Madeleine McCann: Suspects Kate And Gerry And The Flight Of Fancy
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “EXCLUSIVE – ‘We’re being set up. I’ve had enough. Let’s go home.’” This is the “ANGER OF MADDIE DAD.”
Gerry and Kate McCann, “the doctors”, are back in their home town of Rothley, Leicestershire.
Pages 4, 5, 6 & 7: A statement from Gerry McCann in which he thanks one and all for the support and adds: “But we would like to ask for our privacy to be respected now that we have returned home.”
But their private grief is public spectacle. Can they be left alone with their daughter still missing and their campaign to find her in progress?
“YOU’LL LOSE THE TWINS.” Portuguese police are said to have told Kate McCann she should confess or face losing her two children.
“FACT OR FIT-UP?” The Sun considers the claims and gives each an “EXPLANATION.”
THE SUN SAYS: “McCanns’ hell”. The McCann’s “torment gets more horrendous by the day.” Where is the “kidnapper who might still have the four-year-old child in his clutches?”
THE TIMES front page: “McCanns fly home to fights their case.”
Mr McCann says the police’s focus on them is “deeply disturbing”.
Portuguese newspapers claim the McCanns failed to answer 40 questions put to them during interviews last week. “They apparently feared that they could wrongly implicate themselves if he [sic] did so.”
Pages 6 & 7: “Puzzles and mysteries at the very heart of the investigation.”
The paper tries to answer some of these questions. It tells us: “Although a small child could be killed quickly it would take time to hide the body so that it was not discovered in the biggest search in Portuguese history.”
The paper’s David Brown does not reveal how he researched this. He just knows.
The window to the McCanns apartment might have been opened from the inside. Brown of the Wapping Yard concludes: “Or was the window opened to make it appear as if an intruder had used it to enter the bedroom?”
Hmmm. What say you Mr Brown?
DAILY MAIL front page: “Police are determined to charge McCanns with killing Madeleine. HOME…FOR HOW LONG?”
Mr McCann is said to have told a friends: “We are being completely stitched up by the Portuguese police. We are completely f*****. We should have seen this coming weeks ago and gone back to Britain.”
Pages 2 and 3: “Madeleine’s parents consult Pinochet’s lawyer.” The McCanns have consulted with Michael Caplan QC, the British lawyer who represented Chilean dictator General Pinochet, who stood accused to torture and human rights abuses. Interesting?
Pages 4 & 5: “Questions the police must answer.”
The paper wonders if Robert Murat was named as a suspect in the hope his presence might “lead the couple into committing an incriminating indiscretion?” Or not.
In attempting to answer the key questions, the Mail produces more questions.
And the evidence..? The paper’s Michael Hanson wonders just how “foolproof” forensic tests are. You can’t argue with the science. Or can you?
DAILY MIRROR front page: “Kate weeps in Maddy’s room.”
The paper’s “EXCLUSIVE” is that Kate McCann sat alone in Madeleine’s “pink-painted room” and “sobbed in despair”.
How does it know this?
A friend says: “They are not running and will clear their names.”
Pages 4 & 5: Four pictures of the McCanns: arriving at Faro airport; boarding a flight,;on the plane getting ready for take off; and walking to their family home in Rothley.
Pages 6 & 7: “40 questions they both ‘refused’ to answer’.” And: “Officers say her replies left a lot to be desired, ‘it was claimed.’”
“McCANNS FACE KILLING CHARGE.”
“WHY COPS THINK SHE WAS NOT ABDUCTED.”
Page 9: Brian Reade has a daughter the same age as Madeleine McCann. Brian, who writes for the Mirror, has found it “impossible to imagine the depth of pain and guilt”. Without a body, says Brian, “They may never be able to prove their total and complete innocence.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE ‘WE CAN PROVE PARENTS DID IT.’ Portuguese police make dramatic new claim over evidence.”
Pages 2, 3 4, 5: The paper’s Martin Evans is on flight EZY 6552. He sees the McCanns travel home. He experiences “first hand…Kate’s pain and anguish on that most difficult of journeys”.
The seatbelts sign goes off. A note is passed to Kate. It is from another passenger. Kate reads the “simple message” of support. “A female passenger kneels by Kate and gives her a “tight hug.”
Kate sobs, “tears dripping slowly down her cheeks”.
Page 6: “Questions for the McCanns.” The Express has a go at solving the mystery. It says “Case could hang over us for ever say parents”.
DAILY STAR front page: “Maddie’s parents surprise flight.” Flight?
Pages 6 & 7: “We’re not running away.”
Page 7: More from Martin Evans, who sees the McCanns’ “pained expressions”.
Pages 8 & 9: “Furious donors want cash back as pressure mounts on friends to reveal all. DAD: I’LL USE £1M MADDIE FUND TO CLEAR OUR NAMES.”
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “Year-long wait for McCanns to clear name.”
Says Kate McCann: “Portuguese law prohibits us from commenting on the police investigation. Despite their being so much we wish to say we are unable to do so except to say this: we have played no part in the disappearance of our lovely daughter Madeleine.”
Page 4: “Couple facing a ‘life sentence of grief’.”
THE GUARDIAN front page: “Exhausted and under suspicion, Madeleine’s family come home.”
Pages 2, 4 & 5: “Rothley villagers relieved to see family return.”
“Thank goodness. They’re back where they belong and it’s the best place they could possibly be,” says one young mother.
The Rev Mark Chandler adds: “My every sense tells me that Rothley is just pleased and relieved to have them back.”
THE INDEPENDENT front page: “130 days since they left for a family holiday, the McCanns return to Britain without Madeleine. This is “THE HOMECOMING”.
Pages 2 & 3: “A shattered family returns to Britain without Madeleine”. “Portugal’s media clamour for conviction”.
Says one mother holidaying in Praia da Luz: “You don’t want to believe the worst but when you read headlines like these [in Portuguese media], obviously one conclusion seems more likely than another.”
Says the Diario de Noticia: “PJ wait for final examinations to arrest Madeleine’s parents.”

Unless the toy smelt really horrid, and she didn’t want to remember her that way.
Or she thought washing would destroy evidence.
Either way - innocent=no nasty smell=no evidence to destroy=no washing
Certainly it’s suggestive

blimey, come to think of it 732 does sound a bit prophetic.
and the author dissappeared!!!!!!!!!!

In fact, ‘reading between the lines’ it’s seemed to me from the start that Gerry’s made loads of similar litle but significant slips in his language.
Though overall, the one thing that still makes me entertain an eeny weeny doubt about the ever-more-likely overdose and cover-up scenario, is that I couldn’t possibly have ‘played a part’ so incredibly well for months without some more major slip of the tongue.
Oh, the sum is 11 AGAIN!
September 11th, 2007 at 1:41 am
I agree with ponchick about the toy.
I cut a lock of my dogs hair before he died.
I still bring it out and smell it now and again - it still smells
of the talcum powder I put on him to make him smell nice when
he was ill.
There is no way a mother would wash the childs toy - it
was always the key item in the investigation - that is why
she clung to it!

Catholics ? Clandestine burial ? Alone with key to a Catholic Church (consecrated) ? Lift the lid of a tomb, tuck her under, leave her in God’s hands ?
This is the stuff of fiction, but by gosh it just might be true.
Seems they are checking the possibility.
Final or temporary resting place ?

Also interesting that in his blog, Gerry changed from the imperfect (’have played’) to the perfect tense (’played’ - not an activity extending over time, but an isolated event at a particular point in time), and from ‘disappearance’ to ‘abduction’.
September 11th, 2007 at 1:33 am
Another thing:
the DNA was apparently found under the upholstery in the boot. The parents know a thing or two about DNA. When Kate was told by the PJ that the blood on the apartment floor showed M was already dead, she apparently screamed ‘that’s impossible’. And she was probably right.
They were pushing her, in order to monitor the reation.
I don’t think M’s body would have fitted into the spare tyre well, but for these careful medics it would make sense to minimize DNA contamination of the boot by removing the carpet from the boot floor before transporting a body. Much easier to clean a metal floor than a fibrous carpet.
At the same time, if the DNA was found there, it would also be much more difficult to explain how it got there from, say, the cuddle cat or an item of clothing. Why would such things ever have been under the boot floor carpet?
As for carrying the cuddle cat everywhere, that would be a good way of contaminating, or possibly contaminating everywhere they went for weeks following the ‘disappearance’.

More on political interference - right at the OUTSET.
It was reported in the portugese press a caouple of weeks agao, that the Portugese were surprised by the pressure initally applied UK government. They stated that 2 hours after the Mccann’s had reported Maddie missing, the Chief of Police had to interupt a dinner party to take a phone call from the British Ambassador in Portugal, and that it was made clear during that call that bristish Government wanted the Portugese to follow the ‘abduction’ theory.
This pressure only subsided when the UK police got involved with the case, and passed back up the UK chain of command the opinion that the Portugese did indeed have a reason to be concerned with the abduction theory provided by the Mccann’s.
The PJ were said to be furious that the British Government had intervened at a early stage to force the investigation down the ‘abduction’ route. They said that this had set back the investigation. Only when the British police became involved and agreed with the PJ, did they begin to get support from the British Government to widen the scope of the investigation.
Sorry lost the link.

I have been reading the comments… Look at 731 Smell of death - it seems to be written as truth, not just a guess, and possibly it is indeed! And cj (the different author) - as Mccann himself undercover.
Since the Pope blessed the photo of the girl -police could find the killers! It is worth converting into Catholic faith after it!
Kate was said to have washed the toy! A mother whose child is lost would never do it, she would instead go to sleep smelling her daughter!!!

Seen this ? Kate violent to children ?
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23411696-details/Madeleine:+Full+DNA+match+of+missing+girl+‘under+carpet+in+car+boot’/article.do
Quoting police sources, the papers alleged that Mrs McCann became “visibly out of control” under questioning by police, and that witnesses had described her as “violent” and “aggressive” towards her children.
It was claimed that she routinely put Madeleine and the two-year-old twins to bed in the family’s holiday apartment “while Gerry played tennis and lay by the pool”.
The reports also quoted witnesses who have given statements to police.
Pamela Fenn, who was in an apartment above the family on May 3 - the night Madeleine disappeared - is quoted as saying she believed Mrs McCann sometimes became violent and “out of control” in the room below.
She claimed that “the little girl’s screams calling for her daddy were very audible”.
Another witness is quoted as saying that Mrs McCann “seemed to have moments of aggressiveness towards her children” and that her husband, “though more absent, had more emotional control”.

Political Interference ?
You guys seen this :
http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=171910&version=1&template_id=38&parent_id=20
Police believe they have enough evidence to arrest and charge the McCanns, who arrived home in Leicestershire on Sunday. But in leaks to Portuguese newspapers they have complained the public prosecutor who will make the decision, Jose Cunha de Magalhaes e Menezes, is under intense political pressure to release the couple. It is alleged the prosecutor had agreed with police that the McCanns could be charged, but then cooled on the idea after a meeting between the McCanns’ lawyer Carlos Pinto de Abreu and Portugal’s attorney general Fernando Pinto Monteiro. Portuguese police are convinced the British government is applying political pressure at the highest level to keep the McCanns out of jail.

OMG - are you thinking what i\’m thinking?
A confession to a priest - a key given to them-
a secret midnight burial at the church?
September 11th, 2007 at 1:16 am
OMG those latest reports by the PJ police paint Kate McCann very badly, & they’re going to search the church the couple were given a key to. Seems the case against the McCrim’s just keeps getting stronger and stronger. Can’t wait for developments later today
September 11th, 2007 at 1:16 am
I was just reading about the intercepted phonecalls myself.
If they have 100 percent dna sample in the car - there is no questioning it - unless you believe that the Portuguese police force would risk Maddie turning up or her body being found - and proving that they planted evidence.
Without a body though - how exactly do you plant blood and corpse fluid from someone and get the British dna experts to lie also? That\’s a lot of jobs on the line - all for the sake of tourism????

September 11th, 2007 at 1:15 am
Hello again.
Any of the anoraks here got any ideas about the ‘5 weeks after May3′ - FIVE WEEKS, not 25 days - to which the DNA in the car boot has been dated?
Isn’t that after they got the car, went to see the Pope to bless M’s phot, then returned?
Wonder if they can date the ’scent’ on the bible. Suppose not.
PS: why is the answer to the sum so often 11? Or is it just me?
BUT: scenario… as twisted and confused ‘devout catholics’ this amounts to some kind of strange ritual associated with ‘burying’ their daughter?
September 11th, 2007 at 1:11 am
Yes, Maybe, No?
September 11th, 2007 at 1:10 am
I never made sexually inappropriate comments. They did.
Just thought it was important for you to know what you are dealing with.
The level of debate is barely above gutter.
Mods and admins: I am VERY concerned about Christoph.
September 11th, 2007 at 1:09 am
I wonder what connections the friends have that keeps some of their faces out of the paper?
September 11th, 2007 at 1:09 am
So the police do have evidence of phone intercepts?? i haven’t heard that
September 11th, 2007 at 1:02 am
IF some of the evidence they have is phone intercepts to the “friends” that convinced them Madeleine is dead and the McCann’s are therefore lying, it’s inconceivable the “friends” are not involved.
September 11th, 2007 at 1:01 am
I think you’re on the right track, spindoctors, and I’ve thought so for a while.
September 11th, 2007 at 12:53 am
There is a myspace site set up to \’out\’ the secret members of the Tapas 9 .
The McCanns were not the only ones to leave children unattended on that holiday.
Russell O\’Brien\’s daughter was the same age and size as Maddie and was vomiting that night…..why? Did the same dose make her ill?
If you have any info you can add to this site please do.
If you are using a proxy sever I am not sure if the music and video will work - but the video is worth watching - some hidden meanings in it!

Thanks for any feedback - I do not mind being interrogated - I have nothing to hide!

Andy - interesting theory. Wouldn’t be surprised.

September 11th, 2007 at 12:48 am
Stop misinterpreting what you read Blunger and stop being so bloody sensitive.
September 11th, 2007 at 12:46 am
Its just all so sad and tragic.
Please remember we are talking about the lives of children here.
September 11th, 2007 at 12:46 am
Blunger,
Well said.
