The Beckhams In America: They Are Not Amused On Ugly Betty

uglyposh1.jpgAMERICA gave the world Paris and Lindsay, and we suffered in silence. Now Britain has given America Posh and Becks, and Americans are not amused.

Despite all the UK hype about the enormous American appetite for the Beckhams, most people on this side of the Atlantic couldn’t give a toss.

That could be one of the reasons why “Victoria Beckham: Coming to America” was downgraded from a reality TV show to a one-hour NBC special on Monday night. Another reason could be that the idea was crap in the first place.

To see why, you only have to look in the New York Daily News this morning, where columnist Mike Lupica calls David Beckham a “fading star” and rips “ditz” wife Victoria a new vagina.

“David Beckham was once a great soccer player, but those days are gone,” writes Lupica under the headline INVASION OF THE BRIDIOTS. “Soccer people say he still has enough game to be the best soccer player in America, but that’s somewhat like saying the first “Rush Hour” movie was best.”

Meanwhile Lupica reserves the majority of his tirade for vapid Victoria. “It was probably inevitable that television would get around to a ditz like Mrs. Beckham. We’ve had shows about worm-eating and wife-swapping and nannies tougher than Lawrence Taylor, and Anna Nicole, and Paris Hilton herself. Junk upon junk,” he pronounces.

Singling out a scene where Victoria is pulled over by a traffic cop and tells the camera she didn’t know “whether to pose or get arrested,” Lupica chortles. “When I heard that, I was thinking that if you could get arrested FOR posing, she’d already be doing more time than the Unabomber.”

Other newspapers have not been kinder. The New York Times describes Victoria as “somewhat famous for being sort of famous, and is photographed a lot in Britain, a nation so open to media hypnosis that a Web site devoted to the ripening of a 44-pound wheel of cheddar has received more than a million Internet hits.”

And Linda Stasi, writing in the New York Post, gave the show NO STARS, declaring that: “If this weren’t a one-shot deal and people were exposed to her vapid, condescending behavior on a weekly basis, she’d not just be unwelcome in America, she’d be run out on a rail.”

Stasi describes the show as “an orgy of self-indulgence so out of whack with, er, reality that you’ll sit there slack-jawed at the gall of these people who think we are that stupid.”

Er, we thought you were that stupid, Linda. What do you expect after foisting your celebutards on us for years?

Posh Beckham will play herself in two episodes of the hit TV show, Ugly Betty. Reportedly she will be paid $140,000 for her services.
