Madeleine McCann: Torture, A Witness, Robert Murat’s Innocence And Richard Branson Investigates
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
SUNDAY MAIL front page: “MADDIE POLICE TORTURE TRIAL.”
As reported by Anorak on June 11 (see Madeleine McCann And Amaral Policing): “Chief Inspector Goncalo Amaral has been accused of concealing evidence that the mother of eight-year-old Joana Cipriano, who disappeared in the Algarve three years ago, was tortured by police into confessing she had killed her daughter, whose body was never found.”
Is this the British Press discrediting the Portuguese police? Should they leave our Kate and Gerry alone? (Do the Portuguese police have a PR?)
“Lies, beatings, secret trials: the dark side of police handling Madeleine case” – If the Portuguese police do have a PR, they should get a new one.
“Madeleine: Hair in McCann Renault: ‘It could be anyone’s’” - British forensic experts have concluded the fragments said to be Madeleine’s could belong to any number of people who had come into contact with the silver Renault Scenic.
THE OBSERVER: “Maddy police: we blundered.” Remember Robert Murat?
Says a source said to be from within the Portuguese police force: “British police and crime experts also suggested that Murat fitted the profile to have been behind a kidnapping. But the Lisbon investigators were from the start unsettled about the lack of any motive. Months later, there is nothing to suggest he was involved.”
But, er, Robert Murat remains a suspect.
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: “Hope for McCanns as law on secrecy is eased.”
Plans are afoot to change the rules in Portugal. The “new law means that all suspects and third parties, including the media, will have access to police documents in any investigation - unless the public prosecutor decides that secrecy will benefit the inquiry or protect the rights of the accused.”
And the police can make their views known to the public, too.
And: the McCanns have announced an £80,000 advertising campaign to help find Madeleine.
SUNDAY EXPRESS: “MADELEINE MYSTERY - POLICE TO ACT OUT MADDIE TRAGEDY”.
No longer a criminal case. It is now a tragedy. The Encyclopaedia Britannica says a tragedy is a “branch of drama that treats in a serious and dignified style the sorrowful or terrible events encountered or caused by a heroic individual.”
Yes, dignified. Who knew?
DAILY STAR ON SUNDAY front page: “MADDIE. The missing journey.”
Where did she go?
SUNDAY TIMES front page: “Branson gives cash to defend McCanns.”
Sir Richard Branson is giving £100,000 to create a “fighting fund” to help the parents of Madeleine McCann to clear their names.
A source close to Branson says: “Sir Richard wants to ensure the McCanns get access to the best legal advice. He has a good instinct on these things.”
The Virgin Sniffer will crack the case. Or will his PR and marketing departments get there first.
But is Branson right? Let’s take a look at the survey…
“According to a YouGov poll for The Sunday Times, only 20% of respondents believe that the McCanns are completely innocent. Nearly half (48%) believe that they could have been responsible for their daughter’s death, even if it was an accident; 32% were unsure. A total of 40% said that the McCanns’ high-profile campaign had made them suspicious, but 50% said that it had not.”
Tasteful stuff. But we need another poll to find out what happened to Madeleine McCann.
Times Columnist India Knight is a McCann junkie. “I want to stop reading, listening, watching, Googling, amateur sleuthing; I nauseate myself with my own prurience. My appetite for commentary – which is all that’s left, in the absence of hard facts – has been sated many times over. But I can’t stop.”
She craves information. But there isn’t any. Unless you listen to sources”…
“Police leaks, gossip and a clash of cultures close in on McCanns” - Yesterday the police spokesman Olegario de Sousa quit “in dismay” at the daily leaks to the press.
Those Portuguese police leaks only add to the speculation and the pain. Thanks goodness for the clarity and sensitivity provided by the Times.
As the Times notes: “Maria do Sameiro Oliveira, a psychologist who does criminal profiling for the police, said she found it strange ‘how they function so much as a unit, always holding hands rigidly’ and pointed out that normally in cases of child disappearances, ‘the mother and father start to diverge, one wants to continue the search, the other not’. She added: “They show little evidence of suffering. They are very formal.”
You should not be influence by Ms Oliveria’s words. When responding to the Times’ survey, make your judgement. Make up your own survey.
THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY: “The McCanns: Unbelievable truth or unimaginable nightmare?”
The human interest angle and a time to look back over week of speculation.
NEWS OF THE WORLD: “MADDIE: THE SECRET WITNESS – TV boss holds vital clue to mystery.”
Jeremy Wilkins is the man whose “bombshell testimony could clear the McCanns”.
And: “Jeremy Wilkins’ evidence blows holes in the police theory that Gerry and Kate killed four-year-old Madeleine.”
Wilkins is said to be the man who spoke to Gerry McCann for up to 15 minutes outside the holiday apartments — “moments after checking on his children for the last time.”
A pal says: “He is entirely convinced of Kate and Gerry’s innocence. He believes they are a decent family caught up in an unimaginable nightmare.”
With Wilkin’s certainly and Richard Branson’s sense of smell, the McCanns may be placed once more above suspicion.

Maria,
I don’t think you are being rude at all. So please do not feel I am when I say that no one really knows what any of these people saw, when they reported seeing it, what they heard or any other important details. We are all speculating including you.
September 16th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
Moderation… with all due respect ,why do you spend such an inordinate time trashing every poster here who does not listen to you or accept your sanctified version.?
There is after all probably a grain of truth in every single speculation here ,not just yours. You sound a tad defensive ,if not outright paranoid. We are all happy to read your opinions without attacking you.Cannot you show same respect back. ? Your theories after all hold no more weight than anyones else’s here.
Just a thought.

Sorry about errors! In a hurry! They were reported to feel sorry FOR Jane Thanner, for obvious reasons.
I have not seen any reports of the McCanns being other than courteous and kind to anyone, mind you, with the two exceptions of (a) Gerry losing his cool for a couple of minutes with a Spanish TV interviewer and (reportedly) Kate telling the PJ it was “bloody ridiculous” to suggest that she killed her daughetr, kept her body hidden for at least 25 days, moved it in the boot of the car they’d hired and disposed of it, all under the noses of the PJ themslves and in the full glare of the the world’s media.
I suspect there are a lot of people who believe that to be “bloody ridiculous” so maybe she can be excused.
I am not being rude, Paulette, but I just don’t believe what you are saying holds water at all.
We have a great sense of humour, even at the grimmest times, but it can’t be allowed to get in the way of truth in a case as serious as this one.
Must work now, urgent!

There were rumours that Tony Blair at some point was being blackmailed by Mossad for some sexual flavour out of the ordinary.
I have been sucked so deeply into this vortex of the McCanns and how absolutely obscene the British Press and their masters behave.
I have clearly to see how these people in power take us to be such fools, such pliable, malleable fools. They don’t give a shit about anything but protecting their interests and interests of those who can in turn be of some service.
Mad.die
Thank God you are aware from this sickening mess that constitutes good breeding and uppercrust education.
My God, English society is in a bad a condition as the British rugby team.
You swallow all this shit that is dished out at you.
The wedding photographs are just nauseating to stomach. My God who the fuck do they think they are fooling.
Can anyone believe this show that is being put on.
March on parliament, ask for answers. Demand to know why this couple are being so protected.
And I think when the answers come out we will be shattered by the darkness that surrounds this whole script.
To save my self I am going to leave this forum (God Willing) and go and water the garden, plant some seeds (going into summer here).
And get a life.
Maybe one of you could be kind enough to e-mail me the final result.
I hope there is a big shake up - the boil needs to be lanced.

130 Pixie,
I’m not sure if the story is true. I read 2 similar stories in a Portuguese and then in an Italian paper this morning. It’s too sickening to think about.
The thing which is so frustrating about these stories is…….okay the press cannot reveal sources it seems in this case - fine. However, why can’t they at least do some leg work like old school reporters & investigate the possibility of any connection there might be between the owner of the crematorium and the McCanns or someone the McCanns know? The reporter has photographs of the McSham Clan, Tapas 9, local paedophiles & other shadowy characters - why not let him take a look at some photos to see if any look familiar.
The characters in this drama are all tightly connected. It is difficult to maintain focus on Madeleine when everything seems to actually divert away from her hinders us from finding her.
I don’t think a serious reporter who remains in his/her office and doesn’t travel to the scene of the crime is doing their job adequately. Unless of course they have a solid reliable source at that location. But then it gets fuzzy again with 2nd hand accounts.

Everything we are looking at is obviously from the media.
Knock the media they are paid for speculating and doing a lousy job on the whole.
I do agree that eventually a decision will be made by the investigating judge.
What do you suggest - should we not bother commenting on the case?
PS -there is only one alleyway which passes the apartment on the tapas bar side of the complex. According to the Tanner statement that is where she saw the man and child.
September 16th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Team McCann, their lawyers ,and Branson and others, are not about proving McCann innocence, and not about finding Madeline. They all have ulterior motives in this.
It is about money and deals afterwards. It is like Kylie Minogue propaganda machine to keep their image clean, nothing to do with truth at all.Just sit back and spend a fortune blaming everybody else, so that it will all just go away .
It is about destroying the credibility of Portugal and its police to render any case/trial “unfair” because the police are all “criminals and corrupt ” who stitched up McCann’s, for reasons unbeknown to anyone with half a braincell.
By bigging up the McCann’s in UK and world to be paragons of virtue, it makes a trial in UK “unfair” ,as UK could not find a jury who was not biased in McCann favour, given the Murdoch Empire, and other press, and Team McCann force feeing us with their “iconic goodness.”
Whatever happened: in the end it is the fault of McCanns for leaving 3 such young vulnerable children all alone ,whilst they went off to dine.It is their fault that finding her has been impossible given they put such high profile media about. It is their fault the PJ were hampered from get go because PJ could not examine apartment day one due to the Tappas lot swarming all over it. It is their fault that by generating so much PR the Pj were intimadated by thoughts of bad relations with UK IF they went with their guts..which was they suspected them from start, given they could find not a shred of evidence to suggest child had been victim of any abduction. or kidnap for ransom..
The McCanns (guilty or not of foul play ) have behaved in the most disingenuous way, and ended up hindering ,not helping, either the police, or the search, or the finding of their daughter. They are guilty of that at very least. And now are trying to re- launch PR to get out of the “own goal” they and they alone by becoming “celebrities ” caused.
September 16th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
129 - surely he’s seen the faces of the McCanns in the media? Did he identify them as this Polish couple?
September 16th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Paulette,
I don’t want to be rude in any way, but what you are saying is not true. Jane Tanner remembered immediately Madeleine went missing about the man she had seen. I don’t think she thought it was certain it was a child but it was definitely a bundle which could have been a child. (I say “definitely” but, hey! we’re dealing with press reports here! That’s waht the press said at the time, anyway.)
Jane Tanner reported this sighting to the police as soon as they inteviewed her. They did nothing beyond that very simple sketch of the back of a man’s head which they showed around the resport in the next few days. The McCanns pushed and pushed for a fuller description to be issued and eventually the police did issue Jane Tanner’s description, very much under pressure.
I make no suggestions as to why they refused to issue the description earlier but it is a simple fact that they did NOT issue the description until pressurised to do so. Secrecy laws were again quoted at the time.
It is not true to suggest that everybody knew each other in that resort. How on earth could they? Visitors are coming and going all the time! That’s the nature of the place. One does not normally go up to someone carrying what looks a bit like a child wrapped up and ask them if they are abducting the child! One would assume a dad or grandad carrying a child back to their room, if, indeed, one even bothered to think about it at all.
It was reported that the McCanns felt sorry because Jane Tanner. If this is all true, can you imagine how she has been feeling ever since? She may well have been the last person to see Madeleine.

Ummmmmmm……if you would have read the Anorak piece at the header of this thread maybe you’d have realized that this is from whence my info came (in the first part). It was a joke.
Although her excitement and well wild abandon glee about a missing child is odd wouldn’t you say?
So is is that the mysterious Anorak writers can joke around but us regular commenters cannot? We can’t even try?
Please do fill me in? Please Moderation tell me the rules of Anorak or are they your rules supersleuth?
Stereotypes are so blown out of proportion aren’t they?
Ignorant things like:
The British have such brilliant senses of humor.
The British are so thoughtful and charming.
The British are very polite.
Damn you Christopher Robin & Hugh Grant for making me believe this crap!

I have troubles posting links – so I’ve copied the whole article. It’s from sundaymirror (today).
Do you think this can actually be a “real” story? I find it quite hard to believe…
Burner at pet crem sealed off by police
Police searching for Madeleine have sealed off an incinerator at one pet cemetery and are investigating two others.
The line of inquiry adds weight to fears her body will never be found.
Detectives first went to Creon Starlight Pet Cremation Service, near the town of Monchique, 30 miles from Praia da Luz, in July.
Officers have since examined another pet incinerator near Lisbon and one in Spain.
Creon Starlight owner Evert Hoos, 61, told detectives a couple claiming to be Polish but with English accents arrived at his premises two weeks after Madeleine vanished.
He was asked to dispose of “two dogs” in black sacks which he incinerated without looking at them.
He told the Sunday Mirror the couple seemed emotionless and did not ask for the ashes, instead insisting they were scattered on local scrub-land.
Mr Hoos said: “I am now haunted by thinking, what if one of the bags contained something more sinister?”
The police who called had claimed they were investigating a strange smell.
But Mr Hoos said: “They then asked me straight away if I knew anything about what happened to Madeleine. I said no, but I immediately thought about that couple.
“Usually the people coming to me are upset and in tears but they weren’t.
“It was also strange how they didn’t ask me for the ashes. And I thought it odd that they spoke such excellent English. It was all just a bit strange.
“They said they had to dispose of two dogs. Afterwards I scattered the ashes. They left quickly when it was done.”

“Lost & Found” Game Helps Find Missing Persons
A new “game” launching in the UK this week encourages players to look at photos of lost or abducted children and adults on their handhelds and to “click” the picture if they see them. From what I understand, the location of the player is used to help track the individual. The idea is from Lizbeth Goodman, director of Smartlab Digital Media Institute at the University of East London and is backed by the likes of Microsoft Research and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (US).
Why a “game”? Folks are more likley to help out if they need not sign up or deal with police.

I know it’s completely unethical and immoral to mention the physical attributes of a person who I don’t really know. But since it’s the Christain Sabbath & Rosh HaShana I’m going to do it and feel that God-Moses-Buddha-Elvis-Diana are on my side. Ms. Goodman looks like a yoga instructor by day - dominatrix by night.
Or maybe I got that mixed up?
I don’t know? It’s just that the entire thing with Branson and who he is….Wilkinson being a tv producer….the Prime Minister and his wife…..Pinochet’s lawyer……all these doctors…….I mean I need to create a character tree to keep all these names and connections straight but don’t even have a space large enough. (Ugh! Branson can you donate? Pretty please?)

Gerry McCann was interviewed at the Edinburgh TV/Media Festival on 25 August by a BBC journalist (male - not sure of the name) and then, if course, by the great and very well-connected Kirsty Wark of BBC Newsnight fame.
You can get the first of these two interviews at:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6963499.stm
About 1 min 30 secs into a 4 min 30 secs interview, Gerry McCann says this (I have transcribed this verbatim and you can check it on the link). Does anyone else find his wording curious, to say the least?
QUOTE
“…I don’t think it’s necessarily beneficial to have constant coverage, what we just want is, given the huge saturation coverage, particularly in the U.K. and also in Portugal, what we really just want to do, I mean, we hope it never gets there, but, if Madeleine is still missing, we just want to remind people, from time to time - infrequently, now, - that she is still missing, and that we’re still looking…”

123, to cover up an accidental death by over sedating would at least mean the McCscareers weren’t ruined by being struck off. And if all the doctors were at it…
September 16th, 2007 at 1:15 pm
After much time spent today reading the posts and catching up only this much I can come up with for now.
Although there has been very little reported to support an abduction ruling out one was impossible too. The dog study added to the problem with an abduction theory. Exactly what odds are of an abduction at this point I am unaware. ??
Considering the accidental death theory there has been more reported to support such as the timeline of the evening, movement of the party, no obvious action as a result of the neighbor’s observations, etc.
BUT with an accidental death theory WHAT could possibly happen that would require such an extreme way to deal with the situation? That is what I can’t imagine. There is no way I can figure a reason resulting from an accidental death to hide a body and go through what all of us witness. How many people do you know to go through all of this to cover up an accidental death? What difference would it make regarding neglect whether the child went missing while alone or had an accident? I don’t know the answer to that either.
Adding to the confusing notice that while money is donated for a defense all at the same time there is a renewed campaign to sell bracelets and hang posters in search for a living child.
I do not find a reason for the Portugal police to frame the McCanns.
No. I am no further along with than before just left thinking again only in hindsight will much be clear.
September 16th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
Branson has now gone up in my estimation as he obviously believes in
‘Innocent until proven guilty’. Good for him for not cutting and running; he continues to support them.
Paulette, If you bother to go and read the feature properly then you’ll see that India Knight means the oft repeated ’sources close to the investigation’.
She is a long standing and well respected writer and author.
How can you slag off someone just because they don’t prance around on your little bandwagon?
September 16th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
116. Jazzy,
This is VERY interesting.
I don’t normally believe in conspiracy theories or complicated crime stories and tend to believe the simplest answer.
But this is too weird. I didn’t mention this earlier because I thought a lot of people would get upset with me but here it goes.
A few months ago, my husband told me of a British company (I cannot remember the name & will try to fidn their website) that is using GPS to create a kind of “game” to find missing children. We had started talking about this because I was wondering aloud why countries cannot use GPS in some way when it comes to crimefighting.
Anyway, so he a few days later came across an article about just that & then we looked at their website to get more info. Almost simultaneously we both got the creeps & both said, ‘This company is going to have or already does have something to do with the McCann case.’ This company uses cell phones. When a child goes missing, data like physical description, photo, last known whereabouts, abductor info etc…..will instantly get sent to your phone if you are withint a certain mile radius of the abduction or sighting.
Now my husband doesn’t really believe this. He was simply knowing where my mind was going. Usually he’s the one to believe in conspiracies and bizarre connections & complicated crimes but this time I feel a bit that way about the McCann case. I still have not figured out what the connection is between Brown & GM? Anyone?
Anyway, I will try to find that website. It’s really weird. It’s basically a serious crime solving tool set up like a computer game.

“My Life In Anorak”, could be a book there. Do you think?

So the vulpine Richard Branson is donating £100,000 to the poor, misjudged, vulnerable McCanns is he? Well he’s always been a good friend of Labour. No doubt Brown will see that he’s reimbursed —Lord Richard Branson?

From an earlier report in the ‘Telegraph’:
QUOTE:
Gonzalez asked the McCanns: “You were the last people to see Madeleine alive, is that correct?”
Mr McCann replied: “That’s part of the investigation and we are not going to divulge anything that might get in the way of the investigation.”
In response, the presenter said: “The investigation took a new turn this month when traces of blood were discovered in the room. When you heard that how did you react?”
It was at this point that Mr McCann snapped and left the room, adding: “You have to talk to the police.”
Glaring at Gonzalez, he said: “Do you know what? This is all investigation, all these questions are about the investigation and we cannot comment.”

me I think it was that when Ben Needham went missing the internet wasn’t in general use so there wasn’t the same means of getting the story out there. Once again though, it was the police who dismissed the idea of abduction and focused on the teenage uncle, allegeing he had killed him and buried him. Never any proof but he is still under a cloud.

111 Maria. I know what you meant and yes I agree with you.
Paulette, its a v. big resort so nobody could know everyone and any parents would have been milling around with children from the pyjama creche.
As soon as the police arrived she told them. THAT NIGHT and from then on she was a witness.
