Madeleine McCann: Kate And Gerry’s Blood, Threat And Tears
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “KATE’S AGONY – CONFESS & YOU’RE OUT IN A YEAR.”
“Deal of blood, threat and tears.” Kate McCann is being interviewed by police. This is a “highly-charged confrontation, Portuguese officers citing forensic evidence told the GP she would receive a jail sentence of between two and three years if she signed a confession.”
Kate McCann is “horrified”. Says she: “How dare you?”
A source tells the paper: “The police were trying to get Kate to say she had amnesia or was in shock or had a breakdown. They said if she signed the confession she’d serve a year and that her husband would not be charged and could go home. It was effectively emotional blackmail.”
“SHOCKED” Gerry McCann has been named as a formal suspect.
THE SUN SAYS: “But the allegations made yesterday against Madeleine’s distraught mother Kate are astonishing and, in places, farcical. A suspicious page of the Bible left open? A call to a priest on the day of Maddie’s disappearance? Not exactly a smoking gun.”
Do all crimes involve a smoking gun?
The Sun concludes: “The Sun desperately wants justice for Maddie. But the greatest pity is that she is the one person who seems to have been forgotten in this mess of incompetence.”
And the Press continue to watch the parents.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: DEATH ON MUM’S BIBLE.”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER writes of “THE DAY THE JEERING STARTED”.
“Just two days ago Kate McCann, 39, was regarded almost universally as a victim who had suffered unimaginable agony. Families everywhere shared her heartbreak at losing her beautiful daughter. But it was clear yesterday, as the GP arrived to be formally named as a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance, that much of that sympathy has now gone.”
The crowd outside the police station – 400-strong – goes into a “frenzy” when Kate McCann arrives. “There were whistles, then jeers and boos before some in the crowd began to shout insults. ‘Whore… daughter of a whore,’ some yelled in Portuguese.”
The Express translates.
A local man says: “They will find this more and more because in Portugal harming a child is the worst thing…The Portuguese people took them to their hearts and now we feel cheated. It will not be nice in Portugal for them now.”
Kate is “cool and collected”.
DAILY MAIL front page: “THE ACCUSED. Portuguese police’s staggering grilling of Madeleine mother.
• Why was her blood in your car?
• Did you drug her that night?
• Confess and get just two years.”
DAILY STAR front page: “YOU KILLED MADDIE.”
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE SENSATION. We have found her blood in the boot of your hire car.. DID YOU KILL HER BY ACCIDENT?” This is “what police asked Kate McCann during 16-hour grilling”.
THE GUARDIAN front page: “Mother, victim…suspect: police target Kate McCann.”
THE TELEGRAPH: “Kate and Gerry McCann named as suspects,” says the headline.
“Mr McCann stared straight ahead as his suspect status was announced and refused to answer questions from awaiting journalists. A crowd which had been attending a concert in the town square earlier listened to the announcement and several people gasped audibly.”
In “Villagers back Madeleine McCann’s parents”, the paper journeys to Rothey, Leicestershire, the McCanns’ home town. Michelle Canilleri, who lives in Rothley, shares with the world: “I can’t believe it. This is such a shock. They have got the wrong people. No way in the world would either Kate or Gerry harm any of their children.”
THE INDEPENDENT front page: “FROM ANGUISHED PARENT, TO GRIEVING MOTHER, TO SUSPECT.”
“Shortly before 11am, Mrs McCann’s spokeswoman, Justine McGuinness, revealed that the 39-year-old GP was being made an arguida – official suspect – in the case. And then she uttered the six short words which will be inconceivable to some who have followed this case and a confirmation of long-held suspicions to others. ‘Kate fears she will be charged,’ Ms McGuinness said.”
THE TIMES front page: A picture of the McCanns meeting the Pope.

645, Christoph, Well I can see now why they might not want Brian rooting around too much.
So far his “visons” have been a complete waste of time, and I think the massage board was hit by hoaxers. The explanation for not using a clairvoyant was that it conflicted with their faith.
Brian claims to do it all for nothing and is trying to set up a fund to pay for his trip (where did he get that idea?!)

I am disappointed.
I think the police in Portugal are convinced about the case, but they know that they just don’t have enough evidence. (For instance, no body).
The “interviews” with Gerry and Kate before they left Portugal were a desperate attempt on behalf of the police to get the parents to confess. The police, despite all their hard work, have failed and now this case will never be solved.

Yes, and his middle name is pinocchio.
I don’t care what he says is true or not - but people in brick houses should not be throwing stones. He should not be commenting on aliases. This guy wrote the book on it.
None of that matters - I am not into outting people. I just think he’s not one to comment on “sockpuppets” to use his antiquated terminology.
I’m off to to do some stuff and then church…..and then to the U.S. Open Men’s Finals this afternoon!! We got tickets late yesterday from a friend who couldn’t go at the last minute. I’m psyched!!!
gotta run - bye now!
September 9th, 2007 at 11:45 am
Without getting in personals, many years ago something very traumatic happened to me. A friend said ‘I can’t believe how strong you are’. It was ages afterwards when I realised she meant ‘hard / emtionless / uncaring’. I batted not an eyelid, even in private for around three years and then went a bit loopy for a while. Well, mad as a hatter actually!!
I personally don’t place any more importance on their lack of emotion than I do on Murats ‘need to please’.
We’re all human and all react differently.
Witness the weeping and wailing that sometimes goes on in press conferences and then suddenly the weeper is the one.

Plane due to touch down at 12.20 GMT.
I am just so bewildered by all this! Surely at the very least the Court would have insisted on them staying in Portugal if they are suspects?
Apparently Arguido is one step down from our own being ‘on bail pending enquiries’.
Yes, Brick House (!!), he did say GF in OZ.

823, Hello Pat, glad to see you dropped in, I’ve enjoyed your well-considered observations.
This is very confusing, last night Sky news reporter said the McCanns were returning after hearing that Madeleine was likely dead, and today their spokesman is speaking of continuing the campaign to find her???
This is the first time I’ve posted a link from the News of the World, but i once had a good friend who worked for them, so it can’t be that bad!
“Portuguese police are relying heavily on a Cracker-style profiler who has been studying the McCanns’ behaviour. The profiler has reportedly claimed that he suspects that the couple, from Rothley, Leics, could be “distracting” themselves from the horror of what they might have done by getting involved in the massive media campaign.
Doubts have also been cast over the lack of emotion and the controlled composure of the couple since their daughter disappeared.
The profiler has told cops that this matches that of a couple who are united and focused in a bid to cover up a tragedy.”
http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/0909_maddie2.shtml
Could the profiler be the psychiatrist Oliver James, I wonder, who wrote his thoughts in The Times yesterday (Comment Section, UK Edition)? Posted the link last night.

835 - do you have any news reports that you can send me on the Mccanns returning home? I have not seen those yet. Can you send me a link?
Thanks…

837 - it’s the pot calling the kettle black here. How many aliases you have my dear? Geckgo100, is just one of them. I could go on and on.
You told Bulldump the girl friend was in Austrailia last nite…LOL! I thought the Concorde stopped flying? She got to Canada awfully quickly.
We don’t discuss Slavery on this forum. You and Miguel were debating it. That discussion is over a while ago.
Talk about throwing a wrench into it all…….
Moderation, you’re right on with your assessments.

836 - Your on the wrong forum Squiqqles. We only discuss Madeleine Mccann and the events of May 3rd here. Sorry, Charlie!
but I can speak a few words in Danish….

Julie’s point about sockpuppetry is well taken. Maintaining a consistent identity is a better way to debate. Not doing so may be innocent, but may also be deceptive even unintentionally.
It gives you an UNFAIR advantage in a debate because it creates the impression more people support your position than do.
And as far as your history of slavery goes, you are way wrong. Lincoln was great. I love what he did.
But the U.S. didn’t “end slavery in the world”. The British did more about that than the states.
The states were practicing slavery long after the British navy were fighting against it, due to laws Wilberforce championed.
This is not to diminish the resolve and great sacrifice of the union soldiers and what they did. But they didn’t “end slavery around the world”.
Night, all! Girlfriend’s done reading Moderation’s embarrassing debate performance (once again). Not must really go and sexistly enjoy her company.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:08 am
Re. Slavery. You also have to mention the Denmark, and the philosophes and the French Revolution before Napoleon screwed it up and so on.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:06 am
Brick House…. I had also thought this was a forum to discuss a missing child but when I checked the posts this morning I felt that it had been taken over by aliens. Or Saturday night drunks of course!! Weird…..
So back to Madeleine. The McCanns are on their way home with the agreement of the police and the authorities. (Of course, or their passoprts would have been removed) Apparently the flights have been booked for two weeks?
Speculation in Praia is that they couldn’t let them leave without asking certain questions and these questions could not be asked without Arguido status. Well, they could have asked them but the McCanns didn’t have to answer them. As Arguidos they did.
I’m still watching for the other hand!! There is something going on behind the scenes that none of us know about.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:04 am
832 - LOL!!
September 9th, 2007 at 11:01 am
826 - Let me clear up one fact here. My point of view does not change. My name changes yes, but my point of view does not. I am extremely consistent whether you see it or believe it or not. That’s the truth.
I couldn’t do it any other way. Too confusing and too hard to remember. My views and my theories and my allegiances do not change. Never.
“A lie is much harder to recall than the truth” - one of my favorite sayings I recently heard.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:00 am
830 - no problem, I think it was a hot-headed latino type that brought it up in the first place. Or was it the humourless Canadian?
Yours, a tight-arsed Brit.
September 9th, 2007 at 10:58 am
826 - Great, then we can be civilized human beings to one another?
That would be wonderful…..we can still ignore each other. But let’s just be civilized about it and no name calling and character assasinations.
As I said, I’m a liberal and I believe in making peace, not war
September 9th, 2007 at 10:55 am
824 - not hollywood - but history.
How the hell did we ever get on this subject? It was Christoph who dragged us into this with some guy named Miguel. Both of whom are gone now.
We are here to debate only Madeleine’s story. Not any of the other subjects - like slavery, abortion and the other controversial topics that some of us got dumped on with today.
Truce - I am throwing in the towel.
Make peace, not war.
PS - I am an Anglo-phile. So your analysis is wrong. Just the subject we were discussing - which is offlimits now - we beg to differ on. OK?
September 9th, 2007 at 10:53 am
Hi Pat. Good to see you back with us long standing posters!
September 9th, 2007 at 10:52 am
is madeleine back in the UK, and thats why G&K are coming home? Will she be holding the namecard at the airport say mummy/daddy?
September 9th, 2007 at 10:52 am
Don’t expect any new developments today so I’m having a Mccann free day for the rest of today and watching the rugby. See you tomorrow
September 9th, 2007 at 10:51 am
822 - Let me leave you with just ONE little thought …. at least in all the time I’ve been posting I have never felt the need to change the name that I use, in order to change my point of view. I stick to my point of view, and if you and 90 % of the other posters on this forum don’t like me for it well then that’s your perogative to do so.
I will just also set the record VERY VERY straight on one thing. When I have felt the need to attack someone, it is because I have been attacked by that person first, OR that poster has posted an extremely degrading remark against someone else on the forum. If you don’t believe this, then I would welcome you, and any of the others who think I’m such an evil little B, to go and check this out for yourselves.!
And as for you being American, so what? I DO NOT hate people from other countries in the slightest. I may have a totally different insight into life from you but it does not mean to say that because you’re American, British, Polish or whatever that I hate you for it!
September 9th, 2007 at 10:51 am
820 - You are incorrect. And if I had my Father sitting behind this keyboard, he’d tear your facts to shreds. I am not the history buff or the expert in U.S and World politics - he is - so I won’t debate it any further.. But the one thing that he has said over and over again, as have MANY others from various backgrounds - is that the British are wholly responsible for the creation of Slavery. First and foremost. In the world.
And the Americans have led the world in the abolition of slavery. Yes, in the U.S first and foremost. We didn’t keep slaves in any other country other than the U.S. and as I said, we had to undue the damage that the British in establishing slavery in the U.S. in the first place.
September 9th, 2007 at 10:50 am
The Brits didn’t invent slavery..it has been in existance as long as records have been kept.
I sympathise with your anti-Brit/Pro-US view on history, as I was taught an American curriculam between the ages of 7 and 11, up until 1976, and I remember how jingoistic you lot can be.
Hollywood also plays a part in this. See how many English villains have been cast, and how history gets re-written to give the US a central role in the resolution of every conflict.
I believe it is the responsibility of every thinking person to rise above the hype surrounding their nationality, and see things for what they really are.

Hi, The postings are really long with the recent news. After reading most of them it is time to pass out for a while.
I just want to say I notice many of the unusal posters missing.
Thinking back about chatting with all of you in the beginning never considering at the time what has become recent news. For some the missing of Madeleine has been a life changing event. For anyone paying attention this case has been disturbing.
Some aspect of the situation motivated me to sign of computers for good. LOL quite seriously, YES. Maybe one more day of reading the forum to let all of this sink in before getting back to basics. I’ll sign out Monday. Maybe it is best to communicate by mental telepathy after all?
After reading all of the postings I am curious how many will end up with some kind of Madeleine syndrome. Wow.
I am convinced Rosemary has the stamina to see it through, such a good thing someone does. YES.
September 9th, 2007 at 10:44 am
815 - You have attacked me many times in the past. Let’s leave it at that.
No, let’s leave it at this.
“If you have nothing nice to say about anyone, then don’t say anything”.
That’s called Diplomacy 101.
So I won’t say a word about you - won’t even mention your name or that you even exist here. And you do the same. Oh, in case you’re wondering, Yes, I am American. And damn proud to acknowledge it too

(Ball and chain is reading these comments, hence, must tarry.)
And Julie, how’s it goin’?
Quotes, Moderation, to prove your point.
I haven’t asked you to stop debating; I’ve asked you to raise your game to make it worthwhile.
