Madeleine McCann: Kate And Gerry’s Blood, Threat And Tears
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “KATE’S AGONY – CONFESS & YOU’RE OUT IN A YEAR.”
“Deal of blood, threat and tears.” Kate McCann is being interviewed by police. This is a “highly-charged confrontation, Portuguese officers citing forensic evidence told the GP she would receive a jail sentence of between two and three years if she signed a confession.”
Kate McCann is “horrified”. Says she: “How dare you?”
A source tells the paper: “The police were trying to get Kate to say she had amnesia or was in shock or had a breakdown. They said if she signed the confession she’d serve a year and that her husband would not be charged and could go home. It was effectively emotional blackmail.”
“SHOCKED” Gerry McCann has been named as a formal suspect.
THE SUN SAYS: “But the allegations made yesterday against Madeleine’s distraught mother Kate are astonishing and, in places, farcical. A suspicious page of the Bible left open? A call to a priest on the day of Maddie’s disappearance? Not exactly a smoking gun.”
Do all crimes involve a smoking gun?
The Sun concludes: “The Sun desperately wants justice for Maddie. But the greatest pity is that she is the one person who seems to have been forgotten in this mess of incompetence.”
And the Press continue to watch the parents.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: DEATH ON MUM’S BIBLE.”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER writes of “THE DAY THE JEERING STARTED”.
“Just two days ago Kate McCann, 39, was regarded almost universally as a victim who had suffered unimaginable agony. Families everywhere shared her heartbreak at losing her beautiful daughter. But it was clear yesterday, as the GP arrived to be formally named as a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance, that much of that sympathy has now gone.”
The crowd outside the police station – 400-strong – goes into a “frenzy” when Kate McCann arrives. “There were whistles, then jeers and boos before some in the crowd began to shout insults. ‘Whore… daughter of a whore,’ some yelled in Portuguese.”
The Express translates.
A local man says: “They will find this more and more because in Portugal harming a child is the worst thing…The Portuguese people took them to their hearts and now we feel cheated. It will not be nice in Portugal for them now.”
Kate is “cool and collected”.
DAILY MAIL front page: “THE ACCUSED. Portuguese police’s staggering grilling of Madeleine mother.
• Why was her blood in your car?
• Did you drug her that night?
• Confess and get just two years.”
DAILY STAR front page: “YOU KILLED MADDIE.”
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE SENSATION. We have found her blood in the boot of your hire car.. DID YOU KILL HER BY ACCIDENT?” This is “what police asked Kate McCann during 16-hour grilling”.
THE GUARDIAN front page: “Mother, victim…suspect: police target Kate McCann.”
THE TELEGRAPH: “Kate and Gerry McCann named as suspects,” says the headline.
“Mr McCann stared straight ahead as his suspect status was announced and refused to answer questions from awaiting journalists. A crowd which had been attending a concert in the town square earlier listened to the announcement and several people gasped audibly.”
In “Villagers back Madeleine McCann’s parents”, the paper journeys to Rothey, Leicestershire, the McCanns’ home town. Michelle Canilleri, who lives in Rothley, shares with the world: “I can’t believe it. This is such a shock. They have got the wrong people. No way in the world would either Kate or Gerry harm any of their children.”
THE INDEPENDENT front page: “FROM ANGUISHED PARENT, TO GRIEVING MOTHER, TO SUSPECT.”
“Shortly before 11am, Mrs McCann’s spokeswoman, Justine McGuinness, revealed that the 39-year-old GP was being made an arguida – official suspect – in the case. And then she uttered the six short words which will be inconceivable to some who have followed this case and a confirmation of long-held suspicions to others. ‘Kate fears she will be charged,’ Ms McGuinness said.”

I’d be interested to know whether the McCanns did their own laundry or if someone else at the Ocean Club Resort had access to their clothes, and where was their hire car during their visit to the Vatican. Who else may have used it?
There’s a new thread as of 8.30am - I’ve kept this one open and only just realised.

Anyone know if it is more acceptable in Scotland (than England) to give children something to help them sleep?
It wasn’t long ago that alcohol was used for this.

I mostly lurk here, fascinated and sometimes amused at the comments. It’s like a drug I keep coming back for. One post jumped out at me and I’m not sure who wrote it, but I agree. I was once asked if I was English or American. I’m neither since I’ve lived in Portugal for many, many years and married into this culture and experience it differently than an expat.
The post I’m referring to:
“I am a portuguese woman, live in Algarve. Not speak or write english well(but a litle better than the english people who came to Portugal or residents).
Wheñ Madie desapear I(and all portuguese people) was side by side to the parents and friends, but meanwhile the things are worse.
How can the english media condemn all Portuguese police and the portuguese media, etc., when you never speak about the big first mistake and a crime cometed by the Madeleine parents???You never say the word ALONE when speak about that the day that McCanns left “ALONE” 3 children!!!!They are 3 children.Do you forgoten this?In your country this act is not a crime? This parents arent to judge???Problably yf they are a portuguese couple in your country, they are condemn.
Always treat english with respect and simpaty, always try to talk in english, we TRY……….always….but the english people think they are the King of the world for us(and other countries). Why???
Why is noty possible that MacCan’s are envolved in Maddie desapear ?All is possible. A good portuguese parents NEVER left ALONE a children……..3 children??? Not possible.
How is possible put 3 children a sleep in same time???
How is possible to do an apointment to The Pope so easy??? I ask if it is possible the same with a simple portuguese couple(or a english couple)
So many asks to ask to Mac Can’s. Who are behind to protect this couple????
How many children are desapear in english???? They have the same tratment????
The english treat us like a servant. Many times I like have a President mad like Hugo Chavez, because he speak no correct political.
Since today i never will be the same to the english in Algarve.
I begin for no more speak english.
It is a shame!!!!”
Is *is* a shame the way Brits treat the Portuguese, the way they make snide comments about them on their little expat forums and there’s no way in the world a Portuguese would be afforded the hospitality given to them in England as is given to them here. The Portuguese I know who have lived in England, France and other countries have been treated as second-class citizens. Would the English allow the Portuguese to buy up their most valuable property and then print the menus in Portuguese? I didn’t think so.
Many here have said they’d never visit this country after all that’s happened. That’s bollocks! The McCanns were guests here, no one invited them and through their negligence, they’ve just about destroyed the reputation of this country.
More power to the woman who will never speak English again. She’s spot on!
September 10th, 2007 at 10:23 am
Roll on devolution…then they would be reported as a ‘Scottish couple’ rather than a British or English one.
And Liverpool is practically Welsh.

It will be interesting to see which apartment at the Ocean Club contained the other forensic clues. If it was an unrented one, then my suspicion falls on someone else close the club who has not been mentioned here so far, but who has access to property and would have been able to monitor the groups movements easily.

Wow, peeps are still talking about Murat!! This guy will be releasing a book in the next few days once he loses “suspect” status, to tell his story of “Innocent until proven guilty”… Perhaps once the McCanns crack, they will say that Murat (and a Russian bloke, an estranged wife and pool cleaner) made them do it…

It is very possible that when the PJ arrived they found inconsistencies in everyone’s story. They may have immediatly put together what happened and who the criminals were. They may have also been smart enough to know that this could be bigger than anything they could handle or were accustomed.
The PJ may have immediatly colaborated with British authorities and decided to move gradually with prudence. This drew immediate critizism, but still they remained poised and refrained from moving irrationally.
We have all seen high profile cases lost despite mounds of overwhelming evidence. That embarrasment has become the biggest fear of authorities today and the PJ may have had the foresight to refrain from acting arrogantly by not hastely revealing the theories and evidence that led to conclusions. Knowing full well that inexperience in such investigations is exposed and exploited they decided to do one thing; think first.
With the help of the British authorities this entire process was thought out, planned, and continues to be executed to perfection. They have been able to track and follow everyone involved, they have watched the media play out odd questions and provide clues, patiently build paranoia in the guilty. All of this while creating a mountain of evidence.
We may be witnessing the most brilliant partnering of police work ever created.
Just a though

In answer to Moderation above - no it could not have been the mystery pool cleaner who pointed the finger at Murat - the pointing was done by the Daily Mirror reporter who noted him on the scene and investigated his background.

in Diario de Noticias today:
Arguidos and return
opinion article by Paulo Pereira Cristovao, ex-inspector at Policia Judiciaria
The last fourty eight hours have significantly marked the Madeleine case. The parents have abandoned national territory with the justification that their younger children needed to return to their normal life in the United Kingdom. We think that, after 129 days in Portugal, they could have waited another four or five, in order to clarify unequivocally, when the Policia Judiciaria holds all the forensic results, that which they believe to be their total lack of responsibility in the disappearance of little Madeleine. The truth is that the status of arguidos that was imposed on them, is the normal consequence after the appearance of strong clues that could question their former statements as witnesses. It is also true, and they know it well, that whether in the United Kingdom or in Portugal, leaving three children on their own in an apartment that provided access like that one did, is a penally relevant illicit act.
It is not less true that, contrary to what relatives that are close to the couple have been referring over the last two days, the Policia Judiciaria has always treated them as victims, which means they were always seen as parents whom a daughter was taken away from. That was the way it was, and the way it was supposed to be. The presumption of innocence is applied to all those about whom no condemning sentence was spoken. Initially, there was no reason to make any more or less evaluative judgment about this couple. They were parents whom a daughter had been taken away from, and that is enough for the police. It just happens that investigations are always a string that one pulls without knowing how long it is, or what could be inside the ball. Police have reconstructed that night the best way it was possible to do. It was the unmaking of the string ball that naturally lead to the last fourty-eight hours, when, according to what the Penal Process Code instructs to do in such situations, the couple had to be granted the right not to say anything that might incriminate them; not to answer any questions and even to lie without any punishment for it. Given these facts, can anyone still seriously say that there is a will from the Police to falsely and intentionally incriminate Maddie’s parents? Wouldn’t it be more comfortable for the police to keep them as witnesses, a status that forces them to speak about everything and to respond without any possibility to omit or lie about any fact? The answers are obvious.
One doubt disturbs us. Being a fact that close relatives have widely defamed the Portuguese police, saying they planted evidence and comitted other actions that are difficult to describe, will the McCanns return to Portugal, if and when the Portuguese justice calls them for further clarification? And, if they eventually refuse to do so, will the British government place them in Portuguese territory? We will have to wait. From our side, we will certainly continue to pursue an unbiased, committed investigation, which will stay immune to northern winds that will certainly blow harder over the coming times.

Molly I will eat whatever. Within reason of course!
The best scenario is for Madeleine to be found (either way) and whoever did it locked up. Whoever that might be….
Holme… agree about the leaded windows… not on a modern house eh??
September 10th, 2007 at 8:07 am
Ann, this has been my personal theory all the way through based on nothing very much other than a feeling and I may be being completely unfair here. Murat’s GF still lives with her estranged husband who is a Pool Cleaner at MW.
That’s it really… I’m on the same tack as you, someone who had nearly a week to observe the routines.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:05 am
Moderation: Yes I’m with you on the Pool Cleaner. Just by applying algebraic logic to the case it’s clear there is an extra person involved here who has not been identified or interviewed - a “Mr or Ms X” . You have - seriously - made a very good point.
Meanwhile the greatest crime the McCann’s have committed is that slightly dodgy lead glazing on the porch of their Rothley house

I remain very suspicious of the McCanns’ Moderation - like you. not because of the couple themselves, but rather because of the massive inconsistencies - precisely because they hadn’t had time to get their stories straight IMHO.
I do not however believe that the entire party are complicit - that would be stretching credulity to way beyond it’s limits!
Time, and investigation however will hopefully tell us the truth - if it turns out that I am completely wrong, and that is backed up by evidence, then I will gladly eat humble pie. I’m sure that if the reverse turns out to be true then you will do likewise
In the meantime, here is a post from a first time poster on the Mirror Forums, which makes me ashamed to be British

Have I missed something here ? …the pool cleaner dunnit ? please enlighten me as I don’t recall reading that bit. My own personal opinion is that someone from the kitchens did it, a kitchen hand most likely, or a waiter, either of whom would know Maddie and her family and which apartment they were staying in and who had ample time to observe movements of the family.
September 10th, 2007 at 7:45 am
Morning Molly! I’ve tried, I’ve really tried but I still can’t accept it.
Not because of anything to do with the couple themselves but because of the logistics of the timelines. If the hoo-ha had happened the next day after they had had time to get themselves together and work it all out then yes…. but not the same night. I don’t think anyone is that clever unless it was just one person working alone.
madeleine was alive and well on CCTV at 6.30… missing at 10. Is that time for a group of people to sort out a story? eat dinner in public? participate in the hotel quiz night?
Even a raging psychopath would have had a problem.
I’m still with the abduction and the possible invovlement of the pool cleaner as I have been right from the start…
Who better to see everything but be invisible? Could it have been he who pointed the finger at Murat? the boyfriend of the estranged wife he still lived with?
That’s where my money still is……..
All IMO of course.
Maybe I am too involved in fiction !!
September 10th, 2007 at 7:44 am
What chance them going back if the PJ call them? I reckon none. They will be cocooned by the press and politicians in this country. They have made such a good job of leaking stories (thought they weren’t to talk about the case) that “nobody in their right mind” could think they were guilty and it’s all a fit up, so no way are we letting Johnny Foreigner get his oily hands on them.
So what have they managed?
£1 miilion, 132 days holiday, careers intact and best of all scott free after causing the death of their child (allegedly).
Why is it so wrong to believe that they did it? Just because they are parents isn’t enough.

MADELEINE McCANN DISAPPEARANCE: TRACES FOUND ON A SECOND APARTMENT AT OCEAN CLUB (13h33)
The Forensic Science Service, in Birmingham, is analysing several samples collected on another apartment of Ocean Club where, in the early morning of May 4, Portuguese sniffer dogs have signalled the presence of Madeleine McCann.
A new set of results will be send to Portugal in the next days. Those results are considered “very important”, as Police expects they can confirm or, at least give strong indications about the presence of Madeleine McCan on the second apartment at Ocean Club. Among the samples of this new set of results are also traces of biological material collected at apartment 5A and in the house the McCann rented, at Praia da Luz, when they left Ocean Club, several weeks after Madeleine disappeared.
The last set of results received by Portugues Police has a low degree of reliability – between 50 to 60 % - which is not enough to be admitted as evidence, on a trial. However, they were useful to help to give more consistency to other clues that Polícia Judiciária, in a close cooperation with British Police, has been collecting during the last four months. A surveillance operation, for example, has been set up one month ago and all movements of the McCann couple were followed closely by Police.
One of the first results to be ready was from blood specks found on the wall of the apartment from where Madeleine disappeared. Those results showed that the blood was not from Madeleine but from a man and the Forensic Science Service preliminary report referred a 72 % degree of reliability. Other blood sample, collected from the floor of the same apartment, matched partially the genetic profile of the missing child, but with a lower degree of reliability, a little bit over 50 %, result that does not allow to say that it belongs to Madeleine.
On Thursday night, Gerry and Kate McCann knew already that they would be named “arguidos” or formal suspects the following day, after the questioning at Portuguese CID headquarters in Portimão. Before that, during meetings between the PJ Inspectors that have been directing this investigation and the British Police liaison team, which received several reports related with the case from Police forces in the UK, all information was checked, once more. The final decision was consensual: the line of inquiry that admitted Madeleine McCann could be dead – which Police first revealed on August 11 - was getting much stronger and the next step should be to name the parents as formal suspects. . OK troops, I think the wall of silence will crack and we will see four doctors on trial for manslaughter very soon. Gerry has admitted to sedating his children every night. Madeline was heard crying every night by a neighbour every night - so they upped/changed the dosage if it ain’t working… To their horror, the new dosage caused a reaction with Maddy resulting in her death.
They (KM,GM, O’Brien and Tanner) put career before morality, and engineered a cock and bull story to cover up the accident. The Portuguese police let them get on with it but put them on 24/7 surveillance and listened in on phoncalls and intercepted emails.
With 1 million pounds in the bank from the Fund, and only 70k spent on flights etc, Kate and Gerry were considering quitting work and becoming full time envoys, fight for the rights of missing children. New Dianas.
They didn’t count on cadavar dogs sniffing the death scent on their clothes and in their hire car, and didn’t count the Poutuguese police being as attentive to detail as Colombo. If only Kate has brought the twins back from the apartment when she “discovered” the Maddy was gone and said: “She’s gone!” as opposed to leaving the twins unsecured and saying: “They’ve taken her!” Putting the blonde hair/middle class/professional bias aside, every parent smells a rat when they mentally put themselves in that position.
At least this case will serve to highlight how biased we are towards supporting efforts to find the missing if they are young, blonde and female. 1 million pounds has been raised for a fund that ain’t even a charity, whilst many missing men and non-blonde women have little or no media interest - and who’s families have very real heartache and little clousure.

(1358)- That was no strategic “master - plan” on Laura Bush’s part. She did NOT plan that on purpose. She couldn’t have given a rat’s arse if someone’s kid was missing - especially since it wasn’t even an American kid. No, she had a previous engagement scheduled for a while - in fact, most people in the states are refusing to believe the parents had any involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine. Laura Bush had no idea back in July that the Mccanns would ever be suspects - nor did the majority of folks. So, it was not planned it was ignored. You’re giving her way too much credit!
But, who did Gerry meet w/ instead?? And this is the evern funnier part..LOL! Alberto Gonzalez - the disgraced, lying under oath, Attorney General of the United States of America. That’s who. He who is also a fellow Texan and personal friend and attorney to Bush the 41st and Bush the 43rd.. At that time I had two questions I would have liked posed to Gerry:
1) What is the Attorney General of the U.S. who is on trial himself (at that time) going to do to help you find Madeleine? Or any missing and exploited child for that matter? He can’t even manage his own day to day tasks and staff, let alone borrow more problems.
2) Why didn’t you make a visit to John Walsh at AMW? Or Mark Klass - two father’s who’s young children were both abducted and later found murdered. Gerry couldn’t face these two men, both of whom have dedicated their lives to getting perpetrators off the streets and keeping kids safe after their own devastating losses. They are truly victims. And I don’t believe Gerry had the balls to look either of those two men in the eye. If Madeleiene is truly missing, they can do more to help find her then Laura Bush or Alberto Gonzalez. Neither of whom can do anything nor really care about another missing child.
That trip was an UNBELIEVABLE waste of time and resources!!!

(1355) Hi Ann.
I have heard a new rumour that Rupert Murdoch may ask them to move Gerry’s
blog over to a MySpace page. This way, he’ll get loads more traffic and can sell more ads on the site. The MCCANNS would most likely welcome the idea and so it’s a win/win for everyone. They haven’t decided on the musical theme for the web page yet, but Sarah McLachlan’s “I will remember you” is one of the ideas bouncing around out there. It seems to fit the state of mind that the Mccann’s must be living through today, especially this verse:
I’m so tired but I can’t sleep
Standin’ on the edge of something much too deep
It’s funny how we feel so much but we cannot say a word
We are screaming inside, but we can’t be heard
September 10th, 2007 at 5:38 am
I haven’t got a lot of time for “George Dubya” and Lady Laura Bush but I thought it a master-stroke on her behalf, that she was “otherwise engaged” with a prior engagement when Gerry went over to the States, ostensibly to meet her and discuss missing children and so on with her. He ended up looking a bit lost as far as I was concerned and “making do” with minor officials and meetings.
As far as that goes, if my own child were missing, wild horses wouldn’t get me away from where I believed him / her to be, and I wouldn’t be sleeping much either, let alone gadding about the world in private jets having high-priofile meetings with world leaders and prominent religious figures, not a good look….
