Madeleine McCann: Call Off The Dogs, Kate McCann’s Tears And Fatima
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns send to US for help against evidence of sniffer dogs.”
Gerry and Kate McCann have consulted lawyers working on behalf of Eugene Zapata in Madison, Wisconsin.
In October 1976, Zapata’s wife, Jeanette, went missing. Her body has never been found. Last year sniffer dogs were brought in and Zapata was charged with her murder. The case went before Judge Patrick Fielder who said the evidence – dogs had picked up the scent of a corpse in Zapata’s basement – was inadmissible. He said the dogs were unreliable.
The dogs have yet to make a comment.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY JUDGE: LET ME TELL ALL.”
Pedro Daniel dos Anjos Frias wants to “speak freely” about the case.
Pages 6 and 7: “Mum’s tears at 11am Mass.” Once again the Mirror is all eyes for Kate McCann’s eyes. She is crying.
In church, Father Keith Tomlinson narrates the parable of the Prodigal Son. An eight-year-old child called Molly Earp reads “Jesus please continue to love and protect us, until she is found.”
And then Jesus can have a rest and the police can resume normal duties…
Pages 8 and 9: “On the beach Gerry gave Maddy loads of hugs and kisses, he was a perfect dad..The next time I saw him was about midnight..I saw a man alone, desperate. He was crying and screaming her name over and over and over again.” Words from a “WAITER AT MADDIE’S LAST MEAL” before she vanished.
THE SUN front page: “Maddie ‘gag’ lift.” Friends of Kate and Gerry McCann are hopeful of being allowed to speak out and defend themselves. A judge has asked for a lifting of Portugal’s secrecy laws.
Pages 6 and 7: “AGONY TO COME.” The Sun produces a picture of Kate and Gerry McCann’s wedding day. They are holding Kate’s goddaughter Ellie. There is also a new picture of Madeleine McCann “looking angelic”. Have you seen her? Or are you watching the parents?
THE EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE. POLICE TO SEARCH SHRINE FOR BODY.” The McCanns went to Fatima. The McCanns car clocked up 1,709 miles in the fives weeks after their daughter went missing.
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER Pages 2 and 3: “Hand in hand, McCanns go to family church.” The “devoutly Catholic couple” are leaving for church from their “£600,000 home”. Kate McCann is carrying Cuddle Cat.
Pages 4 and 5: “1,000 letters each day in support of the McCanns. Between 500 and 1,000 letters a day arrive at the McCanns’ home. “There are some crank letters,” says a spokesman for the family, “but that’s inevitable.”
None of these letters are believed to point to the whereabouts of Madeleine McCann.
Alex Cayles, a former neighbour of the McCanns, says “I never heard Kate or Gerry raise their voices to their children or anyone else.” Can the same be said of any parents of three very young children?
DAILY MAIL front page: a picture of Kate McCann smiling.
“MADELEINE:
• Doubt cast on sniffer dogs
• Police frontman quits investigation
• Branson funds the McCanns’ defence
• Witness’s vital new evidence”
Pages 10 and 11:2 “Maddie: Is the case crumbling?”
Chief inspector Olegario Sousa has resigned “in disgust” at the way in which fellow Portuguese officers have been briefing the media behind his back.
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE MUM ON MURDER RAP. Now cops claim to have found ‘a motive’.”
The Star says police have read Kate McCann’s diary and “claim it reveals she had a motive to kill”.
Pages 4 and 5: “DID KATE HAVE A MOTIVE?”
Well, we haven’t read the diary, but…
“The idea that Portuguese detectives are looking at my daughter’s most personal thoughts and taking them out of context is terrible,” says Kate McCann’s father Brian Healy.
Pages 6 and 7: “HUNT AT HOLY SHRINE.” Is Madeleine McCann’s body buried at Fatima, one of the Catholic Church’s holiest sites? The Star says the couple went there three weeks after their daughter went missing.
We wonder. Is she? Or is she buried in Germany, America, London or Morocco, places also visited by the McCanns?
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “New allegations against McCanns - As the McCanns begin a new campaign to clear their names, further allegations emerged over the weekend.”
Oh?
“The hire car: The Renault Scenic hired by the McCanns 25 days after Madeleine went missing. New claims centre on its high mileage. Between May 27 and July 3, it was driven 1,700 miles, with police looking into the possibility that it may have been used to dispose of a body…There were also reports that detectives were waiting for permission from a judge to seize and dismantle the car to search for ‘traces of skin’.”
THE GUARDIAN: No Maddy news today.

What’s bewildering is when you read about someone who claims they saw Madeleine. For instance that girl in Belgium a couple of months ago.
If you see someone that looks like Madeleine (or any lost person for that matter), don’t walk away and tell someone later. Go up to the person and confront them. Better to have a moment of embarrassment than to let the missing person slip through the net.

379 SSS You are going to be very busy then, I see lots of gorgeous little girls all the time who remind me of Maddie, sadly none of them have ever been her. At least we will know who you are when you start doing it!
September 17th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
375 - Paulette - you are not a undercover officer. Morever, if the market is massive, and massively illegal, it would follow that the police are finding it tough going to infiltrate.
How would you find the market, or, more precisely, those who actually had the child you were looking for - Google?
September 17th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
355 I think that secrecy of justice laws are a good idea. We might catch more criminals and not have such a high crime rate if we had these laws ourselves.
September 17th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
376 - agreed Helsangel and “it” is probably closer to the mark
377 - I’d be looking for my kids just as aggressively SSS.
I hate that this case has me gripped. I was wondering why it is and it’s because I have 3 kids of my own and I dislike seeing any kind of parental neglect. My eldest is a week different in age to James Bulger so I related to that incident when it happened. I relate to the Madeleine case right now.
What I don’t relate to is the parenting skills of Kate and Gerry.
If new reports of Gerry being the perfect dad are true, then it maybe explains why the police focussed on Kate as being the one who perhaps inadvertently (or not) killed Madeleine. The public view of people is often far removed from what goes on behind closed doors. My ex-wife rejected my daughter when she was born and was openly hostile towards her. Ultimately it led to our divorce. But, nobody ever thought my ex-wife was anything other than a doting parent. It was only when everything came out in the open that people were shocked at the ex-wife’s rejection of our daughter.
Who really knows what Kate McCann is like behind closed doors? I’ve said it many times…she looks like she’s on anti-depressants because she has that monotone voice and the complete lack of any emotions. When you see older photos of her, she looks a completely different personality. I am certain there’s a different Kate to the one we see on telly.

377 ~ SSS…thank the lord….sss is back where he belongs…amongst his faithfull flock…. To any Mccann supporters out there…. paulette and sss make very valid points…. the truth is the mccanns fkd up on that fatefull night….. and they have done bugger all to redeem themselves since…. the rational sane ones amongst us….would not only leave no stoned unturned…. we’d rip the place apart with our bare hands….

371. The idea that the Doctors McCann should be wandering around Europe/the World call out Maddies name in the hope she will come running to them is a bit silly?
Seymour Laws, I politely disagree. I find it more silly that they have NOT done that. I believe only a pathetic sick narcissitic sociopath would givea damn he/she lmight look silly when trying to find their abducted child.
September 17th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
374 I bowed to your demands Impressed and quit!
Another thing, if I saw a child even REMOTELY like Madeleine Mccann, I wouldn’t hang around and wait for the police, I would IMMEDIATELY get hold of her and cause a scene the like of which has never been seen outside of the Old Vic.

I feel embarrassed everytime one of my fellow Brits goes abroad and gets into some kind of bother because it always results in the same kind of outcome. The press pillory the police or authorities in the foreign country and make out that everything should be done in the same way it is in Britain.
I hate that old-fashioned Imperialistic British view from the press and people in the UK who still think that way.
If you go to a foreign country, you expect them to do things their own way. Whether it is better or worse is irrelevant. If you don’t like the way other countries do things or you dislike a particular culture then don’t go there!
I’ve never been to Portugal but I feel like I have to go around apologising for the stupid comments some people are making about the Portuguese police and the citizens over there.
September 17th, 2007 at 1:46 pm
I have to agree with Paulette. Although there is no Worst Case Scenario Handbook to having your Child disappear (yet! There may be a gap in the market here!), I think any parent with an iota of parental love and care would NOT be sitting writing blogs, but rather out there, pounding the streets. The Pope be da*ned (I am not Catholic) and the Dalai Lama, Aga Khan and Archbishop Tutu can all join him……I wouldn’t be asking for photographs to be blessed if it was one of the Magnificent Seven (must be my age, the weekend memories are fading, they are Magnificent once again), no, I would be demanding entrance into every house in PdL ON THE NIGHT the child disappeared, and kicking in doors where this was refused. Yes kicking in doors. Because no f*cker is going to get hold of one of my kids and do God’s knows what to them.

373 It’s what he/she/it does best Stevo. After all floating a theory is hard, go with what you know, abuse everyone who does contribute
September 17th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
364. You better believe I would have the guile to do that to find a child being abused?! Are you mad? What’s so incredible about that - that’s exactly what undercover officers do.
You say you are in the market for a specific type & then you list exactly what you want. Child trafficking is massive. Do you really think the officials are going to arrest me knowing I am trying to find my own 3 year old daughter who has been kidnapped by paedophiles? Sorry I don’t by that at all.
And I said this is what I would do. I also said I would not pimp my daughter to the public and make a profit off of her. I’d stop spending money as I normally do. Sell my house and buy a smaller one. If kind-hearted people sent me money I would set up a CHARITY not a FOR PROFIT ENTERPRISE.
I also stated that the McCanns did not follow any of the many hundreds of leads of Madeleine sightings. Some as close as Spain and Morocco. One alleged sighting was made by a family acquiantance? Yet they still did not go?
NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOR OF PARENTS OF A MISSING CHILD WHO HAVE AMPLE RESOURCES

372 ~ SSS…. COME BACK we need you…now that clarence mccmitchell is on board full time we need all hands on desk…. mark my words… this mccmitchell guy…he’s no fool…. if you think that the team mccann pr has gone into over drive this weekend…..just you wait and see when mccmitchell gets to grips with it full time…. it will go into orbit and any of us who could suggest anything negative about mad mcgerry and his gorgeous wife… will, and i have no doubts, be getting a knock at the door and will be invited to the mcclibel courts…. be warned….

Thanks Impressed, or should I say MccImpressed (but have noticed you haven’t yet changed your name
naughty naughty)
Was at luncheon, or as the Higher Echelons say, nuncheon!
Just like to point out, that Clarence Mitchell is the SECOND official spokesperson, AFTER myself
September 17th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
364 Paulette - would you have the guile to infiltrate a ring of paedophiles - how would you pretend to be one? Produce pictures? What if you got arrested, the authorities may actually think you were a paeddphile and, what them
Now consider how much luck the Doctors McCann would have if they now tried to infiltrate a ring of paedophiles?
The idea that the Doctors McCann should be wandering around Europe/the World call out Maddies name in the hope she will come running to them is a bit silly?
September 17th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
I bet even Branston has respect for the amount of money they have made in such a short space of time, even he never thought it could be that easy.

it’s a cover for deflecting attention from the mccanns,
just like to 80 grand, spent only when enough people complained they were doing nothing.

As I have said before on this forum, I am horrified at the xenophobic attitude of our British media and Team McCann.
To me it is disgusting that they have sought to portray Portugal as some sort of 3rd world country. I think there will be a lot of red faces at red top tabloids when this is all done and dusted
September 17th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
sorry it was paynes mother
Im sure i read it last week it was his
my apologies for my mistake
apparently one of the negative9 had a 9 month old baby does anyone know if they were left alone too?
September 17th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
356. Then what’s the fund for? Why are we being told to ‘Look for Madeleine’ if there’s nowhere realistic to look?
September 17th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
356.
They received tips from people claiming to have spotted Madeleine but they never went to these locations - this doesn’t make any logical sense.
They can hire their own investigators probably some of the best in the world. Retired Scotland Yard officials. If Madeleine has been snatched by paedophiles then PI’s would have connections to these perps (I don’t mean in an illciit way).
If it were my child I would be travelling from country to country. I would pretend to be a paedophile myself to try & get in the inside so that I could find my child. Oh and while I’m at it I would save every exploited child I came across and I certainly would not be making my daughter’s disappearance a way to profit or gain fame or anything like what the McCanns are doing.
Sorry but those are my feelings. And I haven’t even ever seen any photos or read anything which suggests that they physically looked for her for any serious amount of time. I hope I am wrong about them. I don;t mind being wrong at all.
But there are a lot of very sick clever people out there. MAybe because I am American and have seen these stories before I find it very difficult to believe their abduction theory. However, I remain hopeful for Madeleine and even hopeful for the McCanns. In a way, if they are 100% innocent it might make me believe in people more again.
September 17th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
111 ~….so I did hear it correctly, my post at 111 seems tio be right…just spotted this…
It was confirmed today that Clarence Mitchell, a former senior BBC journalist, has been appointed as the McCanns’ official spokesman.
He was sent to Portugal by the Foreign Office as chief adviser to the McCanns shortly after their daughter was reported missing, before his return to the UK in June. Part of his new brief will involve studying the Portuguese press after concerns from the family about a series of negative newspaper reports
….ask yourself this….why does a well paid civil servant [effectivley with a job for life] give up his day job for this cause celeb…. there are some strange involvments in this case….
September 17th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Hi Paulette 320,
I too like a mystery, I just wish this one did not involve a missing child.
I can undersand why people thought the campaign site seemed strange but what does one do when a child goes missing. There is no ‘how to’ book on gettting your child back. God forbid if it were me, I don’t know what I would do. I think public attention for your child’s plight would be extremely helpful. In war torn countries when people are taken hostage campaigns are launched for their release. Perhaps the McCanns truly believed this could help. Unfortunately there is a double eldge sord involved regarding the media as they have the power to build you up and then spit you out. Or as the parents you could choose to remain quiet during a police investigation and let the police just do their job. But if your child goes missing in a foreign country that has no child rescue alert system in place or a child sex offender register in place and where the release of a police sketch of a suspect is not normal practise, then what do you do as a parent? I would find this extremely fustrating. Also what do you do when a secrecy law is in place and you as the parent are not allowed all information regarding your own child’s investigation. Many people criticise the McCanns for not hiring private detectives but if this is against the law while an official police investigation is going on, your hands are tied really in what you can actually achieve yourself. All you really can do is distribute posters, get as much info regarding missing children as possible, visit neighbouring countries etc. I know it is easy to criticise the parents because unfortunately they chose not to use the babysitter services on offer at the resort but I just can not logically see how they would have chosen to get rid of Madeleine’s body and then plan for the cover up. As I said earlier an accidental killing would carry a lighter sentence than hiding a body, disposing a body and then launching a massive cover up. This is why I go back to what might in my mind be more possible, the Chemello and Vaz connection.
Apparently their neighbours saw many children coming and going from their home. Some neighbours even claim to have seen one small boy for a period of time and then they never saw him again. Also there was a makeshift cot in the garage and Maddy’s pictures all over their computer. All of it does not make sense. Why would you attempt to extort money if you know that no money will be released until Madeleine is actually visibly returned. Chemello and Vaz do not strike me as stupid but they do strike me as dangerous criminals who don’t give a toss about children because they were quite happy to torture their own child.

No - not really, people expect you to be intelligent if they find out !! and I found out long ago that intelligence and common sense aren’t the same thing and joining MENSA was a real revelation in that it was a bit like going on to a film set, it’s all glitz, glamour and mystery on the outside but behind the scenes it’s all struts and cardboard
