Madeleine McCann: Call Off The Dogs, Kate McCann’s Tears And Fatima
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns send to US for help against evidence of sniffer dogs.”
Gerry and Kate McCann have consulted lawyers working on behalf of Eugene Zapata in Madison, Wisconsin.
In October 1976, Zapata’s wife, Jeanette, went missing. Her body has never been found. Last year sniffer dogs were brought in and Zapata was charged with her murder. The case went before Judge Patrick Fielder who said the evidence – dogs had picked up the scent of a corpse in Zapata’s basement – was inadmissible. He said the dogs were unreliable.
The dogs have yet to make a comment.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY JUDGE: LET ME TELL ALL.”
Pedro Daniel dos Anjos Frias wants to “speak freely” about the case.
Pages 6 and 7: “Mum’s tears at 11am Mass.” Once again the Mirror is all eyes for Kate McCann’s eyes. She is crying.
In church, Father Keith Tomlinson narrates the parable of the Prodigal Son. An eight-year-old child called Molly Earp reads “Jesus please continue to love and protect us, until she is found.”
And then Jesus can have a rest and the police can resume normal duties…
Pages 8 and 9: “On the beach Gerry gave Maddy loads of hugs and kisses, he was a perfect dad..The next time I saw him was about midnight..I saw a man alone, desperate. He was crying and screaming her name over and over and over again.” Words from a “WAITER AT MADDIE’S LAST MEAL” before she vanished.
THE SUN front page: “Maddie ‘gag’ lift.” Friends of Kate and Gerry McCann are hopeful of being allowed to speak out and defend themselves. A judge has asked for a lifting of Portugal’s secrecy laws.
Pages 6 and 7: “AGONY TO COME.” The Sun produces a picture of Kate and Gerry McCann’s wedding day. They are holding Kate’s goddaughter Ellie. There is also a new picture of Madeleine McCann “looking angelic”. Have you seen her? Or are you watching the parents?
THE EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE. POLICE TO SEARCH SHRINE FOR BODY.” The McCanns went to Fatima. The McCanns car clocked up 1,709 miles in the fives weeks after their daughter went missing.
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER Pages 2 and 3: “Hand in hand, McCanns go to family church.” The “devoutly Catholic couple” are leaving for church from their “£600,000 home”. Kate McCann is carrying Cuddle Cat.
Pages 4 and 5: “1,000 letters each day in support of the McCanns. Between 500 and 1,000 letters a day arrive at the McCanns’ home. “There are some crank letters,” says a spokesman for the family, “but that’s inevitable.”
None of these letters are believed to point to the whereabouts of Madeleine McCann.
Alex Cayles, a former neighbour of the McCanns, says “I never heard Kate or Gerry raise their voices to their children or anyone else.” Can the same be said of any parents of three very young children?
DAILY MAIL front page: a picture of Kate McCann smiling.
“MADELEINE:
• Doubt cast on sniffer dogs
• Police frontman quits investigation
• Branson funds the McCanns’ defence
• Witness’s vital new evidence”
Pages 10 and 11:2 “Maddie: Is the case crumbling?”
Chief inspector Olegario Sousa has resigned “in disgust” at the way in which fellow Portuguese officers have been briefing the media behind his back.
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE MUM ON MURDER RAP. Now cops claim to have found ‘a motive’.”
The Star says police have read Kate McCann’s diary and “claim it reveals she had a motive to kill”.
Pages 4 and 5: “DID KATE HAVE A MOTIVE?”
Well, we haven’t read the diary, but…
“The idea that Portuguese detectives are looking at my daughter’s most personal thoughts and taking them out of context is terrible,” says Kate McCann’s father Brian Healy.
Pages 6 and 7: “HUNT AT HOLY SHRINE.” Is Madeleine McCann’s body buried at Fatima, one of the Catholic Church’s holiest sites? The Star says the couple went there three weeks after their daughter went missing.
We wonder. Is she? Or is she buried in Germany, America, London or Morocco, places also visited by the McCanns?
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “New allegations against McCanns - As the McCanns begin a new campaign to clear their names, further allegations emerged over the weekend.”
Oh?
“The hire car: The Renault Scenic hired by the McCanns 25 days after Madeleine went missing. New claims centre on its high mileage. Between May 27 and July 3, it was driven 1,700 miles, with police looking into the possibility that it may have been used to dispose of a body…There were also reports that detectives were waiting for permission from a judge to seize and dismantle the car to search for ‘traces of skin’.”
THE GUARDIAN: No Maddy news today.

Folks, I’ve resigned from my functions at the PJ to come and join the Anorak blog. Much more interesting here and at least I get first-hand reliable information.

One things for sure, if (big IF) it ends up being true that they moved the body 25 days after the disappearance, right under the noses of all the British investigative journalists who were camped out in PdL, then there were a large number of hacks who were doing a crap job while filling out their expense reports in the sun.

Actually Helsangel,
All GPs have to be present when someone has recently passed to write a death certificate. My cousin is a GP and this is part of her job. Her practise alone deals with over a 1000 patients. Most of the times they have to visit homes were terminally ill children or the elderly have just passed away, and most GPs have to be part of rotating team who are on call at hospitals. So yes they do witness death many times in their line of work.
Kate McCann works part-time and she had stated that she had to be present in a number of deaths at her job leading up to her holidays. To sit here and argue about her days of work and the number of deaths she dealt with on her job is absolutely speculation on everyones part. If you people are unaware of what GPs responsiblities with regards to their patients then really you sould keep quiet because your comments are uninformed to say the least.

Today the Daily Mail said that it was us bloggers that were making the McCanns life hell with our sick comments.
Not Madeleine being missing, not the non-stop press coverage, not the PJs - us!

Ben, i’m sure whatever happens many people will be wrong. Especially because a lot of people have been taking sides (for or against the Mccanns) based on speculation. The police has not charged the Mccanns with any crime (and people often seem to forget that).
The most important thing is that police and judiciary especially don’t let this “media contest” between who’s right and who’s wrong get on the way of finding out what happened to Madeleine.

Perhaps this is one of those situations whereby it is only later when you remembr something that someone said to you and it strikes you as suspicious?
Perhaps we are too suspicious!!

(43) SSS, the “vital new evidence” appears to refer to the person GM was chatting to. I can’t even begin to think what he might say (or how he might have been persuaded to say it) after 4 months have passed.

” Wow! They must have some extremely primative funerals in Praia da luz? Not like the modern ones conducted on the moors of Manchester. Brilliant deduction Seymour Law!”
One assumes that burials in Portugal are much like burials here - a body in a placed in a coffin, the coffin is then finds its way into the Church for the funeral, or have I misunderstood how it works.

Could this vital new evidence be something to do with that other apartment that was searched?
September 17th, 2007 at 9:46 am
(36) “perception is reality”. But it isn’t really, is it?

I went to a website, the link to which was posted on this forum, about this guy who had these dreams about people. Now he had dreams about Madeleine, and I too get, not dreams, but feelings. For example, I never enter the Euromillions, but on Friday, I did, and I just had this feeling about it, and I won £10. Well, the next day, I was on this forum reading the round up and looking at the websites of the various papers, and I just had a feeling that she was on a boat, and it would be Day 150 that held the key, and when I think about it, the feeling comes back. Its like a feeling in my stomach.
When any of the kids are in trouble, I get a bad feeling and see which one it is in my mind.
A few years back, I had a bad feeling about my bro in law and I told my sis and she said I hate your feelings, and next day, on his way to work, he was knocked off his bike and the guy who did it, then reversed his car and ran his bike over.
Like I said, I know I sound like a lunatic!

Some more questions that have been arising (disclaimler: but that do not suggest in any way that they are at all involved in Madeleine’s disappearance):
I read today that there were 2 people entitled to drive the car: Gerry Mccann and Kate’s brother (why not Kate?). Did the press follow the car when they were travelling to the Vatican or Gerry was in his world tour? Who was driving the car then?
Who is this witness that is now coming forward with “vital new evidence”? It sounds like the “vital new evidence” is that this bloke was chatting with Gerry for 15 minutes outside the appartment. Why is this vital new evidence? evidence of what exactly? And why has this “vital new evidence” not been given to police 4 months ago?
Why are the Mccanns launching an advertising campaign 4 months after their daughter went missing? And why in Portugal and Spain? After 4 months, if Madeleine was kidnapped it would appear absurd that the kidnapper was still holding her in either of the two countries where the case is more high profile. If they see so many problems with the portuguese investigators why don’t they hire private investigators? As long as they do not interfere with the police investigation there’s noting in the law stopping a UK-based fund to hire experts to investigate a disappearance in Portugal.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:45 am
i mean even the british police apparently think the pg evidence is unbelievably bad
September 17th, 2007 at 9:44 am
32 i wasnt directly calling anyone a fool i was just coming off the back of people saying richard branson will look a fool.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:44 am
33 Well talking of shrines, has anyone checked beneath Gerry’s mirror?
September 17th, 2007 at 9:44 am
Just reposting from other thread;
My sense this week-end was that PR is being managed much more slickly;
- “The Great and The Good” (sic) running to help pay for “tortured” McCs’ legal fees
- Replacement of spokesthingy (who looked amateurish)
- No more whingeing from GMcC
- Witnesses coming out of the woodwork months after the event to give alibis
- Scooby Doo’s credibility being questioned
- PJ all corrupt thugs beating up mothers
- Return of “Photo Mystery Man”
- Phylo Pastry is suddenly quiet
They’re really firing on all cylinders…..and appear to have regained the initiative.
Remember now……. “perception is reality”.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:43 am
(32) I agree. Nobody WANTS them to be guilty. But they have done so many unlikely things that it’s difficult to think they aren’t hiding something.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:43 am
MO has changed again, sorry, but I dont think Kate or gerry had anything to do with this disapearance, I think she was genuinely abducted and I think Murat still has something to do with it. So Richard Bransons money will be well spent
September 17th, 2007 at 9:41 am
(29) I imagine that homed in on Fátima because it’s in Portugal. They could have gone by car.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:40 am
24 You are right, we do not know that much. But I shan’t feel a fool if I’m proved wrong, I’ll be relieved for Sean and Amelie
September 17th, 2007 at 9:40 am
Also just a thought,
As a mum when i cut my small childrens hair i used to keep a lock for a keepsake and put it in a box along with their teeth etc……..
Was this kates big mistake?
did she keep some to put in her box when she got back to blighty
The funeral parlour gave my siblings and i a lock of my mums to keep.
I put mine in a doll so i could cuddle it when i felt low
“Cuddle cat here kitty cuddle cat!!”
Or are you a brand spanky new one from ebay parcel forced over once Gerry realised!!
just a thought!
September 17th, 2007 at 9:40 am
What I recall reading about the nanny was that she accompanied them to PdL and then left suddenly for Canada (which, I believe, was where she was from).
September 17th, 2007 at 9:39 am
19 - Fortunately not, my week long trial settled a few minutes ago - so I get paid without the tedium of actually going to Court - can now get started and some renumerative paper work
I thought that the point of this site was to concentrate on the self-serving and plain unreliable nature of our Tabloid Press - yet the opposite seems to have occcured - each unsupported rumour is latched on to as if proven fact
I liked the one in the Express? about the body having been buried at some important shrine or other - why not the Vatican? Iti is a large enough place to bury a small body and they did go by private jet - have the sniffer dogs had a go at the private jet. If not why not
September 17th, 2007 at 9:38 am
The Spanish government has just started a radio/TV campaign against leaving small children on their own (so that they don’t have accidents, of course, not because they are in imminent danger of being abducted). Perhaps the British government would like to follow suit.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:38 am
21. I’m sincerely curious. What makes you say day 150 and alive? (Truly hope you’re right even though I am highly sceptical of the McCanns.) I mean do you have prescient dreams or something like that?
September 17th, 2007 at 9:37 am
The news of the police feeding the press misinformation was annoying, but to be expected I think in view of the nature of the investigation.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:37 am
22 SSS Well I heard mention of a Nanny but after a bit I thought the Nanny was in a brown glass jar with a label on it. It is strange that she’s disappeared too
September 17th, 2007 at 9:35 am
morning,
we all have to remember if they are innocent a lot of people wil look like fools,
not just richard branson if they are guilty.
nobody really knows anything apart from trash.
