Premiership and was “totally independent”, police said…
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that search warrants were served at three football clubs and the homes of two individuals in connection with corruption in football and its impact on owners and shareholders.”
The Times reports:
The Stevens inquiry, commissioned by the Premier League, delivered its latest findings to Richard Scudamore, the league’s chief executive, in mid May.Lord Stevens is understood to have concluded that serious breaches occurred in some of the 362 transfers he investigated over a period of two years. Quest published an interim report in October clearing the majority but saying there were 39 transfers – later reduced to 17 – it could not sign off.
It is understood that detectives have also been receiving information from Quest, the security firm chaired by Lord Stevens.
Update:
Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Rangers are the three clubs involved in the raids.
