THE Mirror reports that health bosses splashed out £84,000 on sending a delegation to Japan in a fact finding mission to find out to how to “increase efficiency”.
Even Mirror readers can’t miss the irony in that. Fourteen doctors and chief executives studied Toyota’s “lean management” techniques.
So are the NHS about to diversify into the automobile industry – have your tonsils out and get an MOT for your car at the same time?

‘Lean’ is just a way of doing your business with little or no waste of resources. For example, when Toyota build a car, all the materials are brought into the factory that morning so the don’t have to pay for a big storage facility and all the costs associated with it. A bit like getting the exact number of sausages and exact amount of chips you need for your evening meal just before you start cooking - you don’t need to buy or pay to run a fridge/freezer or provide the space these would occupy.
It is easy to mock, but how is British car manufacturing doing in comparison to Japan?
It is a very good proven system if implemented correctly, I worked for one company who implemented lean, everyone just tidied their desk and that was it, needless to say it fell flat on it’s arse.
I am not sure why they spent such a huge sum of money going to Japan though, there are loads of good organisations in the UK who can provide effective in-house lean courses. They could have had £80,000 change to spend on a surgeon or a sculpture.

Will they start employing robots in hospitals like they do in car plants?
