Jack McCann, father of Gerald (“Gerry”) McCann was an influential politician from the Labour Party, elected as a Member of Parliament in a 1958 by-election, in Rochdale, near Manchester. This campaign is in Media history books, as the first by-election to be covered by television. BBC has decided not to cover it, but Granada TV, an ITN franchise, decided to report the campaign. After the Labour Party smashing victory, Harold Macmillan, British Prime Minister from 1957 to 1963, decided to give his first TV interview as Prime-Minister, talking to a BBC program called “Press Conference” and on a ITV “Tell The People.”
Jack McCann (1910-1972) studied at elementary school and then at classes of the National Council of Labour Colleges and Workers’ Educational Association. An engineer, he served as councillor on Eccles Borough Council in 1945 and was leader of the Labour Group. Elected in 1958 to the Parliament, in 1964 he was appointed to the Government’s Whips’ Office as Lord Commissioner of the Treasury, than in 1966 as Vice-Chamberlain of the Household, returning to be a Lord of the Treasury 1967–69.
The fact that Gerald (“Gerry”) McCann is the son of a late Labour Party high ranking politician may help to explain how the couple was able to build the Media machine that took Madeleine McCann case to all over the world, from the Vatican to near the White House. And also why there has been a connection so strong between the nº 10 of Downing Street and the father of the missing child. As we first referred, on August 26, it was the British Prime-Minster, Gordon Brown, who suggested to Gerald McCann, on the eve of the MediaGuardian Edinburgh Television Festival, that it was time to scale down the campaign to find Madeleine.
But in the last days there have been some signals that show the support for McCann family is starting to loose speed and strength. Gerald McCann gave an interview, on August 28, to the Independent Catholic News, where he felt the need to explain that the couple meeting with the Pope has nothing to see with his high profile campaign. Gerald McCann said that Cardinal Cormac, who was the middle-man who moved things in order to get that meeting, had told them that Pope Benedict would meet “other Catholic parents” in similar circumstances. “The cardinal made clear that it wasn’t necessary to have a high profile media campaign to be given this opportunity,” Gerald McCann told the newspaper.
Now, that Kate McCann could be charged in connection with her daughter disappearance, according to family sources and her lawyer, quoted by Sky News, some other strong supporters may be thinking twice. Like, for example, some of the hundreds of policemen who gave Gerald McCann, a standing ovation during the ceremony to present the Police Bravery Awards.

John (Jack) McCann WAS an influential politician from the Labour Party, elected as a Member of Parliament in a 1958 by-election, in Rochdale.
He was my father and friend.
Although we have the same family name we have no connection to the family involved in this sad affair.
Please stop bringing distress to yet another family by your scurillous speculation.

if they did overdose her, maybe caused brain damage or something, maybe she is still alive, being looked after by other doctor friends, if it did get out that they overdosed her and she is sadly, brain dead that would explain why she has been hidden, that would explain dna traces left in the vehicle a few weeks later, my guese she is still alive, but in a very ill state

Roz, the reason I don’t believe the parents did it is not because I find it hard to believe that they could have possibly done it in principle, but because of what it would entail in this particular instance. It’s too ludicrous to be true from too many different angles. That, however, is not fully apparently until you begin to give the case a little thought beyond a knee-jerk reaction. I believe most people want them to be guilty to “punish” them for leaving their children alone, and that is sadly colouring their judgement of these allegations.

What the hell are all you brits talking about, if you are on vacation it is okay to leave your children unattended? What kind of a country are you people from? If you want to go on vacation and not be bothered with your children, then leave them with family. If one has children there is no break whether on vacation or otherwise, get the drift?????????????

Oh and another thing.. the theory that the same car which had been hired out to the people who took Maddie and then used it to get rid of her body was conveniently hired out to her parents and evidence which incriminated them was later found in it.. hmm.. thats so far fetched.. unless of course the entire algarve is involved in stitching them up.. doubtful but still..

Why is it so hard for people to believe that the parents could have possibly done this?? It seems like everyone here is willing to blame tom, dick and harry as long as the McCann’s are not put into the spotlight. How many other cases have there been where parents have killed children?? accidentally.. intentionally.. it makes no difference.. they’ve still done it.
At best they are guilty of neglect.. anyone with an ounce of common sense would be able to see that.. at worst.. they’re guilty of manslaughter.. either way they’re guilty of something.
Jeanette.. forgetting to lock your back door is a mistake.. not closing your garden gate is a mistake.. not realising you’ve closed the dog outside is a mistake.. leaving three children alone in an apartment, in a foreign country, without any real knowledge of the ins and outs of that country.. that is NOT a mistake.. thats stupidity and foolishness.. need a break?? get a pizza!! stay at home!! tuck them in and lounge on the sofa!! You do NOT leave them so you can go out for a margherita!
Two things stopped me from believing one of them had done it and they’d all tried to cover it up.
1. They didn’t know Portugal. They’d never even been there on holiday before. How would they know a place inconspicuous enough to confidently leave a body where it would not be found for a nearly a month, only to then remove it from there and find an equally good hiding place for the rest of the time?
2. What kind of parent would have the stomach to remove their child’s body from one place to another after almost a month of them being dead?? And not show any emotion before or after the event? Not to mention the fact that the media was all over them.
This, however, would all be sorted with a little help from a neighbour who conveniently enough is staying close by.. no names mentioned..
Their friend’s statements are not in the least bit coherent.. how can so many people have so many different stories if there is only one thing which happened?? Obviously there’s more to it than meets the eye.. as has always been the case..

i cant go with this as its really a wild theroy. but i do think they were involved and that the other ‘tapas9′were in on it. but i cant see them sitting down one night and one says ‘you know we could do witha new house but cant afford one so lets pretend one of our kids is abducted and when we get blamed we’ll sue’ and the other says ‘good idea which one?’ ‘oh maddy shes so photogenic oh and lets go visit the pope while we’re about it I’ve always wanted to do that’

That would make a riveting novel. And I mean that as a compliment. You are an eloquent and compelling writer with a vivid imagination. The plot is almost even credible. Sadly though, Gerry McCann just doesn’t seem that duplicitous. I say sadly because your plot, if it were true, would mean that Madeleine was alive and well.

I believe that it all began with a plan that needed to be put forward. This plan is to extract huge amounts of libel compensations across a wide spectrum of sources. The plan is put forward and is in its early stages of operation at the time of writing.
The McCann group of professionals planned to extract huge amounts of money from the public.
They searched for an ideal location, preferably an overseas seaside holiday resort, with the least amount of police activities, and during a full summer season where the area is bustling with tourists.
After a careful search, the Algarve area seems to be an ideal choice for such a scenario.
The location had previously been the centre of another tragedy, and from the outcome of that tragedy, fitted exactly in the plan.
A local resident (X) befriending the group begins with the preliminary search for an apartment, in a condo where very few locals have access to, and one can get integrated in.
The local resident (X) co-ordinates his activities with the group’s HQ in the UK, and a date was set for the plan to be put into operation.
Outline of the plot:
Create a fake abduction plan where the Daughter is being abducted during a parent’s night out with friends (i.e. the group).
Whilst it is alleged that they take turns in monitoring the children asleep in their quarters, a member of the group (O’Brian) decides to check on his children, whilst away from the table, his role is to remove the girl and place her in one of the group’s apartment.
His partner’s role (Ms. Tanner) is to inform the Police that she has seen a man carrying a child wrapped in a blanket, in case O’Brian was seen leaving the apartment.
Later in the evening, Gerry went to check on his children, and claimed that all three children were asleep in bed.
An hour later, the Kate went to check and found their daughter missing. She immediately returns to the restaurant full of holiday makers screaming that (They have taken her?)
The plan is beginning to take shape. The whole group was to enter the apartment and contaminate the scene. A neighbour asked Kate if she called the police, of which she replied (not yet). Instead, she contacted the UK and Phil (her sister-in-law) contacted GMTV claiming that the P.J. were doing nothing about looking for her niece.
During the flurry of activities, it gave the group with their accomplice ample time to whisk the abducted child to a safe house away from the scene that night.
In their plot, it was also planned that a professional PR is being used to obtain maximum coverage and impact on the public at large.
The Media, Police, and the public focused their attention on the immediate scene of the crime and questioned the parents and their friends. The plot is meant that no two stories match, thus creating doubts in the minds of the investigating police.
Now that the plot has drawn substantial publicity, the public’s reaction and response, the family has asked for financial help to find their missing child.
During the following months, a lot of money was donated to the fund.
Following the plot, the trail seemed to come to a halt. No clues, no witnesses despite sightings and false alarms.
To re-ignite the plan, a car was rented 5 weeks after the alleged abduction evidence was planted by the parents in the boot of the car to throw suspicion on themselves, bearing in mind the profession of the parents having full knowledge in forensic science.
The planted evidence is described as follows:
- Blood in the apartment: Was carefully placed and removed to create suspicion.
- Hair in the boot of the car: Easily obtained.
- Dead Body odour: As reported, being in contact with corpses at work can easily be transferred.
The enigma of the whereabouts of the body for 5 weeks becomes irrelevant, as there never was a body.
This accounts for the lack of grief, emotion, and their complete care-free posture.
Following the created plot which is incidentally right on track, they are now about to be charged for the death of their daughter.
They had asked for expensive lawyers, to be paid from the ever growing fund. On seeing the public’s reaction in swaying against them, immediately retracted this request.
The scenario that follows is, a full trial, with the possibility of a conviction, and when the right moment arrives, the child will appear on a side-road, or left somewhere safe.
The final stage of this plot is to claim tremendous amounts of damages, from everyone concerned, knowing full well that no law-enforcement agency will be able to convict them, as NO MURDER HAS BEEN Committed.
I also believe that they know this theory is very hard to prove.

jeeves. a couple leaves 3 small children alone while they go out having a good time and one vanishes. of course they need to be investigated. and of course there are children in the world who are in dire need of care and protection and the Mccann children are 3 of them. in the worse way. after all one has probably died, or as you seem to believe has been abducted, so how much more danger could they have been in. also it sounds as if you think blood from the apartment was planted in the car? wherever it came from its suppose to be from a dead body and its hers.

Why don’t the social services stop meddling in people’s lives? How many children are there in the world in dire need of care and protection from endangerment? Do they seriously believe that the McCanns’ children are somehow worse off than those other children are? They should get off their high horse and do something constructive for society instead of obsessing over this single case.
These allegations don’t ring true. I don’t believe for one second that the McCanns had anything to do with this. It’s all too easy to construe the facts in such a way that DNA found in the apartment was purported to have been found in the boot. The police didn’t even have to plant it there. Just a little “white lie” was enough to poison the well. Sorry, but this case stinks to high heaven of a stitch-up. After all, they’ve done it before according to all reports. At the very least there is no hard evidence so far that suggests that the McCanns played a part in this. When are the police going to resume their search for Madeleine, or doesnt’ she matter anymore?

I just feel so sorry for this family.I have to say that when I first heard of Maddie’s disappearance I thought “Probably the parents”.Sadly when children are harmed it usually is the very ones who are suppossed to protect them who do the harm.
However as the facts emerged I am convinced they are only guilty of poor judgement.Parents are not perfect they make mistakes.
I am sure there are many ways that DNA evidence could have got into the boot of the car including “planting” evidence by the police.
Also there must be intense political pressure from the Government for the Police to solve this case-think tourism etc.They may genuinely believe in the guilt of the parents too & may have not investigated other avenues because of this belief & how well resourced are they?This investigation must be costing them a fortune.
I just hope that Madeliene’s fate is revealed & her family’s agony lessened.It will never go away as whatever has happened to her will cause pain for everyone.

Whatever the media says you grab hold like facts. Nothing has REALLY been diclosed because all THEIR supposely SECRECY LAWS… and yet this was their intention all along to take the MCCAnns down but giving journalist in portugual some of their erroneous leads. PEOPLE think about ALL the evidence (that we have thus far)

A scandal over a paedophile ring run from a state orphanage gripped Portugal yesterday as it threatened to engulf diplomats, media personalities and senior politicians.
Photographs of unnamed senior government officials with young boys from Lisbon’s Casa Pia orphanage were among the evidence reportedly available to police after they arrested a former orphanage employee called Carlos Silvino.
A number of former residents, and the mother of one boy who is still there, have denounced sexual attacks on children at what is known as Lisbon’s most famous orphanage.
Mr Silvino, it was claimed, abused children himself and procured boys for a powerful group of clients.
He has publicly denied the allegations and was expected to repeat that denial at a closed-door bail hearing in Lisbon yesterday.
What has most shocked the Portuguese have been the revelations that systematic sexual abuse of children at the home had allegedly been going on for more than 20 years and had been known to police and other authorities for most of that time.
A former president, General Ramalho Eanes, was allegedly among those who knew about abuse at the home but failed to stop it.
The identity of the mysterious group of powerful paedophiles remained a secret yesterday, with only one person prepared to admit she knew at least some of the names.
Former secretary of state for families, Teresa Costa Macedo, said she had sent a dossier containing photographs and testimonies from children to the police 20 years ago but they had done nothing about it, while she was subjected to a campaign of threats.
“He [Silvino] was just one element in a huge paedophile network that involved important people in our country,” Mrs Costa Macedo explained in a newspaper interview. “It wasn’t just him. He was a procurer of children for well-known people who range from diplomats and politicians to people linked to the media.”
The material sent to the police, which yesterday appeared to have been lost, was damning proof of the activities of the paedophile ring, Mrs Costa Macedo said.
“There are photographs, an account of the methods used to spirit children out of the orphanage and testimonies of a number of children,” she explained.
Mrs Costa Macedo said that many of the photographs were found at the house of a Portuguese diplomat in the town of Estoril, 20 miles from Lisbon. Four children who had gone missing from the orphanage were discovered at the house, where they had spent several days allegedly under lock and key.
President Eanes was introduced to five boys who told him of the abuse occurring at the orphanage in 1980 but failed to act on it, according to Mrs Costa Macedo.
There was no suggestion that General Eanes, a popular and respected figure who did not comment on the allegations yesterday, was involved in the paedophile ring.
Portuguese police insisted yesterday they had no record of the documents sent to them by Mrs Costa Macedo.
She said she had been the target of a campaign of intimidation to make her stop investigating the case.
“I received anonymous threats, by phone and post. They said they would kill me, flay me and a lot of other things,” she said.
That campaign had started again yesterday, she said, with threatening phone calls made to her home.
Portugal has increasingly been under the scrutiny of anti-paedophile groups who have denounced its lax laws and uninterested courts for creating a paedophiles’ paradise in Europe.
Belgian and Dutch paedophile groups are reported to have operated in Portugal, with foreigners travelling to the island of Madeira to seek out young children.
Investigators from the Swiss-based Innocence in Danger group, which claims children regularly disappear from the poorer streets of Portuguese towns and cities, say they too have been harassed and threatened.
Mr Silvino claimed his accusers were making up their allegations. “It is all lies,” he said.
The orphanage’s director and deputy director were sacked on Monday as the government pledged to clear up the case as soon as possible.

They evidently assume that because those who go by that title ought to be our protectors, that it can only ever be that way. That which is ideal and that which is real, however, are not very good bedfellows.

Don’t worry Pat, it doesn’t matter to me whether or not you have a position. What interests me is what is really happening. You don’t have to take the position that the police were framing the McCanns, and I myself do not. TO construe a case against someone doesn’t necessarily mean to frame them. I do feel, however, that it is naive to believe they the McCanns are NOT being framed, especially given the alleged problematic behaviour of the PJ in cases of this kind.
I’m not defending their acts of omission, but the McCanns were in holiday mode, not in “Catch a Criminal” mode, when they went out to dinner.

Don’t forget Casa Pia! 20 years of sexual abuse by officials in Portugal. Several officials were named in connection with abusing children and some were even found guilty of sexual abuse. Makes one wonder if there is taste for this sort of thing there.

I think that the Police have much to hide and the heat is on them. Maybe some things are surfacing that they don’t want the rest of the world to know about? Maybe supply and demand and slowed down too much for this sort of thing because the McCanns are making waves and too many eyes are on them? What better way to take the heat off of them than to blame the weak McCanns and chase them out?
Why now after months of dragging their feet by not allowing sniffer dogs in from the UK and not following up with the social worker that claimed to have spotted Madeleine in Morocco and whatever else we don’t we know about? I wonder? Are they protecting one/several of their own? What did they have to lose in working with the authorities from the UK? It would have been a show of good faith to the world that Portugal cared about this little girl enough to work with law enforcement from other countries.
There is a mother in jail there who lost her 9 year old girl just 7 miles away from where Madeleine went missing. That mom was “eventually” accused of murder and jailed too? Did she and her husband make a lot of waves too? There is no such thing as a coincidence in a situation like this.
I would not invest a penny in Praia da luz! I will never go there. All they have shown me is how unsafe and non supportive they are to their guests and how little they value children….look what they did to their own.

There are points I disagree for now.
You say the officers will go back to two hour lunch breaks but remember the parents were off dining for a long time when Madeleine went missing. So, Madeleine goes missing while people are dining and people are having long lunch while looking for Madeleine. One position I have taken from the beginning is that Madeleine is the victim.
I am open minded to any ideas or explanations for Madeleine’s disappearance but NO I don’t believe the Portugal police are trying to frame the McCanns.
We agree that all of this is hard to believe. Most likely time will tell the tale. I believe that.

The PJ are evidently frustrated because the McCanns, like bad pennies always turning up, won’t stop the search effort, and, until this, even wanted to take it into higher gear, thus making it all too plain that the police themselves have nothing to show for their efforts, which were apparently mostly just a front anyway.
So they’ve evidently now construed this whole “the MCacanns did it” farce against the parents in an ill-conceived effort to cover up their own ineptitute. Th officers will then be able to go back to taking two hour long lunch breaks again, while the perps continue to stick two fingers up at Portuguese justice and, as a bonus, enjoy watching the McCanns squirm.

Let’s put these DNA rumors to rest.

As she says, they were nothing but crocodile tears. So if Kate McCann wanted to cover up an accidental death and give the impression that she was innocent, it was easy enough to fake the tears.

In fact my wife just pointed out that Ian Huntley cried in public. So did Joanne Nelson’s boyfriend, the guy that killer her. .
