Madeleine McCann: Kate And Gerry’s Blood, Threat And Tears
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “KATE’S AGONY – CONFESS & YOU’RE OUT IN A YEAR.”
“Deal of blood, threat and tears.” Kate McCann is being interviewed by police. This is a “highly-charged confrontation, Portuguese officers citing forensic evidence told the GP she would receive a jail sentence of between two and three years if she signed a confession.”
Kate McCann is “horrified”. Says she: “How dare you?”
A source tells the paper: “The police were trying to get Kate to say she had amnesia or was in shock or had a breakdown. They said if she signed the confession she’d serve a year and that her husband would not be charged and could go home. It was effectively emotional blackmail.”
“SHOCKED” Gerry McCann has been named as a formal suspect.
THE SUN SAYS: “But the allegations made yesterday against Madeleine’s distraught mother Kate are astonishing and, in places, farcical. A suspicious page of the Bible left open? A call to a priest on the day of Maddie’s disappearance? Not exactly a smoking gun.”
Do all crimes involve a smoking gun?
The Sun concludes: “The Sun desperately wants justice for Maddie. But the greatest pity is that she is the one person who seems to have been forgotten in this mess of incompetence.”
And the Press continue to watch the parents.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: DEATH ON MUM’S BIBLE.”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER writes of “THE DAY THE JEERING STARTED”.
“Just two days ago Kate McCann, 39, was regarded almost universally as a victim who had suffered unimaginable agony. Families everywhere shared her heartbreak at losing her beautiful daughter. But it was clear yesterday, as the GP arrived to be formally named as a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance, that much of that sympathy has now gone.”
The crowd outside the police station – 400-strong – goes into a “frenzy” when Kate McCann arrives. “There were whistles, then jeers and boos before some in the crowd began to shout insults. ‘Whore… daughter of a whore,’ some yelled in Portuguese.”
The Express translates.
A local man says: “They will find this more and more because in Portugal harming a child is the worst thing…The Portuguese people took them to their hearts and now we feel cheated. It will not be nice in Portugal for them now.”
Kate is “cool and collected”.
DAILY MAIL front page: “THE ACCUSED. Portuguese police’s staggering grilling of Madeleine mother.
• Why was her blood in your car?
• Did you drug her that night?
• Confess and get just two years.”
DAILY STAR front page: “YOU KILLED MADDIE.”
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE SENSATION. We have found her blood in the boot of your hire car.. DID YOU KILL HER BY ACCIDENT?” This is “what police asked Kate McCann during 16-hour grilling”.
THE GUARDIAN front page: “Mother, victim…suspect: police target Kate McCann.”
THE TELEGRAPH: “Kate and Gerry McCann named as suspects,” says the headline.
“Mr McCann stared straight ahead as his suspect status was announced and refused to answer questions from awaiting journalists. A crowd which had been attending a concert in the town square earlier listened to the announcement and several people gasped audibly.”
In “Villagers back Madeleine McCann’s parents”, the paper journeys to Rothey, Leicestershire, the McCanns’ home town. Michelle Canilleri, who lives in Rothley, shares with the world: “I can’t believe it. This is such a shock. They have got the wrong people. No way in the world would either Kate or Gerry harm any of their children.”
THE INDEPENDENT front page: “FROM ANGUISHED PARENT, TO GRIEVING MOTHER, TO SUSPECT.”
“Shortly before 11am, Mrs McCann’s spokeswoman, Justine McGuinness, revealed that the 39-year-old GP was being made an arguida – official suspect – in the case. And then she uttered the six short words which will be inconceivable to some who have followed this case and a confirmation of long-held suspicions to others. ‘Kate fears she will be charged,’ Ms McGuinness said.”

Just been reading through the Mail report from the 5th May.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=452633&in_page_id=1770&in_page_id=1770&ct=5&expand=true
Several things strike me as odd (perhaps with the benefit of hindsight.
1. Gerry rang his sister on the night to say that Maddie had been abducted. (Again its this assumption of abduction rather than missing)
2. An owner of the neighbouring apartment states that the shutters are heavy and difficult to open. (If someone would have been trying to break in surely they would have been heard.)
3. They had recently moved in to a £600K house and had paid for IVF for 3 kids. (How could a young consultant and his wife who was working part time temporarily afford all this?)

what could be the possible reason for murats mother to be still under an oath of silence?
September 9th, 2007 at 11:58 pm
Dr Russell O brian
Jane Tate
whom incidentally was the witness who saw a man carrying a child
And who’s own child was throwing up that night
Could it be that they too were using sedatives on their children too, hence why they are not really palying ball and silent?

Elizabeth - I also have some inside information from a senior British source that raises very serious questions about the McCann’s agenda right at the beginning. There is stuff that has not been released which makes things look rather worse for them than what is already out there, in however garbled a form.
I’m still not SURE they killed their daughter by accident, but I have been offering bets, for want of a better way of expressing my expectation that there will be a trial in Portugal or England. At even odds, I think I will get quite a bit of token ‘told you so’ satisfaction.
As for the result of a trial… I’m less sure. I think there would probably have to be a confession from one of 3 or 4 people, since the PJ definitely did screw up the first phase of the investigation.

it could have been a pre-op kate

1223:
Bulldump, are you suggesting that the other rent boy was O’Brien?
September 9th, 2007 at 11:50 pm
well, how about gerry’s refusal to answer no less than 40 questions during his interview,
it was hurtful and unhelpful to the investigation
September 9th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
BULLDUMP 1224;
Good notion my friend, and if it were down to me, not only would I seize the fund but I’d make ‘em pay back interest!! Sadly, in order to prove that they acted with any mal intention or deception, an ACTION would have to prove that, from the outset, the McCanns KNEW that Maddy HAD’NT been abducted!! They certainly wouldn’t have to offer any evidence of an abduction. Of course, if it subsequently proven that they have committed something FAR more heineous that deception, then such a lawsuit would be easy to prove. By then, however, methinks team McCann would have a LOT more to worry about than litigation to recover funds……..
September 9th, 2007 at 11:48 pm
1224: Trismegistus,
You are absolutely spot on.
One of the most worrying aspects of the modern journalism is how lazy reporters just regurgitate pap and spin feed to them without ever checking the facts.
Whatever happened to verification of sources and integrity?
September 9th, 2007 at 11:47 pm
lol, it’s a funny thing to say something was smelly in denmark since that is where i am stationed at present
September 9th, 2007 at 11:45 pm
PS Guys………….
About the fund………?? Any lawyer worth his salt will argue that, as the Portuguese appear to have mishandled and misconstrued the evidence, resulting in an erroneous status of Aguido being applied to the McCanns, thus impeding their hitherto active ’search’ for Maddy, then utilising the said funds to defend against the said erroneous status and/ or subsequent charges, will meet the criteria as depicted in the ‘Find Maddy Fund’………….
September 9th, 2007 at 11:43 pm
Matthew - I’ve thought that for the last 2 days. Where else would the ‘We’re convinced the child is dead’, and the stuff about a ‘damaged neck’ come from?
September 9th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
greeting spuddy, did you read my earlier post?………
surely if the police in england charged the mccanns with fraud and deception, since there is no evidence of an abduction, the mccanns would have to prove that an abduction took place to prove their innocence.
since the whole fund and the selling of merchandise was based upon the premise that an abduction had taken place
September 9th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
If they are charged and convicted they can possibly face charges in the UK
for obtaining money by deception
Note that their website is hosted in the UK
Thus it is a UK matter

1186: Martin, thanks for your thinking person’s reply. As I read it, I wondered whether you were me in disguise!!?
You express many of my own sentiments and thoughts very articulately.
I am fascinated by this story as I have been fascinated by no other media sensationalism that I can remember, ever. It’s worth asking why, and it’s worth understanding one’s own head before having a go at others.
At first I was just appalled at the lack of restraint or judgement by otherwise serious media entities. I wrote several angry letters to the BBC regarding their placement of non-news events regarding this case at the top of their website. Unfounded wishes expressed by the parents and the release of new family photos (carefully rationed by the McCanns into the media stream) were the favourites. My friends that watch television (I don’t) were even more outraged than I was; apparently the BBC even sent a news anchor to Portugal to report every 5 minutes that there was no new news. (”Yes, I can now confirm that the police have not said anything new regarding the disappearance of the photogenic child Madeleine McCann…”)
After a few days it dawned on me that this sort of media frenzy doesn’t just whip itself up; it seemed orchestrated. Taking a bit of a closer look at it, it became evident to me that it was being whipped up by the McCanns, their relations and various “spokesmen” that started appearing.
It occurred to me as the McCanns became more and more famous, jet-setted around Europe and went to meet the Pope etc, etc… that if one sat down and thought about ways in which one might get celebrity status for oneself without actually accomplishing anything, being the parents of a disappeared photogenic white girl might be a very good way of doing it. Accompanied, of course, by a well-orchestrated media pity-oriented campaign.
At this time, one was not allowed by popular opinion to express such a thought on any internet forum. I started looking for forums that were not censored; they were few and far between. This one was one that seemed less restrictive than others, yet not egregiously awful like some of the others that allowed one to state that the McCanns might not be as deserving of unquestioning pity as everyone seemed to think.
The usual argument levelled at everyone then who dared criticise them was “you must not have children, you sicko. You should take a hard look at yourself. How can you not care about this little girl? If she was yours, you would be trying anything to find her!”
Far be it from me to come out opposed to motherhood and apple pie… but I started thinking that this was all a sham and a scam; something was distinctly smelly in the state of Denmark… or in this case, Portugal.
Since then the media opinion has turned, and the facts in the case have lined up to prove that we cynical bastards that thought a photogenic child was not a reason to lose all powers of critical thought just may have been right.
The worm has well and truly turned… for now if I want to suggest that there is a possibility that the McCanns may not be complete snakes, in order to avoid being jumped on I have to emphasise that I don’t like them one little bit.
Just like, at the beginning, if you said anything the least bit critical of them, you had to emphasise that you did, after all, have compassion for their predicament.
There are probably lessons we can all learn- about the perception of certainty and the power of the media- from this case.
Thanks Martin. From Hermes xx.

ARE YOU SUGGESTING THAT GERRY WAS ONE OF THE MALE PROSTITUTES?
September 9th, 2007 at 11:38 pm
Greetings, fellow enthuses..Martin, Bulldump et el………….
Rather like I feared, and rather like I have stated ad nauseum, good ol’ Gerry and Kate will get away with it, especially with friends like the Murdoch empire………
“.what more pain and suffering does poor Kate have to endure?…………..( Kay ‘Hurley’ Burley.Sky News.

VC
Where did you hear that?
September 9th, 2007 at 11:38 pm
BD - the CPS wouldn’t do that - but I see no reason why someone who had given money to the Fund couldn’t sue them for return of their contribution, on the basis of FindMaddy obtaining the money by deception. It would be a civil suit. If the McCanns contested it, they’d have to prove there had been no deception
September 9th, 2007 at 11:38 pm
exactly, they cannot assume an abduction took place since there is no body.
there is no evidence an abduction ever took place so how can they have collected money for a speculated event?
FRAUD

It should be noted that Justine McGuiness was part of Mark Oaten’s unsuccessful campaign team for the Liberal Democrat leadership.
For those not from the UK, Mr Oaten was forced to withdraw from the contest after a three in a bed romp with two male prostitues, which he blamed on his receding hairline. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Oaten for more.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:36 pm
Hi everyone, I have a feeling that police may have the body
September 9th, 2007 at 11:35 pm
i honestly believe that if someone i knew had gone missing or been murdered i would want as much information from the police as possible.
it appears that they have not been giving him information at all but he has been telling us all that that they have.
vc, i think gerry has a brother, his name is walter mitty
September 9th, 2007 at 11:34 pm
How can the police possibly assume that w/out the body? How would the go and figure that?
September 9th, 2007 at 11:33 pm
It was Piriton not calpol
September 9th, 2007 at 11:32 pm

I’m back again -
bob 1202 - I heard a few weeks ago - heard not read - from a very reliable source - that the British police suspected that Madeleine had died from an overdose of Calpol.

bulldump 1189:
Reminds me of Ian Huntley getting close to journalists, so he could find out more about the police enquiry.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:29 pm
if the police had emerged and told the world that gerrys interview was unhelpful and hurtfull to the investigation, as gerry and kate have attacked the police in a similar way, i would have pissed my pants and spilt my beer
September 9th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
So, how many of y’all think the Mccan’s did it?? I do
