Madeleine McCann: Suspects Kate And Gerry And The Flight Of Fancy
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “EXCLUSIVE – ‘We’re being set up. I’ve had enough. Let’s go home.’” This is the “ANGER OF MADDIE DAD.”
Gerry and Kate McCann, “the doctors”, are back in their home town of Rothley, Leicestershire.
Pages 4, 5, 6 & 7: A statement from Gerry McCann in which he thanks one and all for the support and adds: “But we would like to ask for our privacy to be respected now that we have returned home.”
But their private grief is public spectacle. Can they be left alone with their daughter still missing and their campaign to find her in progress?
“YOU’LL LOSE THE TWINS.” Portuguese police are said to have told Kate McCann she should confess or face losing her two children.
“FACT OR FIT-UP?” The Sun considers the claims and gives each an “EXPLANATION.”
THE SUN SAYS: “McCanns’ hell”. The McCann’s “torment gets more horrendous by the day.” Where is the “kidnapper who might still have the four-year-old child in his clutches?”
THE TIMES front page: “McCanns fly home to fights their case.”
Mr McCann says the police’s focus on them is “deeply disturbing”.
Portuguese newspapers claim the McCanns failed to answer 40 questions put to them during interviews last week. “They apparently feared that they could wrongly implicate themselves if he [sic] did so.”
Pages 6 & 7: “Puzzles and mysteries at the very heart of the investigation.”
The paper tries to answer some of these questions. It tells us: “Although a small child could be killed quickly it would take time to hide the body so that it was not discovered in the biggest search in Portuguese history.”
The paper’s David Brown does not reveal how he researched this. He just knows.
The window to the McCanns apartment might have been opened from the inside. Brown of the Wapping Yard concludes: “Or was the window opened to make it appear as if an intruder had used it to enter the bedroom?”
Hmmm. What say you Mr Brown?
DAILY MAIL front page: “Police are determined to charge McCanns with killing Madeleine. HOME…FOR HOW LONG?”
Mr McCann is said to have told a friends: “We are being completely stitched up by the Portuguese police. We are completely f*****. We should have seen this coming weeks ago and gone back to Britain.”
Pages 2 and 3: “Madeleine’s parents consult Pinochet’s lawyer.” The McCanns have consulted with Michael Caplan QC, the British lawyer who represented Chilean dictator General Pinochet, who stood accused to torture and human rights abuses. Interesting?
Pages 4 & 5: “Questions the police must answer.”
The paper wonders if Robert Murat was named as a suspect in the hope his presence might “lead the couple into committing an incriminating indiscretion?” Or not.
In attempting to answer the key questions, the Mail produces more questions.
And the evidence..? The paper’s Michael Hanson wonders just how “foolproof” forensic tests are. You can’t argue with the science. Or can you?
DAILY MIRROR front page: “Kate weeps in Maddy’s room.”
The paper’s “EXCLUSIVE” is that Kate McCann sat alone in Madeleine’s “pink-painted room” and “sobbed in despair”.
How does it know this?
A friend says: “They are not running and will clear their names.”
Pages 4 & 5: Four pictures of the McCanns: arriving at Faro airport; boarding a flight,;on the plane getting ready for take off; and walking to their family home in Rothley.
Pages 6 & 7: “40 questions they both ‘refused’ to answer’.” And: “Officers say her replies left a lot to be desired, ‘it was claimed.’”
“McCANNS FACE KILLING CHARGE.”
“WHY COPS THINK SHE WAS NOT ABDUCTED.”
Page 9: Brian Reade has a daughter the same age as Madeleine McCann. Brian, who writes for the Mirror, has found it “impossible to imagine the depth of pain and guilt”. Without a body, says Brian, “They may never be able to prove their total and complete innocence.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE ‘WE CAN PROVE PARENTS DID IT.’ Portuguese police make dramatic new claim over evidence.”
Pages 2, 3 4, 5: The paper’s Martin Evans is on flight EZY 6552. He sees the McCanns travel home. He experiences “first hand…Kate’s pain and anguish on that most difficult of journeys”.
The seatbelts sign goes off. A note is passed to Kate. It is from another passenger. Kate reads the “simple message” of support. “A female passenger kneels by Kate and gives her a “tight hug.”
Kate sobs, “tears dripping slowly down her cheeks”.
Page 6: “Questions for the McCanns.” The Express has a go at solving the mystery. It says “Case could hang over us for ever say parents”.
DAILY STAR front page: “Maddie’s parents surprise flight.” Flight?
Pages 6 & 7: “We’re not running away.”
Page 7: More from Martin Evans, who sees the McCanns’ “pained expressions”.
Pages 8 & 9: “Furious donors want cash back as pressure mounts on friends to reveal all. DAD: I’LL USE £1M MADDIE FUND TO CLEAR OUR NAMES.”
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “Year-long wait for McCanns to clear name.”
Says Kate McCann: “Portuguese law prohibits us from commenting on the police investigation. Despite their being so much we wish to say we are unable to do so except to say this: we have played no part in the disappearance of our lovely daughter Madeleine.”
Page 4: “Couple facing a ‘life sentence of grief’.”
THE GUARDIAN front page: “Exhausted and under suspicion, Madeleine’s family come home.”
Pages 2, 4 & 5: “Rothley villagers relieved to see family return.”
“Thank goodness. They’re back where they belong and it’s the best place they could possibly be,” says one young mother.
The Rev Mark Chandler adds: “My every sense tells me that Rothley is just pleased and relieved to have them back.”
THE INDEPENDENT front page: “130 days since they left for a family holiday, the McCanns return to Britain without Madeleine. This is “THE HOMECOMING”.
Pages 2 & 3: “A shattered family returns to Britain without Madeleine”. “Portugal’s media clamour for conviction”.
Says one mother holidaying in Praia da Luz: “You don’t want to believe the worst but when you read headlines like these [in Portuguese media], obviously one conclusion seems more likely than another.”
Says the Diario de Noticia: “PJ wait for final examinations to arrest Madeleine’s parents.”

Absolutely agreed. And I’m sure paedophilia is more common among Catholic priests than the general population, sadly, for several reasons including secrecy, but also homosexuality and the fact that homosexuals are vastly overrepresented as paedophiles.
In the lay Catholic community, however, I don’t believe the rate of paedophilia is higher or lower than the population at large.

Reported on SKY news :
Portuguese police claim to have found a full DNA match which links Madeleine McCann’s body to a hire car rented by her parents 25 days after she went missing.

moriarty, i think you have over estimated gerrys height, the shoes he was wearing are designer shoes and were made by hobble and half-witt. I have called them and they have said they do not usually divulge customers details, but they would make an exception for that whinning petit merde(little shit). They have said that the shoe was built up at the heel by no less than 3cm, which would make him arround 4′1. so I hope I have cleared that matter up!

If the McCanns are innocent then they have gone through the most
unbelievable pain and suffering, and it is likely to continue for
their whole lives.
If the McCanns are guilty then they have gone through the most
unbelievable pain and suffering, and it is likely to continue for
their whole lives.
A lesson for everyone is to be very wary of using the media for your
own means (be it in good faith or not…)

Thanks, Justice, I agree with your data although the actual number is about 90%, not 99 or 99.99.
I appreciate it, but I’ll decline because I don’t want to give out my identity online. It’s not personal, it’s business. I prefer not to get caught up in controversial issues so as not to offend my clients.
When I’m dealing with them, I’m just focussed on their needs.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Well - what can I say? Your loss….
September 10th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
The vast majority of paedophilia committed by a male on a female takes place in families, Honeydog, that is true.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Silly things like who will read a bedtime story, how will a stranger know when she’s sad, will she cry herself to sleep tonight (every night you are not with her), how will my child react to anything which is unfamiliar (which we all know as parents is the one thing children respond to), will she by now be a zombie like those who are found long after they have gone. Let’s face it, we would all like to believe someone is looking after the child like she was their own, but even if this is true it will not be what Madeleine is used to. As a young child she will probably eventually respond to kindness and forget what was before - but in the transition she will be greatly upset. Any parent will think this every night until it wears them out.
the McCanns seem only to be worn out now they are suspects

812 - My statistic refer to MEN and Pedophilia. NOT Catholics. That was my whole point. It is a MUCH broader problem than just within the Catholic Church.
So yes, I agree with you there. But that does not absolve the Catholic Church from the attrocities and violations against children for so long.
Do you want me to fax you the data?
September 10th, 2007 at 8:14 pm
I do, but I hardly know how the thing works. And I don’t give it out on the net for privacy reasons.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:14 pm
No one has so far mentioned that a vast amount (don’t have exact figures - sorry) of child abuse happens within families or someone known to the child.
Frightening.
For what it is worth I don’t think there’s more abuse than there used to be just that because of the media cases get reported wider.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:12 pm
There is a link, David. See 812 and 816.
The link is male homosexuals commit, on average, vastly more instances of paedophilia than male heterosexuals and the Catholic priesthood has a larger than normal distribution of male homosexuals.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
812 - Do you have a fax #??
September 10th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Some data:
What it really comes down to here is most paedophilia is committed by men. Agreed.
About one third of child victims of paedophiles are male — yet adult male homosexuals make up nowhere near one third of the population.
Therefore, assuming the actual number of victims per offender is the same (and if it isn’t this would indicate simply that homosexual paedophiles commit far more instances of paedophilia per offender), male homosexuals commit more paedophilia than male heterosexuals.

805 - LOL. Thanks, But I don’t think we need Wikipedia to set the record straight on this topic. It’s pretty well known worldwide. It’s killing the #’s in the U.S. Catholic Churches.
Serious damage control was needed - 4 years ago - but the previous Pope did not do much, given his age and health. Today’s Pope, albeit younger and healthier, does even less.
The gave their churches a set of brooms to sweep it all under the carpet. Oh, and don’t forget the hundreds of millions of dollars of PARISHONERS money donated over the years, to pay for damages committed by Priests who were supposed to be CARING and Educating these children. Not Molesting and Raping them. DISPICABLE. And yes, I am Catholic and can comment on this attrocity as I’ve seen people deal with this first hand. One friend had such a hard time, that he is no longer with us today. It is deplorable. And none of the $$$ in the world can repair the damages done - or the innocence lost.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:09 pm
As Sky are breaking this full DNA match story, I think we can safely predict the other Murdoch organs are going to start to fully turn on the McCanns in tomorrow’s papers.
This is going to be the messiest story…ever, probably.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:06 pm
In terms of organisations it’s pretty safe to say that there is no worse offender for child abuse than the Catholic church. No other organisation comes close. There is a link there whether you like it or not.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Justice for All, you’ve stated that 9999 in 10000 cases of paedophilia are committed by one sex.
That’s a staggering figure. Now, the actual figure would be staggering too, but yours is so incredibly so that you have an obligation to prove it, not the other way around.
Where is your source that 99.99% of paedophiles are men?
The numbers are huge — but you started with exaggerating and then responded to my response by exaggerating even more.
Now what is true is that about 90% of paedophiles are men and paedophilia is more common among male homosexuals than male heterosexuals (and I have absolutely nothing against most male homosexuals, the vast majority of whom are decent people).
I’m unaware of any proof that paedophilia is more common among Catholics as a group except insofar as a larger percentage of Catholic priests are homosexual than is represented in the general population.
But practicing Catholic laymen? There is no epidemic there.
There are so many Catholics, of course, it is still a great problem.
Religion is in most cases a restraining force. Crime does not diminish when you take religion out of the equation.

Does anyone think Murat has a fair claim to the £1m, if it turns out he wasn’t involved.
September 10th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
803 - no, that’s his ego. I meant his physical height.
No wonder his head can’t fit thru the door.
788 - What happened to your chivalrous front?
September 10th, 2007 at 7:57 pm
796 - With due respect, Christoph, you are unequivocally wrong here.
The statistics on Pedophilia, world wide are 99.99% of such acts against children are committed by MEN.
The post I was responding to was not discussing murders of children it was suggesting a forum for Pedophilia discussions which the poster believes is high amongst Catholics. Especially given the U.S. Catholic Church’s HUGE Pedophila lawsuits of today.
In my reference to males responsible for 99%+ of sexual abuse against children, you may think this is an exaggeration, but I have frequently seen these statistics and they represent facts.
Additionally, you may also believe that women have the same capacity to hurt and kill as men do. Again, there is substantiated sociolological and psychological studies that would EASILY refute your unsubstantiated claim here.
Let me leave you with one piece of information - TESTOSTERONE and hormonal imbalances are behind a lot of the appalling statistics that exist today on the link between MEN, rape, and sexual abuse. To include Pedophilia.
So in your defense of the Catholic Church, yes, the problem is much more wide spread than one, albeit huge, organization. And it is indeed, a growing problem within the males population worldwide.

Yep … and the Whining Midget and Skeletor do not seem to be programmed with that basic human trait… unless of course they really do not give a shit
September 10th, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Even the fact that your child would be severely distressed is enough to make a parent crumble. It’s called an emotional link.
September 10th, 2007 at 7:53 pm
If you had gone through the torment of four months of not knowing where your daughter was, not knowing who she was with or what was happening to her, by now you would be an emotional wreck. Forget the horrors of peadophiles etc. - as a parent even things like - she will miss me so much at bed time, she will by crying her eyes out for me or her family, she may not know the language of the people she is with, she will be withdrawn with emotional confusion - i’m sorry, but even the most rational person would by now be absolutely furious at the suggestion that they were responsible for not only her disappearance - but her murder?
They would not be calmly stating it was rediculous, they would be screaming from the rooftops in protest1

September 10th, 2007 at 7:48 pm
The Catholic/abuse link is only because when it happens it makes the news and newspapers. So it seems much worse than it is. It’s pretty bad (the recent LA case was pretty appalling no matter what your views) and the church’s efforts to cover up these indiscretions makes it worse but it is unfair to say that all Catholics are paedophiles.
