Madeleine McCann: Kate And Gerry’s Blood, Threat And Tears
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “KATE’S AGONY – CONFESS & YOU’RE OUT IN A YEAR.”
“Deal of blood, threat and tears.” Kate McCann is being interviewed by police. This is a “highly-charged confrontation, Portuguese officers citing forensic evidence told the GP she would receive a jail sentence of between two and three years if she signed a confession.”
Kate McCann is “horrified”. Says she: “How dare you?”
A source tells the paper: “The police were trying to get Kate to say she had amnesia or was in shock or had a breakdown. They said if she signed the confession she’d serve a year and that her husband would not be charged and could go home. It was effectively emotional blackmail.”
“SHOCKED” Gerry McCann has been named as a formal suspect.
THE SUN SAYS: “But the allegations made yesterday against Madeleine’s distraught mother Kate are astonishing and, in places, farcical. A suspicious page of the Bible left open? A call to a priest on the day of Maddie’s disappearance? Not exactly a smoking gun.”
Do all crimes involve a smoking gun?
The Sun concludes: “The Sun desperately wants justice for Maddie. But the greatest pity is that she is the one person who seems to have been forgotten in this mess of incompetence.”
And the Press continue to watch the parents.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: DEATH ON MUM’S BIBLE.”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER writes of “THE DAY THE JEERING STARTED”.
“Just two days ago Kate McCann, 39, was regarded almost universally as a victim who had suffered unimaginable agony. Families everywhere shared her heartbreak at losing her beautiful daughter. But it was clear yesterday, as the GP arrived to be formally named as a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance, that much of that sympathy has now gone.”
The crowd outside the police station – 400-strong – goes into a “frenzy” when Kate McCann arrives. “There were whistles, then jeers and boos before some in the crowd began to shout insults. ‘Whore… daughter of a whore,’ some yelled in Portuguese.”
The Express translates.
A local man says: “They will find this more and more because in Portugal harming a child is the worst thing…The Portuguese people took them to their hearts and now we feel cheated. It will not be nice in Portugal for them now.”
Kate is “cool and collected”.
DAILY MAIL front page: “THE ACCUSED. Portuguese police’s staggering grilling of Madeleine mother.
• Why was her blood in your car?
• Did you drug her that night?
• Confess and get just two years.”
DAILY STAR front page: “YOU KILLED MADDIE.”
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE SENSATION. We have found her blood in the boot of your hire car.. DID YOU KILL HER BY ACCIDENT?” This is “what police asked Kate McCann during 16-hour grilling”.
THE GUARDIAN front page: “Mother, victim…suspect: police target Kate McCann.”
THE TELEGRAPH: “Kate and Gerry McCann named as suspects,” says the headline.
“Mr McCann stared straight ahead as his suspect status was announced and refused to answer questions from awaiting journalists. A crowd which had been attending a concert in the town square earlier listened to the announcement and several people gasped audibly.”
In “Villagers back Madeleine McCann’s parents”, the paper journeys to Rothey, Leicestershire, the McCanns’ home town. Michelle Canilleri, who lives in Rothley, shares with the world: “I can’t believe it. This is such a shock. They have got the wrong people. No way in the world would either Kate or Gerry harm any of their children.”
THE INDEPENDENT front page: “FROM ANGUISHED PARENT, TO GRIEVING MOTHER, TO SUSPECT.”
“Shortly before 11am, Mrs McCann’s spokeswoman, Justine McGuinness, revealed that the 39-year-old GP was being made an arguida – official suspect – in the case. And then she uttered the six short words which will be inconceivable to some who have followed this case and a confirmation of long-held suspicions to others. ‘Kate fears she will be charged,’ Ms McGuinness said.”

Arthur––I’ve checked, mate––Gavin McCann of Sunderland is no relation of Harry and Clare McCann, the tragic parents of little Kylie McCann. It’s true that he has been to Portugal a few times, but the local police ruled him out of their enquiries after the Match of the Day confirmed that he’d actually been seen in a pub in Newcastle on the evening in question. I agree that it’s all a bit fishy and Micky McCann’s link to Kirsty Stark at the BBC just confirms my suspicion that Britain is being run by a Scotch mafia since Joe Brown became prime minister. Time we got out of Europe with all its silly rules, red tape and police who who’ve never had to deal with indiscriminate shootings on the streets.
BTW––any other famous McCanns anyone? How about Fergus McCann who bought over Celtic football club? Or Neil McCann, who used to play for Rangers (just to show I’m not a bogart); or Lori McCann the beautiful New York soprano (just to show I’m not a chav)

The Oliver James psychologist had a good piece in the Times about the possible state of mind of the parents (whose account of the abduction I’ve always believed until now).
I feel this case will have the worst possible outcome. Madeleine must be dead and the parents in a state of shock denial. I feel very sorry for everyone involved.

Christoph my friend, we can all see what you are saying. That’s the problem.

The people whose respect I care about see what I’m saying.

One thing I’ll say is you are categorically right about that. Every Portuguese lawyer has said there is no way they would — or could — offer this deal under their legal system.
But this info came from the family, and nowhere else. It’s one of a lot of pieces of bull___ coming from their side of things.
So don’t blame the Portuguese police for this leak. Blame the McCann’s — in this case, the extended family.
And possibly Kate and/or Gerry if that’s what they said to them.

Christov: word of advice, be careful what you write. Clever people can add 2+2.

Arthur, you are a uniter, not a divider.

There’s one thing that worries me, how many of take The Sun or Daily Mirror as reliable sources? cause for me those kind of news are pretty scary and sensasionalist.
PJ HAS DENIED they did ask her to confess in order of getting two years of prision.
Another subject lets separate this case from the people’s choise in coming to Algarve to spend their holidays ( no I don’t own any hotel there, it’s just unfair, one thing has absolutly nothing to do with another).
PJ knows how to work, they just don’t come out to tell every tiny detail of their investigations, so people of course tend to call them as incompetents etc…only because they called Maddie’s parents as ’suspects’.
Of course we still are waiting for better explanations but, I can’t see why PJ is not working well and doing the best for a conclusive answer to this case.
Do not understimate others if you don’t know them.
And not forget this, if Kate was named as suspect was due to the fact that she denied to answer some simple questions, like if she gave sedatives for the kids at that night, or why the twins didn’t wake up during the period of time the police was in the bedroom etc…so when you refuse to answer during the interrogation, you are a suspect. That’s how it is at least here in Portugal.

Think arthur is two nuts short of a fruit loaf!

gecko, I am sure we are different. Yet… I would say that each of my posts is grounded in morality. So if we’re different, that’s unfortunate. But for you, not I.
September 9th, 2007 at 12:00 am
Well, I wouldn’t say they are “allowed” to leak… but I think they do, judiciously, when it serves them.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:59 pm
Who the heck is Sarah and Megan Mccann???
September 8th, 2007 at 11:59 pm
Christov; having read ALL your posts it was very easy to form an opinion about you, your background, your foreground and your lack of ground. Think on lad…
September 8th, 2007 at 11:58 pm
Of course the Mccann family is going to defend them and say things like ” they would never do such thing..they are great parents..” BLAH BLAH BLAH
I’m sure more than half the people that commit crimes are “great people”..
before they do what they do……
September 8th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
Wot u on, Art?
September 8th, 2007 at 11:55 pm
Gee, Arthur. I believe everyone should be able to contribute, but man. Dude. Haldol.
Seriously. See a doc. I say that with love.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:52 pm
Thank you, Elizabeth. Thank you for bringing sanity and decency to this debate again.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:52 pm
Oh you are German?
My sincere apologies for spelling your name wrong, that was rude.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:51 pm
I hate to disagree with you, Bruce, but what I want to know is how can Sarah McCann claim to be a Catholic, have that moving lunch with Pope Dominic and then be hanging about a Protestant church in Portugal handing out leaflets for tupperware evenings? Especially a church so clearly associated with both the Russian mafia AND the Madrid bombings. And is it also true that Billy McCann flew to the Scotland-Lithuania game today usingh funds from the Find Sally Campaign just hours after it was announced that he had been formally charged by the Portugese police for being a tourist? I ask you. If little Megan McCann ever does reappear (like that Austrian girl who had been living for 20 years in the Salzburg branch of Pizza Hut where her parents actually dined every Friday), people will rightly want to know if her holier than thou Mum and Dad really did fill her up with Irn Bru and crisps every night before they went out on the ran dan with their crackhead mates in Leicester. Until we get the guns off our streets, Wigan can only look forward to further mediocrity.

mary, cadaver dogs are relatively recent, Eddie is only 4 years old, they have had SAR dogs for quite a while though. ButHolly andJessica were found two weeks later, and their clothing was found in Huntley’s house/car, as far as I recall.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:51 pm
The police probably did do some screwing up at the beginning, but this was undoubtedly because they are not used to dealing with this sort of crime. Praia de Luz is one of those place where there is something like one violent crime every ten years (which, when you think of it, is kind of TO THEIR CREDIT, at least in part. If London, New York, Paris police have such crack investigative teams its largely because they have plenty of nasty opportunities to hone their skills.)
The Portugese police, also to their credit, were not too proud to accept investigative and technological help from the British police. They DO want to solve this crime and get justice for this child.
As I have said before, they did not pounce on Madeleine’s parents - they were almost TOO nice with them through much of the investigation. JonBenet’s Ramseys parents were pounced on from the get-go, Madeleine’s parents have been practically coddled, even though they were the last ones to see the child. The police seems to have held off until the last possible moment - when the Mccanns were talking about leaving Portugal in a huff - to accuse the parents.
The jury is still out - as we say in my country - but it may turn out that the supposedly “bumbling” Portugese police have done a “Columbo” on the McCanns. You remember the moment in every “Columbo” episode when the rumbled and semi-incoherent detective scratched his head, said, “Oh, just one more thing …” and slapped the cuffs on the person? Well, that can happen in real life - when you underestimate your adversary. Especially with the PJ, who are not allowed to communicate (except through leaks) what they know.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:50 pm
I’ve been hearing the family point of view on the news all day, but it should be discounted, as only those who were there on the night can say what happened.
Everyone who thinks this is a stitch-up by the Portuguese police, remember, key forensic evidence was tested by the British lab.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:50 pm
Good point Barry, although they have still been watched 24/7, so might be difficult to trash the evidence.
Wonder if the dogs will have a translater when they give their evidence in court!!
September 8th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
Well those creepy Christians can’t be trusted. So let’s fry the McCann’s.
Of course, I’m not a Christian, but don’t let the fact get in the way of a baseless slur. Which, in this case, as someone who admires many Christians, hates abortion, despises murder, and dislikes you… I will indeed take as a great compliment.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
Christophe is French I believe, but mine is simply the name “Christopher” in German: Christoph
September 8th, 2007 at 11:45 pm
Moderation: I agree with you that Christoph is truly weird, and christian and likes bush…say no more
I also think HE enjoys this all rather too much…in a creepy sort of way.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:43 pm
I dont remember hearing about cadaver dogs that can trail death scents in the absence of actual remains in any previous case. Were they used in the Soham case to check out Huntleys car or house? As for the body, after months in the sea(if that is the case) I cant imagine there would be much left in terms of forensic evidence.Even if this comes to nothing and they are allowed to come home surely people will always point the finger-everyone knows who they are.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
although pure speculation on my part, perhaps they rented the car to clear out evidence of a dead body once they found out about the cadaver dogs.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:41 pm
Yeh, I know, starnge is starnge too…
September 8th, 2007 at 11:40 pm
Yeh, of course, Christoph (starnge spelling, half French, half something else?). But the point was that for homicide there are other jurisdictions TOO (as with the McCann case).
