Madeleine McCann: Kate And Gerry’s Blood, Threat And Tears
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “KATE’S AGONY – CONFESS & YOU’RE OUT IN A YEAR.”
“Deal of blood, threat and tears.” Kate McCann is being interviewed by police. This is a “highly-charged confrontation, Portuguese officers citing forensic evidence told the GP she would receive a jail sentence of between two and three years if she signed a confession.”
Kate McCann is “horrified”. Says she: “How dare you?”
A source tells the paper: “The police were trying to get Kate to say she had amnesia or was in shock or had a breakdown. They said if she signed the confession she’d serve a year and that her husband would not be charged and could go home. It was effectively emotional blackmail.”
“SHOCKED” Gerry McCann has been named as a formal suspect.
THE SUN SAYS: “But the allegations made yesterday against Madeleine’s distraught mother Kate are astonishing and, in places, farcical. A suspicious page of the Bible left open? A call to a priest on the day of Maddie’s disappearance? Not exactly a smoking gun.”
Do all crimes involve a smoking gun?
The Sun concludes: “The Sun desperately wants justice for Maddie. But the greatest pity is that she is the one person who seems to have been forgotten in this mess of incompetence.”
And the Press continue to watch the parents.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: DEATH ON MUM’S BIBLE.”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER writes of “THE DAY THE JEERING STARTED”.
“Just two days ago Kate McCann, 39, was regarded almost universally as a victim who had suffered unimaginable agony. Families everywhere shared her heartbreak at losing her beautiful daughter. But it was clear yesterday, as the GP arrived to be formally named as a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance, that much of that sympathy has now gone.”
The crowd outside the police station – 400-strong – goes into a “frenzy” when Kate McCann arrives. “There were whistles, then jeers and boos before some in the crowd began to shout insults. ‘Whore… daughter of a whore,’ some yelled in Portuguese.”
The Express translates.
A local man says: “They will find this more and more because in Portugal harming a child is the worst thing…The Portuguese people took them to their hearts and now we feel cheated. It will not be nice in Portugal for them now.”
Kate is “cool and collected”.
DAILY MAIL front page: “THE ACCUSED. Portuguese police’s staggering grilling of Madeleine mother.
• Why was her blood in your car?
• Did you drug her that night?
• Confess and get just two years.”
DAILY STAR front page: “YOU KILLED MADDIE.”
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE SENSATION. We have found her blood in the boot of your hire car.. DID YOU KILL HER BY ACCIDENT?” This is “what police asked Kate McCann during 16-hour grilling”.
THE GUARDIAN front page: “Mother, victim…suspect: police target Kate McCann.”
THE TELEGRAPH: “Kate and Gerry McCann named as suspects,” says the headline.
“Mr McCann stared straight ahead as his suspect status was announced and refused to answer questions from awaiting journalists. A crowd which had been attending a concert in the town square earlier listened to the announcement and several people gasped audibly.”
In “Villagers back Madeleine McCann’s parents”, the paper journeys to Rothey, Leicestershire, the McCanns’ home town. Michelle Canilleri, who lives in Rothley, shares with the world: “I can’t believe it. This is such a shock. They have got the wrong people. No way in the world would either Kate or Gerry harm any of their children.”
THE INDEPENDENT front page: “FROM ANGUISHED PARENT, TO GRIEVING MOTHER, TO SUSPECT.”
“Shortly before 11am, Mrs McCann’s spokeswoman, Justine McGuinness, revealed that the 39-year-old GP was being made an arguida – official suspect – in the case. And then she uttered the six short words which will be inconceivable to some who have followed this case and a confirmation of long-held suspicions to others. ‘Kate fears she will be charged,’ Ms McGuinness said.”

265 - Thank You Elizabeth - nice name, too it’s a personal favorite of mine - me Mum’s name and me younger sister share it too
So they could lose their medical licenses.
Could life possibly get any worse for these people??!! All for one lousy vacation!!
Talk about having the worst luck imaginalble.
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when they were online planning this trip in the beginning - a year ago perhaps?? - and getting all excited about it, thinking of the endless possibilities for sun and fun for two adults. MW Resorts costs are pretty cheap - very reasonable - considerign it’s a pay one price all inclusive deal - with meals included. Kind of Club Med for the family. I think a weekly rate is around $3,500 for a family of 4 duing peak season.
But the turn of events, make that mere $3,500.00 price tag a spit in the bucket compared to the losses accumulating from this trip. Sort of makes Martha Stewart’s stupidity from her greedy little insider trading scandal look small in the big scheme of things. Sure she lost hundreds of millions in the valuation of her stock portofolio, but she’ll recover those losses and she enjoyed her year in jail making new friendships that she was in dire need of.
But the Mccans story is far and beyond those monentary losses - two Medical Careers potentially down the drain and the loss of a child - choking back tears when I write this - doesn’t even compare to Martha’s troubles. Teh only comparison that can be made is the narcissim factors ate teh same. The arrogance of being immune from the same accountabiliites as teh rest of teh worlld must adhere to. That’s why I say, doesn’t matter who you inow in the end. If you commit a serious crime and the EVIDENCE is there. You’re going to do your time in jail. Now, if there’s “no body, (there there is allegedly) no crime”
I pray this won’t be the theme here. For Madeliene’s sake. And for her siblings because they too deserve the truth and justice.

I have known the McCanns for many years. They are rude people and have shouted at lots of children in our street, including a disabled younsgter who asked for a loan of 50p to buy a cone.
I ask you. With people like that in this country, what chance do Wigan stand of staying up for another season?
September 8th, 2007 at 3:58 pm
Moderator: I think you are the one being rude, or do you generally call people who write what they believe to be the truth “ignoramuses”? I notice Rosemary, who my posting was addressed to, didn’t take offence so why are you jumping about on her behalf? Apart from which - just take a look around this site if you want to read some really ignorant remarks.

There would be a criminal trial in Portugal as they have jurisdiction.
No idea where the civil trial comes from who would be the other party suing the McCanns?
The won’t be a trial in the UK because no crime has been committed here. However Social Services can get involved on the basis that the twins may be at risk. If the McCanns are proven to have druged the children when they were perfectly healthy the can be struck off as doctors.
September 8th, 2007 at 3:55 pm
why can’t they just stay in Portugal, I think it is a fair exchange.
20,000 portugese poultry workers for 2 child killers

(272) cont’d. It is amusing when it is said by my sister-in-law to my husband (her brother).
I have also heard such quaint expressions as “his mother was a very holy woman but he’s an h— p—”.
September 8th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
(268) Definitely not.
September 8th, 2007 at 3:46 pm
Bulldump (266): Más o menos (more or less). Most of the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsular must have had that shouted at them on some occasion. It’s “son (or, in this case, daughter) of a bitch”.
September 8th, 2007 at 3:46 pm
No.
September 8th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
(260) This text is very useful. In Spain too, the charges are brought by the Court, not the police. The Public Prosecutor asks for a certain verdict and sentence, as do any Private Prosecutors there may be and also, of course, the Defence. The Judge who hears the case then decides. It is not exactly the same but similar.

266 - Land Ho!!
September 8th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
263 - I’m not a lawyer. So I was questioning what the due procees would be.
I don’t know, there’s creative accounting….can’t their also be “creative laywering” and have them moved back to England for a trial?
Shoot - we’re not even started on the Bastille Day festivities a la Portuguese style, and already talkin’ trial and jury shop??!
A cart before a horse if ever I saw one!

Why? If your daughter has truly been abducted and you don’t want to leave your 2 remaining children then you use the phone rather than leaving the flat. I don’t see what’s wrong with suggesting that.
September 8th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
chloe: so you are saying the claims that her mother is a whore cannot be trusted?
September 8th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
You’re right, citizenship has nothing to do with it. There would be no grounds for trying them in Britain for a crime that occurred in Portugal.
Some other choice things could happen for them in Britain, though, if they are found guilty in Portugal - like maybe getting their medical licences revoked. Remember a little thing called the Hyppocratic Oath? (”First, Do no harm.”)
September 8th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Bulldump, “Son/Daughter of a whore” is a common insult in Portuguese”. It is in Spanish too. When soccer players get sent off for punching someone, they often justify themselves by saying that the other player “referred to my mother”!
September 8th, 2007 at 3:32 pm
Can’t see why they would be tried in Britain for something that happened in Portugal. The jurisdictions are separate. Don’t know if they might, conceivably, be allowed to serve their Portuguese sentences in a British prison but I think this would depend on the British authorities requesting it and the Portuguese courts granting it.

Honey you are a complete idiot

But you would ring gerry to get him to come back to the flat so you could stay with the twins. Surely.
September 8th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Johnusa, they have a much different legal system.
One, they’re still gathering evidence, hoping for a break. They interviewed the parents a day apart, the friends next.
They have “evidence”, but want “more” evidence, particularly without a body. What prosecutor wouldn’t?
A Portuguese lawyer who seemed very knowledgeable explained in detail some of the procedures.
You’ve asked great questions. Why not read what he wrote and then come back?
September 8th, 2007 at 3:24 pm
in the daily express it was reported that people were shouting “daughter of a whore” when kate arrived.
if this is the case do the mccanns intend suing these people, or are they only suing papers that have printed the truth
September 8th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
251 Why not - makes it a tad more exciting
September 8th, 2007 at 3:21 pm
go through = go to
September 8th, 2007 at 3:21 pm
I’m not a lawyer. But Murat may have a case of action for a trial if he’s innocent and was knowingly framed or allowed to be a suspect despite his innocence.
Madeileine’s estate would have an action… is there anything in British law that would allow a family member or the courts to act in her interests to sue the McCann’s?
I’m not sure what money they would have or who it would go through. The assets would probably have to come from the find Maddy fund, which would be fair enough. However, I have no knowledge of British law in this regards and am not really interested in it.
Just want the killer(s) caught, tried, and convicted AND the parents tried for neglect.
September 8th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
If the Portuguese police have evidence linking the McCanns to their daughter’s death, why don’t they charge and arrest the McCanns right away? Why wait? If they have such irrefutable evidence linking Kate, why would they offer her a “deal” of maybe 2 yrs? The jury is still out in this case, so I wouldn’t be so quick to convict the McCanns. I’m more prone to disbelieving the Portuguese police than the McCanns.
September 8th, 2007 at 3:17 pm
246 - Because of their Citizenship. I was thinking their COULD be 2 trials.
Ciivil and criminal?
