Madeleine McCann On Your Doormat And In The Loire Valley
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS front page: MADELEINE: Parents are to sue over claims they gave her fatal overdose. (Plus page 7, with logo: THE HUNT FOR MADELEINE: Day 120).
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER brings the news that the McCanns’ legal action is against the Portuguese publication Tal & Qual. (The Express, of course, has dutifully repeated all the allegations and smears that have emanated from the Portuguese press, for the delectation and disgust of Maddywatchers back home.) Spokeswoman Justine McGuinness says the McCanns “are not going to be a doormat any more”.
Meanwhile, the paper says the hunt has switched to a campsite in the Loire valley after sightings by holidaymakers.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 2: Madeleine parents to sue newspaper
The Telegraph reports that the McCanns say they are suing to clear their name, not for the money.
THE TIMES page 5: Candle of hope for Madeleine
The paper says that Madeleine’s classmates “said a poignant prayer” yesterday, on what should have been her first day at school.
DAILY MAIL page 6: McCanns to sue over ‘killers’ slur
The paper says the McCanns believe it is time to stand firm against the allegations.
DAILY MIRROR page 11: Maddy school’s prayers
The paper says the McCanns spent a quiet day with their twins in Praia da Luz.
THE STAR page 22: SCHOOL’S SAD WAIT FOR MISSING MADDIES: Chair and locker are saved for her
The empty chair, locker and coat peg are once again invoked. Bishop Ellis headteacher Gail Neill says: “We are deeply saddened that we cannot yet welcome Madeleine McCann.”
THE SUN page 12: MADDIE SCHOOL PRAYER TRIBUTE
The paper also reports on the candle that is being kept burning at the school.
THE INDEPENDENT and THE GUARDIAN: No Madeleine news today.

Itsme, do british lie detectors stand in a court of law in Britain? They don’t in Portugal. Could Scotland Yard or a judicial entity in Britain prosecute the Mccanns for an alleged crime that was committed in Portugal? That is questionnable. BAck in 2001 another british couple left the Algarve and abandoned in Faro airport their 20-month old daughter. The couple was identified and the information passed on to the British authorities. The baby was taken by local child-care institutions and she has now been adopted by a portuguese family. I have never heard of any action being taken against them in the UK.
Under EU regulations, i think that Portugal would have to request the Mccanns extradition to Portugal - to be judged in portugal.

Itsme… firstly a lie detector proves nothing… they are not foolproof so therefore everyone will continue to believe what they believe anyway. Would it change your thinking if they passed the test?
And what has Scotland Yard got to do with anything? If a crime was committed it was committed in Portugal. UK has no jurisdiction over Portugal at all!
On the radio it said the mcCanns were suing the magazine with the approval of the PJ because the mag was actually saying ‘the police said…’ and the police said they didn’t.
But hey… why let a few boring facts get in the way of a good crucifiction!

4, toni : that i could believe, if they would stand a lie detector test.
as soon as they hit british ground, scotland yard will show up and put them on…
…hopefully…

I have now come to the conclusion that … she was abducted and she has not been found. none of the tapa’s 9 had anything to do with it and the PJ do not know how to handle this situation. end of story or as we say in SA finished and Klaar.

In Portugal Tal & Qual is the bottom feeder of the tabloid press, therefore their reporting is more sensationalist and less careful than the rest of the Portuguese press.
In this case they are the only paper to explicitly state that the PJ believe that the McCann’s killed Madeleine and disposed of the body- no one else has spelt it out clearly, all other news stories have implied and suggested. That is why the Mccanns have singled out Tal & Qual.
(From Daily Mail)
The journalist who wrote it, Catarina Vaz Guerreiro, said: “I can’t reveal my source but I have complete trust in them. I strongly believe the person that told us this information is telling us the truth.”
But Portuguese media commentators said Tal & Qual was a “very bad sensational tabloid” not known for having good police sources.
The story was also dismissed by Portuguese police, who said it had “no authority”.

Well said. It is both a smokescreen to divert attention from their guilt, and obviously another handy way to make more money. Sue me Gerry??

Why single out Tal and Quil when all the papers basically reported the same things. Think of all the money they could make taking everyone who ever said anything they didn’t like to court?
Then there’s the problem of how Portuguese courts work. S l o w l y. No one sues because the process is so long and drawn out. I can’t see the Portuguese government, if it ever got to court, awarding a dime to the McCanns. They started this wild publicity bit and must deal with the consequences.
Poor Madeleine, stuck with these two con artists are parents, even if they aren’t guilty. They are guilty of neglect. That’s a given.
