Madeleine McCann: Suspects Kate And Gerry And The Flight Of Fancy
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “EXCLUSIVE – ‘We’re being set up. I’ve had enough. Let’s go home.’” This is the “ANGER OF MADDIE DAD.”
Gerry and Kate McCann, “the doctors”, are back in their home town of Rothley, Leicestershire.
Pages 4, 5, 6 & 7: A statement from Gerry McCann in which he thanks one and all for the support and adds: “But we would like to ask for our privacy to be respected now that we have returned home.”
But their private grief is public spectacle. Can they be left alone with their daughter still missing and their campaign to find her in progress?
“YOU’LL LOSE THE TWINS.” Portuguese police are said to have told Kate McCann she should confess or face losing her two children.
“FACT OR FIT-UP?” The Sun considers the claims and gives each an “EXPLANATION.”
THE SUN SAYS: “McCanns’ hell”. The McCann’s “torment gets more horrendous by the day.” Where is the “kidnapper who might still have the four-year-old child in his clutches?”
THE TIMES front page: “McCanns fly home to fights their case.”
Mr McCann says the police’s focus on them is “deeply disturbing”.
Portuguese newspapers claim the McCanns failed to answer 40 questions put to them during interviews last week. “They apparently feared that they could wrongly implicate themselves if he [sic] did so.”
Pages 6 & 7: “Puzzles and mysteries at the very heart of the investigation.”
The paper tries to answer some of these questions. It tells us: “Although a small child could be killed quickly it would take time to hide the body so that it was not discovered in the biggest search in Portuguese history.”
The paper’s David Brown does not reveal how he researched this. He just knows.
The window to the McCanns apartment might have been opened from the inside. Brown of the Wapping Yard concludes: “Or was the window opened to make it appear as if an intruder had used it to enter the bedroom?”
Hmmm. What say you Mr Brown?
DAILY MAIL front page: “Police are determined to charge McCanns with killing Madeleine. HOME…FOR HOW LONG?”
Mr McCann is said to have told a friends: “We are being completely stitched up by the Portuguese police. We are completely f*****. We should have seen this coming weeks ago and gone back to Britain.”
Pages 2 and 3: “Madeleine’s parents consult Pinochet’s lawyer.” The McCanns have consulted with Michael Caplan QC, the British lawyer who represented Chilean dictator General Pinochet, who stood accused to torture and human rights abuses. Interesting?
Pages 4 & 5: “Questions the police must answer.”
The paper wonders if Robert Murat was named as a suspect in the hope his presence might “lead the couple into committing an incriminating indiscretion?” Or not.
In attempting to answer the key questions, the Mail produces more questions.
And the evidence..? The paper’s Michael Hanson wonders just how “foolproof” forensic tests are. You can’t argue with the science. Or can you?
DAILY MIRROR front page: “Kate weeps in Maddy’s room.”
The paper’s “EXCLUSIVE” is that Kate McCann sat alone in Madeleine’s “pink-painted room” and “sobbed in despair”.
How does it know this?
A friend says: “They are not running and will clear their names.”
Pages 4 & 5: Four pictures of the McCanns: arriving at Faro airport; boarding a flight,;on the plane getting ready for take off; and walking to their family home in Rothley.
Pages 6 & 7: “40 questions they both ‘refused’ to answer’.” And: “Officers say her replies left a lot to be desired, ‘it was claimed.’”
“McCANNS FACE KILLING CHARGE.”
“WHY COPS THINK SHE WAS NOT ABDUCTED.”
Page 9: Brian Reade has a daughter the same age as Madeleine McCann. Brian, who writes for the Mirror, has found it “impossible to imagine the depth of pain and guilt”. Without a body, says Brian, “They may never be able to prove their total and complete innocence.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE ‘WE CAN PROVE PARENTS DID IT.’ Portuguese police make dramatic new claim over evidence.”
Pages 2, 3 4, 5: The paper’s Martin Evans is on flight EZY 6552. He sees the McCanns travel home. He experiences “first hand…Kate’s pain and anguish on that most difficult of journeys”.
The seatbelts sign goes off. A note is passed to Kate. It is from another passenger. Kate reads the “simple message” of support. “A female passenger kneels by Kate and gives her a “tight hug.”
Kate sobs, “tears dripping slowly down her cheeks”.
Page 6: “Questions for the McCanns.” The Express has a go at solving the mystery. It says “Case could hang over us for ever say parents”.
DAILY STAR front page: “Maddie’s parents surprise flight.” Flight?
Pages 6 & 7: “We’re not running away.”
Page 7: More from Martin Evans, who sees the McCanns’ “pained expressions”.
Pages 8 & 9: “Furious donors want cash back as pressure mounts on friends to reveal all. DAD: I’LL USE £1M MADDIE FUND TO CLEAR OUR NAMES.”
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “Year-long wait for McCanns to clear name.”
Says Kate McCann: “Portuguese law prohibits us from commenting on the police investigation. Despite their being so much we wish to say we are unable to do so except to say this: we have played no part in the disappearance of our lovely daughter Madeleine.”
Page 4: “Couple facing a ‘life sentence of grief’.”
THE GUARDIAN front page: “Exhausted and under suspicion, Madeleine’s family come home.”
Pages 2, 4 & 5: “Rothley villagers relieved to see family return.”
“Thank goodness. They’re back where they belong and it’s the best place they could possibly be,” says one young mother.
The Rev Mark Chandler adds: “My every sense tells me that Rothley is just pleased and relieved to have them back.”
THE INDEPENDENT front page: “130 days since they left for a family holiday, the McCanns return to Britain without Madeleine. This is “THE HOMECOMING”.
Pages 2 & 3: “A shattered family returns to Britain without Madeleine”. “Portugal’s media clamour for conviction”.
Says one mother holidaying in Praia da Luz: “You don’t want to believe the worst but when you read headlines like these [in Portuguese media], obviously one conclusion seems more likely than another.”
Says the Diario de Noticia: “PJ wait for final examinations to arrest Madeleine’s parents.”

@ christoph
re your comment “Women, I believe, have equal capacity for evil and frequently exercise it. The millions of their children every year that die due to abortion”
there is no comparison to abortion and raping children - if you are going to try to prove women are evil too, that is not the argument to make

I wonder if anyone else has followed this link…..it would certainly explain why the Mccanns have had so much high powered help….the bit about the other uncle is interesting as well!

I would like to ask Mrs Tanner was the girl you saw alive.( moving ) or carried in a sleeping? (i.e- dead.)
[Mrs Tanner - one of the dinner guest confirmed seeing a man carrying a child that fits the description of Madeline.] she being dead had already been moved in order for the “false alarm” of abuction could be sounded was sounded”
I would say that some of the guests knew that there was no abduction & some of them played a part in it. To me the sighting of the girl and the man sounds staged…the hair and the blood samples changed that ’story of abdudction’.

Tracey says (1255) she wants someone “to confirm that DNA matching Madelaine has been found in the apartment in the resort that O’Brien and Tanner were renting.”
These people, this group of friends/colleagues, all had small children, who played with one another. The children could have left DNA in one another’s apartments prior to the night in question.

They will not find the body there probably - Gerry obviously brought the body or what was left of it when ‘he put his hand up to go to the loo ‘- i.e come home.

I think the Mc Cann’s are as guilty as hell! No responsible parent would leave their kids alone for a second! let alone a whole evening. Something happened that we obviously don’t know about, whether they killed Maddie or it was an accident we don’t know. Hopefully the truth will come out in the end once these assholes are charged. In britain it is illegal to leave a child under the age of 11 alone, yet no one has said anything about that.
Look at their appearances on the telly, NO grief, NO emotion, just cold and calculating, getting as much exposure as they can to raise as much money as they can which has gone into a limited company, NOT a charity.
There is something wholly wrong with these sad excuses for parents, I hope they get their comeuppence!
Bastards! lol..

Yes I agree a very long forum.
I was as surprised as any with the latest evidence especially the dead hair in the boot? I noticed the first sign of any grief from Gerry McCann was on the news the other day when he said they had no part in the abduction of their beautiful daughter.
I further don’t think any one person can say any one person is guilty or innocent as proved so many times, the grandfather who abused the grandchildren, O’h no my father would not do a thing like that, the child abused by the father, the mother could not believe this, the wife who has just found out that after living with her husband for so many years that he has downloaded images of children, even the priests who have abused children in their care, and yes the uncle who cried about his missing niece, who turned out to be the murderer, I could go on and on I truly believe that no one person has any idea of any living person you think you know. We never truly know any one, we humans have not the knowledge of another persons inner most thoughts, and only with the results of the latest D.N.A. evidence are more and more secrets brought to light.

Hi, I thought I posted. Someone started using the name Pat so I am using my full name, Patricia. I am the original Pat, think so YES.
Rosemary, I wrote you a note but now I look at the post isn’t here. Oh well, a long day. For now I still have company. Tomorrow I will share thoughts.
I am happy to see Stefanie came back.
This is a long forum, a lot of posts.
September 12th, 2007 at 7:56 am
Hi, I returned tonight and notice Stefanie from Germany was here at the beginning.
Now, on the other Anorak site I notice that someone else has the name Pat now. After signing off to cyberspace I think I will wait a while longer and follow this case longer. Due to the confusion with someone using the name Pat I will go by Patricia, real name.
Rosemary, you know I use to go by Pat. I have read your posts tonight. For now I still have company in town but I read as much as possible. I thought about the link you posted a while back with the picture of the back of the apartment and the walk to the Tapas…
I am especially tired after a long day work. Hopefully I can read the rest tomorrow evening.

The McCanns were actually given the key to the church in Portugal after Madeleine went missing - so they could use it as they wanted.
It is in this church and its vaults that the police now plan to search, plus an area nearby where there were excavations and which has recently been filled in.
Did y’all see this one? I found it on the other thread. Maybe it’s the same guy/gal as yesterday’s “Scent of Death”. I dunno but it’s surely cryptic and intriguing….any validity behind these allegations? Excavations??

Did Maddie suffer from Autism, or other problem which maight put the Mccann’s under pressure? Just wonder whether it might explain why the Mccann’s may have given her someting to calm her down… make her sleepy… so they could go out…
Did some research on net…
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,1931401,00.html
Quote:
The higher risk to child health is believed to be caused by medical problems in the parents, such as diabetes and hypertension, damaging the child in the womb, but doctors conducting the study said IVF and other fertility treatments may also play a role. Medical records of children born after their parents sought fertility treatment showed they were four times more likely to have autism than those born to fertile parents. Childhood cancers including leukaemia and brain tumours also rose.
The risk of more minor problems, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, rose by 40%, and other medical conditions affecting hearing and sight nearly doubled. Children had a 30% higher chance of being admitted to neonatal intensive care units and to stay in hospital for more than three days if they were born following fertility treatment, the study found.

1256 I fully agree, Brian Healy is the only person in the clan McCann that has show any sign of distress, and he is deeply saddened by Madelines disapperence.
September 11th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
Wow what a busy lot you have been this morning.
I’ve heard it all now. I have long siad that this country was far to tolerent of child neglect, and while it is off topic, the not guilty verdict in respect of Jacqueline Simpson proves my point entirely.
How a jury can accept there was no negligence when a 5 year old was up at midnight when she should have been in bed long before that.
How can they accept that there was no negligence when she was in charge of a child yet smoked canabis and drank 2 bottles of wine.
How can they accept there was no negligence when she let the dog, (a dangerous dog banned under UK law), into a room with a 5 year old child, knowing it was agitated due to fireworks, (hence the reason she let it into the house).
The poor child was mauled for 20 minutes before she died with 72 seperate injuries, and I can think of no worse way to die.
Sometimes it shames me to be British.
When you comapre the actions of Jacqueline Simpson with the McCanns, both placed the children in a dangerous situation, and if Madeline is dead, (which I still don’t believe), both led to the preventable death of a child.
Hopefully the Portugese will prosecute the McCanns because they would get off scot free here.

I hope so.
Maybe blocking a couple of IP numbers too.

“who stated for weeks that the McCanns were not suspects.”
Surely this meant “not arguido”. Absolutely true at the time. It never meant “we do not suspect them”. If the silly journalists took it as such, more fool them.
So the first telephone call was to the medis, the second to the police, the third to the british ambassador to bully the police, and the fourth (attempted) to the local priest. Is that the sequence ?
September 11th, 2007 at 8:12 am
My usual Portuguese info site is down this morning, so no Portuguese Papers until later - you’ll have to put up with me waffling instead
So - the PJ said yesterday that the story about the DNA match was false … well, we will have to wait and see. Don’t forget though, that this is the same Police force who stated for weeks that the McCanns were not suspects. The PJ play their cards very close to their chests and are extremely adept at bluff and double bluff.
I have no doubt that the British Govt are heavily involved, and will be putting pressure on the Portuguese at high levels … this may well be why we are seeing so many leaks - if the PJ and the Leicester police (who have been involved from the beginning) can get enough information into the British public domain with leaks, then public pressure may well cause the British Govt to back off.
With regard to the village church in PDL - interestingly at around 4am on the night of Madeleine’s disappearance Gerry asked for the local priest to be telephoned - the police and staff at MW refused, given the early hour of the morning. Gerry then asked for directions to the church - very oddly, since it is in the centre of the village and he had dined in a restaurant near it only 2 days before. Was he trying to make a point that he did not know where the church was?
What time is the church in PDL locked at night I wonder?

Brian Healy is a loving grandfather. I have yet to see anything to contradict this statement.
September 11th, 2007 at 6:17 am
What in the name of Our Lord is Kate’s Father’s involvement in this mess??
Will someone PLEASE pray tell where he fits in to the picture? I bloody well need to know this!!!!
September 11th, 2007 at 5:46 am
I don’t think my first instinct would be to spearhead an international fundraising campaign - maybe given time, yes but not imediately. My intial instinct would be to aid the police and other authorities, not to try and overshadow and direct them. But again that’s hypothetical because I have never found myself in that position.
September 11th, 2007 at 5:33 am
…and one more question: would your first instinct be to hire a lawyer or a private investigator..?
September 11th, 2007 at 5:17 am
The DNA match has been corroborated by numerous sources. As the Americans say: ‘Go figure’.
September 11th, 2007 at 5:12 am
This is exactly what I expected to see, but I’d like to see this corroborated from a source other than the the Sun. The next one on the tick list is to confirm that DNA matching Madelaine has been found in the apartment in the resort that O’Brien and Tanner were renting.
All of this aside, if you have 1 million pounds in the bank and a missing daughter, wouldn’t you hire a private investigation team to find her? Or would you fly around on a round the world trip meeting the rich and famous for three months, keeping 800,000 pounds in the bank for a rainy day, and then openly talk about not returning work for the forseable future..? And would you let your other two children out of your sight even for an instant?
September 11th, 2007 at 5:05 am
If I was looking to hide a body I would choose a graveyard. Easy explanations for disturbed ground and the scent of corpses. Not sure if this has anything to do with the case but it’s what I would do.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer’s gone, and all the flowers are dying
‘Tis you, ’tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer’s in the meadow
Or when the valley’s hushed and white with snow
‘Tis I’ll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.
And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You’ll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an “Ave” there for me.
And I shall hear, tho’ soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you’ll not fail to tell me that you love me
I’ll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.
I’ll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.
