Madeleine McCann: Call Off The Dogs, Kate McCann’s Tears And Fatima
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns send to US for help against evidence of sniffer dogs.”
Gerry and Kate McCann have consulted lawyers working on behalf of Eugene Zapata in Madison, Wisconsin.
In October 1976, Zapata’s wife, Jeanette, went missing. Her body has never been found. Last year sniffer dogs were brought in and Zapata was charged with her murder. The case went before Judge Patrick Fielder who said the evidence – dogs had picked up the scent of a corpse in Zapata’s basement – was inadmissible. He said the dogs were unreliable.
The dogs have yet to make a comment.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY JUDGE: LET ME TELL ALL.”
Pedro Daniel dos Anjos Frias wants to “speak freely” about the case.
Pages 6 and 7: “Mum’s tears at 11am Mass.” Once again the Mirror is all eyes for Kate McCann’s eyes. She is crying.
In church, Father Keith Tomlinson narrates the parable of the Prodigal Son. An eight-year-old child called Molly Earp reads “Jesus please continue to love and protect us, until she is found.”
And then Jesus can have a rest and the police can resume normal duties…
Pages 8 and 9: “On the beach Gerry gave Maddy loads of hugs and kisses, he was a perfect dad..The next time I saw him was about midnight..I saw a man alone, desperate. He was crying and screaming her name over and over and over again.” Words from a “WAITER AT MADDIE’S LAST MEAL” before she vanished.
THE SUN front page: “Maddie ‘gag’ lift.” Friends of Kate and Gerry McCann are hopeful of being allowed to speak out and defend themselves. A judge has asked for a lifting of Portugal’s secrecy laws.
Pages 6 and 7: “AGONY TO COME.” The Sun produces a picture of Kate and Gerry McCann’s wedding day. They are holding Kate’s goddaughter Ellie. There is also a new picture of Madeleine McCann “looking angelic”. Have you seen her? Or are you watching the parents?
THE EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE. POLICE TO SEARCH SHRINE FOR BODY.” The McCanns went to Fatima. The McCanns car clocked up 1,709 miles in the fives weeks after their daughter went missing.
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER Pages 2 and 3: “Hand in hand, McCanns go to family church.” The “devoutly Catholic couple” are leaving for church from their “£600,000 home”. Kate McCann is carrying Cuddle Cat.
Pages 4 and 5: “1,000 letters each day in support of the McCanns. Between 500 and 1,000 letters a day arrive at the McCanns’ home. “There are some crank letters,” says a spokesman for the family, “but that’s inevitable.”
None of these letters are believed to point to the whereabouts of Madeleine McCann.
Alex Cayles, a former neighbour of the McCanns, says “I never heard Kate or Gerry raise their voices to their children or anyone else.” Can the same be said of any parents of three very young children?
DAILY MAIL front page: a picture of Kate McCann smiling.
“MADELEINE:
• Doubt cast on sniffer dogs
• Police frontman quits investigation
• Branson funds the McCanns’ defence
• Witness’s vital new evidence”
Pages 10 and 11:2 “Maddie: Is the case crumbling?”
Chief inspector Olegario Sousa has resigned “in disgust” at the way in which fellow Portuguese officers have been briefing the media behind his back.
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE MUM ON MURDER RAP. Now cops claim to have found ‘a motive’.”
The Star says police have read Kate McCann’s diary and “claim it reveals she had a motive to kill”.
Pages 4 and 5: “DID KATE HAVE A MOTIVE?”
Well, we haven’t read the diary, but…
“The idea that Portuguese detectives are looking at my daughter’s most personal thoughts and taking them out of context is terrible,” says Kate McCann’s father Brian Healy.
Pages 6 and 7: “HUNT AT HOLY SHRINE.” Is Madeleine McCann’s body buried at Fatima, one of the Catholic Church’s holiest sites? The Star says the couple went there three weeks after their daughter went missing.
We wonder. Is she? Or is she buried in Germany, America, London or Morocco, places also visited by the McCanns?
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “New allegations against McCanns - As the McCanns begin a new campaign to clear their names, further allegations emerged over the weekend.”
Oh?
“The hire car: The Renault Scenic hired by the McCanns 25 days after Madeleine went missing. New claims centre on its high mileage. Between May 27 and July 3, it was driven 1,700 miles, with police looking into the possibility that it may have been used to dispose of a body…There were also reports that detectives were waiting for permission from a judge to seize and dismantle the car to search for ‘traces of skin’.”
THE GUARDIAN: No Maddy news today.

paulette, not being confrontational but where could the McCanns look? The first few days the whole of Praia was out scouring eveywhere in the town; residents, holidaymakers, The mcCanns and group. The police had the dogs out the morning after she went and they were out there for nearly a week…. I can’t imagine what else they could do. Apparently there were over 300 ’sightings’ of her across Europe….. should they have gone to all of them? I can’t see it.
The jogging the next day, the tennis etc is all just rumour. It didn’t happen. The town was in chaos as everyone rushed around searching for her.
What else realistically?
(And yes I do know. I’ve been to Praia many times to stay at a friends villa nearby to the resort. Hence my interest in the case from the word Go. I’ve even eaten in the Tapas Bar shock horror! Yep, the public use it as well, not just holiday makers at the resort)

Afternoon all,
I’m from Portugal - and I do agree that our police is not the best in the world. But I don’t think it’s the worst either. Unlike some of you (who are certainly very well qualified to criticise the portuguese investigation), I prefer not to comment on the recent successes of british investigations.
In my country - despite what tabloid newspapers come up with (yep we also have tabloids - only in portugal they’re not the most read newspapers) - some believe that the Mccanns are innocent, some believe they are guilty.
Many don’t know, but believe that they are not telling everything they know about this case. And just about everyone does not understand why they left 3 children alone at home, and why they left Portugal the day after they were considered suspects of the case.
Whatever they believe in, the vast majority of people trust and hope that the competent courts will decide. It’s called the rule of law.
In Britain, media - and public opinion - face this issue as a football match between Portugal and England. Most media reflect the lack of interest by public opinion in understanding a different legal system and so carry on referring to “how things would have been different in Britain”.
It’s just about who wins and who loses.
The worrying element is not how public opinion and tabloid culture transformed a missing child story, into a battle between two camps rather than a battle for the truth. This could have been expected.
The worrying element is that in Britain, more than anywhere else politics follow the tune of public opinion, and generally political intervention in independent investigations tend to produce questionnable results. Let’s hope that’s not the case with MAdeleine.

They will only be proved innocent if M is found alive and well or if conclusive proof is found of what did happen to her-not proven guilty does not guarantee innocence and doubts will persist in many minds if this remains unsolved.
If they are involved and get away with it in legal terms they will surely be destroyed by the aftermath anyway. Eventually the reporters will move on and they will be left with whatever the truth is in their own hearts.

343 The McCanns were vowing something like a week before that they were staying, it was only when they suspected that they’d be made Ardguidos that they suddenly said they wer coming home. Of course it is possible that we are not readiing the same crummy reporting

334. Jon,
I’ve been in Italy for the past 2 months so the news I read has been mostly from Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Australian & US media. I find the UK press to be in the gutter over this (apologies if that offends anyone). Plus I am an American so sad ot say police corruption, coerced confessions, officials being concerned with image and profit etc….etc….are nothing mind blowing to me.
The priests words while touching - sorry I don’t trust religious people almost as much as I don’t trust the police.
All police should be approached warily not matter what culture or what country.
I still don’t think the McCanns are kosher. If they were they would be out day & night PHYSICALLY looking for Madeleine until their feet were bleeding. They would not be exploiting their daughter as a cult of personality which is what they are doing.
I hope I am wrong about the McCanns and I hope that Madeleine is found safe soon. The McCanns are not acting like a normal couple of a missing child. My gosh just read Gerry’s blog. It’s incredulous! They are NOT looking for her like parents with 1/10th their resources would be doing.
Sorry if my opinions are different to yours. Just my thoughts and again I really do hope I am wrong about them. Yet they leave a bitter taste in my mouth with how they’ve made this entire tragedy about them and not their daughter.

Is there a link that the pjs have they arent letting on?
are they just putting insignificant titbits on circumstantial evidence, giving the negative2 a false sense of security and with which enough rope to hang themselves?
Does anyone know if the mc canns searced for her physically at all?

75 oscuro says
“In fact the McCann’s contradict themselves all the time. Over “vowing” to stay in Portugal and keep ignoring their twins, or when declared suspects all of a sudden wanbt to go home in the interestss of the twins.”
This is completely untrue. The McCanns indicated their intention to return to the UK well before the PJ made them suspects and interviewed them.

Web user dies after three-day online binge
17 September 2007 at 06h45
Beijing - A man in southern China collapsed and died after a three-day marathon online session at a cybercafe, state media reported on Monday.
The web-user, estimated to be 30 years old, suddenly collapsed in front of his computer terminal in Guangdong province, and emergency personnel were unable to revive him, the Beijing News reported.
“According to preliminary findings, the length of time this man spent online might have triggered heart problems,” the paper quoted a local hospital emergency medic in the city of Zhongshan as saying.
The paper did not provide the man’s name or the online activities he was engaged in.
Worried about growing Internet addiction, China’s government has taken steps to combat the problem, including forcing online gaming sites to dock the points of gamers who stay online too long.

I wouldn’t say I have a particularly high IQ but I did pay my fee to MENSA and became a member in 1993 but don’t get too excited, I only did it to shut up someone who kept saying “…oh ! I thought you knew everything !! ” She doesn’t say that now !!

329 Close, impressed, close. Actually, the dogs smelt URINE on Skeletor cos she forgot to wash her hands after going to the toilet. Judge Pedro Daniel dos Anjos Frias has refused to ask the couple to return to Portimao and they will be questioned by police over here instead.
Skeletor has this to say regards Madeleine:
“The only thing I’ve ever be certain of in life is I’ve wanted to be a mum,” she told MccSSS(closefamilyfriend). “The first six months of Maddie’s life was very difficult”, because the little girl “had lots of colic and cried practically for 18 hours and day. I had to permanently carry her around.”
Mrs McCann explained that although the time was difficult it created a strong bond with Madeleine before the birth of the twins, Sean and Amelie, now 2.
“She accepted the twins’ arrival very well. She managed to deal perfectly with this new reality although she herself at the time was still a baby,” said Mrs McCann. “The worst thing is that she started to demand lots of attention, especially when I was breast feeding them. She’d run up and down screaming the background shouting for my attention.”

Paulette, David Rose is very prolific in crime writing. The bit about how the leaks were given puts alot of the stuff we read in the ‘trash’ component.
What about the investigating officer being himself involved in miscarraiges of justice.
The priest that K&G also attended spoke of the different personas painted by the media and how they actually reacted in private.
I feel very strongly that the Joana case should never ever been closed the way it was. There was insufficent evidence against the mother. So the PJ literally beat a confession out of her. Is this the trademark of a just society?
The babysitting conditions are one thing murder is another.
If there is no proof of Madeleines death then in no way should this case be denegrated from a missing persons case to a murder trial by media.
The reason I posted the above is that knowing David Roses work I am confident that it is well researched unlike alot of the other stuff that is printed.
