Madeleine McCann: Call Off The Dogs, Kate McCann’s Tears And Fatima
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns send to US for help against evidence of sniffer dogs.”
Gerry and Kate McCann have consulted lawyers working on behalf of Eugene Zapata in Madison, Wisconsin.
In October 1976, Zapata’s wife, Jeanette, went missing. Her body has never been found. Last year sniffer dogs were brought in and Zapata was charged with her murder. The case went before Judge Patrick Fielder who said the evidence – dogs had picked up the scent of a corpse in Zapata’s basement – was inadmissible. He said the dogs were unreliable.
The dogs have yet to make a comment.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY JUDGE: LET ME TELL ALL.”
Pedro Daniel dos Anjos Frias wants to “speak freely” about the case.
Pages 6 and 7: “Mum’s tears at 11am Mass.” Once again the Mirror is all eyes for Kate McCann’s eyes. She is crying.
In church, Father Keith Tomlinson narrates the parable of the Prodigal Son. An eight-year-old child called Molly Earp reads “Jesus please continue to love and protect us, until she is found.”
And then Jesus can have a rest and the police can resume normal duties…
Pages 8 and 9: “On the beach Gerry gave Maddy loads of hugs and kisses, he was a perfect dad..The next time I saw him was about midnight..I saw a man alone, desperate. He was crying and screaming her name over and over and over again.” Words from a “WAITER AT MADDIE’S LAST MEAL” before she vanished.
THE SUN front page: “Maddie ‘gag’ lift.” Friends of Kate and Gerry McCann are hopeful of being allowed to speak out and defend themselves. A judge has asked for a lifting of Portugal’s secrecy laws.
Pages 6 and 7: “AGONY TO COME.” The Sun produces a picture of Kate and Gerry McCann’s wedding day. They are holding Kate’s goddaughter Ellie. There is also a new picture of Madeleine McCann “looking angelic”. Have you seen her? Or are you watching the parents?
THE EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE. POLICE TO SEARCH SHRINE FOR BODY.” The McCanns went to Fatima. The McCanns car clocked up 1,709 miles in the fives weeks after their daughter went missing.
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER Pages 2 and 3: “Hand in hand, McCanns go to family church.” The “devoutly Catholic couple” are leaving for church from their “£600,000 home”. Kate McCann is carrying Cuddle Cat.
Pages 4 and 5: “1,000 letters each day in support of the McCanns. Between 500 and 1,000 letters a day arrive at the McCanns’ home. “There are some crank letters,” says a spokesman for the family, “but that’s inevitable.”
None of these letters are believed to point to the whereabouts of Madeleine McCann.
Alex Cayles, a former neighbour of the McCanns, says “I never heard Kate or Gerry raise their voices to their children or anyone else.” Can the same be said of any parents of three very young children?
DAILY MAIL front page: a picture of Kate McCann smiling.
“MADELEINE:
• Doubt cast on sniffer dogs
• Police frontman quits investigation
• Branson funds the McCanns’ defence
• Witness’s vital new evidence”
Pages 10 and 11:2 “Maddie: Is the case crumbling?”
Chief inspector Olegario Sousa has resigned “in disgust” at the way in which fellow Portuguese officers have been briefing the media behind his back.
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE MUM ON MURDER RAP. Now cops claim to have found ‘a motive’.”
The Star says police have read Kate McCann’s diary and “claim it reveals she had a motive to kill”.
Pages 4 and 5: “DID KATE HAVE A MOTIVE?”
Well, we haven’t read the diary, but…
“The idea that Portuguese detectives are looking at my daughter’s most personal thoughts and taking them out of context is terrible,” says Kate McCann’s father Brian Healy.
Pages 6 and 7: “HUNT AT HOLY SHRINE.” Is Madeleine McCann’s body buried at Fatima, one of the Catholic Church’s holiest sites? The Star says the couple went there three weeks after their daughter went missing.
We wonder. Is she? Or is she buried in Germany, America, London or Morocco, places also visited by the McCanns?
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “New allegations against McCanns - As the McCanns begin a new campaign to clear their names, further allegations emerged over the weekend.”
Oh?
“The hire car: The Renault Scenic hired by the McCanns 25 days after Madeleine went missing. New claims centre on its high mileage. Between May 27 and July 3, it was driven 1,700 miles, with police looking into the possibility that it may have been used to dispose of a body…There were also reports that detectives were waiting for permission from a judge to seize and dismantle the car to search for ‘traces of skin’.”
THE GUARDIAN: No Maddy news today.

130… I am still sitting on the fence, but I have to admit that Kates mum is also a stoney faced woman, she also never shows emotion, and has actually got quite a hard face, and she never mentions the word “gerry” only my daughters husband, you can almost pick up that she doesnt like him at all

i used to quite richard branson, I now think i would not piss on branson if he were on fire. I read that he had leant on other wealthy folk to donate to the fund. Surely if these people wanted to…. forget it, I feel sick.
I just hope they are convicted of at least neglect or causing death by neglect so that dick branson looks more of an asshole than he does already.
BRANSON, IF THE GLOVE FITS, LET THEM WEAR IT!!!!!!!!!!

Why begrudge the McCanns a few coppers of compasionate leave - would you prefer that they reported in to work week after they lost their daughter and operated below par - in which case, think of the law suits against the NHS Trust what what.
Have you people neither heart nor brains, nor self interest. Take Mr Bulldump, happy enough to have legal representation when charged with assaulting our Rosssers, but shirty about the McCanns have competent counsel

I think Most Haunted and Derek Acorah are absolutely hilarious, and watch them if I want a good giggle!

It seems you’re taking things too personally. For myself, I just find it odd that a LOCUM GP who only works TWO DAYS PER WEEK, has to sign off SIX DEATHS in the FOUR WEEKS running up to her holiday.
I just wonder if that is normal for a locum, as my understanding was that it is usually the normal GP that is preferred, and I find it strange as would it be normal for some one who is soooo part time and only standing in at different surgeries, to go rather than a partner GP in the surgery.

128. Not sure if you meant me but I am not Chloe but I was #126. The reason I ask about a diplomat is because from the very beginning as a foreigner I though it odd that PM sent someone from his office to the McCanns in Portugal as a ‘consultant’ who stayed there for several days. I mean that’s why countries have embassies & diplomats at these embassies.

…and I just hope Richard Branson doesn’t end up with egg on his face. Does he want to throw money at the Ben Needham case and have that re-opened ? or any of the other “unsolveds” come to that !!

Good Lord in Heavens, I hope I will not die in my home.

This talk about Clarence Mitchell stinks from the very start.
He was initially seconded to support the Mccanns in the Algarve (and so did other government officials). I wonder how many british citizens abroad who get into trouble benefit from the same sort of “consular” support that includes flying in a team from downing street?
Initially, I was surprised by those news, but gave the benefit of the doubt - since this was a high profile case, possibly Gordon Brown supporting the Mccanns would also help him getting some public sympathy in Britain etc.
But now… when there are serious questions being asked about the conduct of this couple (in leaving 3 children unsupervised), when there is an ongoing investigation about their role in MAdelleine’s disappearance… I just don’t understand how the British government remains so dubiously involved in this affair.
Are these people interested in justice? Or are they interested that the mccanns are found innocent at all cost?
Once I read in a paper that this was after all the same government administration that in the dispute about the Iraq weapons of mass destruction allowed leaks and revealed sources that led to the suicide of a man whose only fault was saying what he thought. Why? Just because the government didn’t want to look bad in the picture. It looks like we’re back to the same principles in the Mccann case.

Agree with you foxngoose (76)… how could doctors actually leave their small children alone in the hotel rooms and one of them even reportedly ill!?? A very selfish choice. Holidaying abroad last Summer I wouldn’t let my kids out of sight for one moment. If the party consumed many bottles of wine, of course that must have affected the reactions and testimonies in so many ways. Oh I was just so pissed…
By the way, the bitch job of being a sniffer dog is a full time job - if you are very good at it. For instance, in my country one dog is ambulating throughout the country. Hm, not that we have such a high crime rate…

I bet you think the grandmother with the dog who killed her grandaughter was guity as hell and should have gone to jail too

127 Someone said the McCanns nanny suddenly went back to Canada. Anyone know any more about that?

I had to think about what you said there about class divisional thinking and mind-set, but I do know what you mean. I don’t think it is so much class division as an inner thing, which can happen in any class. I know people from the “upper” echelons who believe Kate is as guilty as sin, and some who don’t. No-one seems to think Gerry is but even the papers are saying that Kate’s “stiff upper lip” hasn’t helped her case at all. My own opinion is that she accidentally killed Maddie with an overdose of the sedative which she used regularly, because she got fed up with the kids being “hysterical ” and “hyperactive” ( her own words ) obviously interfered with the “me time” they both seem to value so highly, and she wouldn’t have a clue as to how kids behave at two and three years old because she is an only child herself and would not have grown up in the mayhem that is family life. What happened after that I don’t know but I still think Maddie is in water somewhere, still water, not the sea.

(128) Okay. I stand corrected. Didn’t see the earlier version.

I said it did say “paid leave” originally (check the Google cache) and then they changed it to “unpaid”.
search in Google for “gerry mccan paid leave” and the BBC site comes up with the quote.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:48 am
have any staff left shortly after that night?
did anyone check?
why isnt 80,000 being used to question every single holidaymaker, staff member and local again and again??????????
Why isnt any CTV coverage being displayed as a back up to the events before that night?
in most cases thats the thing the media focuses on
September 17th, 2007 at 10:48 am
Dear Kind British People,
Why isn’t a British diplomat in Portugal handling this situation rather than other gov’t officials which your tax dollars are (I would think) paying for the consultations, wine, tapas and Virgin airfare?
Just wondering
September 17th, 2007 at 10:48 am
(119) I wouldn’t argue with that. Just that Ian said that the BBC article says “paid leave” and it doesn’t.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:46 am
I know of british cops who get their friends to call them out to an “incident” a few minutes before the end of their shift, so they can then claim overtime pay.
i cant help but think maybe all those Portugese cops are longing it out to do the same and that really they know a lot more than they’ve leaked.
as the Police you would have unlimited access to everything - cctv camera footage, car hire records, mobile phone records, credit card transactions, forensic test results - and we know there’s a “4000 page” report on the Mccans.
Its like that jamaican police chief who was loving every minute of publicity when that cricket manager was alleged murdered (which later turned out, or was claimed to be, false).
September 17th, 2007 at 10:46 am
112 Seymour, interesting question…
I would consider myself of the same social class as the McCs and I’m strongly of the opinion that they are involved (accident or murder).
Then again I’m not British (although I lived there between age of 8 and 20.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:46 am
Why don’t you call your local doctors office and ask what a GPs responsiblities are regarding signing death certificates if you refuse to believe me. I do think I have offered valuable posts. But because they are not helping to support your claim of guilty then you feel your only option is to insult me. Sorry but I have the right to post and if this were a forum just about being a witchhunter (which it is beginning to look like) then I would not post at all but I thought this was suppose to be a healthy debate as most people keep claiming. A debate is impossible if everyone has the same opinion.
I do not believe that the McCanns killed their daughter. Do you think the Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa would suddenly quit if he felt the police had a air tight case against the McCanns. He would be delighted to stay in his role as official spokseman if this were the case at it would bring him career advancement, fame in his own circles, respect for solving the crime of the century etc . No instead he opts to do a runner to save his own butt just as Robin Cook chose to resign from Tony Blair’s cabinet as the build-up to war with Iraq gathered pace. Sousa knows more than any of us and he chose to quit…mmmmm wonder why??

if she fell down a hole down to their negligence they should be done for manslaughter
Surely it would have been the first thing they searched?
September 17th, 2007 at 10:45 am
unpaid leave my ass, when did their compassionate leave end?
September 17th, 2007 at 10:43 am
109. I know. But nothing seems to ring true in this case.
If the parents did, it how did they hide the body?
If an abductor did, it how did he know the kids were left alone in the apartment? He only had one week to latch on to the McCanns, how did he know that it would be worth stalking that family, and why wait so many days? The minute they hit the Tapas bar (even the 1st night they did it) he’d know he had at least five minutes to get Madeleine and get to his car or villa or whereever he took her.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:43 am
topper, the fell in hole theory is quite ligit, there were roadworks outside the apartment with a deep hole, this was filled in on 5th May, 2 days after she dispapeared, so it could be likely. I read that they were going to dig them up again to eliminate the possiblity
September 17th, 2007 at 10:43 am
Ian (90). The BBC link says “unpaid leave”:
“Mr McCann, a consultant cardiologist, is on unpaid leave and his wife has confirmed she does not yet plan to return to work as a locum doctor”.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:41 am
111. Well you can’t have someone being paid by the tax payer, work for someone who is currently being investigated by the tax payer. But Clarence Mitchell must be insane
September 17th, 2007 at 10:40 am
72 SSS,
Thank you for the dream info! Sorry I was making tea. I will have to see if anything manifests from that dream. It was a feeling of great love for this child but that more powerful people were going to take him. The numbers my husband is playing because I dreamt them several times and normally never have #’s.
That’s too bad about people not appreciating your talent. I know a few people who are the real deal and very gifted. The US is less receptive to metaphysics than in the UK I had always thought?
I am a total sceptic though. We used to watch Most Haunted and laugh our heads off.
I love Derek Acorah - he’s ridiculous imho but very entertaining if you don;t take him 1/2 as seriously as he takes himself.
