Madeleine McCann: Call Off The Dogs, Kate McCann’s Tears And Fatima
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns send to US for help against evidence of sniffer dogs.”
Gerry and Kate McCann have consulted lawyers working on behalf of Eugene Zapata in Madison, Wisconsin.
In October 1976, Zapata’s wife, Jeanette, went missing. Her body has never been found. Last year sniffer dogs were brought in and Zapata was charged with her murder. The case went before Judge Patrick Fielder who said the evidence – dogs had picked up the scent of a corpse in Zapata’s basement – was inadmissible. He said the dogs were unreliable.
The dogs have yet to make a comment.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY JUDGE: LET ME TELL ALL.”
Pedro Daniel dos Anjos Frias wants to “speak freely” about the case.
Pages 6 and 7: “Mum’s tears at 11am Mass.” Once again the Mirror is all eyes for Kate McCann’s eyes. She is crying.
In church, Father Keith Tomlinson narrates the parable of the Prodigal Son. An eight-year-old child called Molly Earp reads “Jesus please continue to love and protect us, until she is found.”
And then Jesus can have a rest and the police can resume normal duties…
Pages 8 and 9: “On the beach Gerry gave Maddy loads of hugs and kisses, he was a perfect dad..The next time I saw him was about midnight..I saw a man alone, desperate. He was crying and screaming her name over and over and over again.” Words from a “WAITER AT MADDIE’S LAST MEAL” before she vanished.
THE SUN front page: “Maddie ‘gag’ lift.” Friends of Kate and Gerry McCann are hopeful of being allowed to speak out and defend themselves. A judge has asked for a lifting of Portugal’s secrecy laws.
Pages 6 and 7: “AGONY TO COME.” The Sun produces a picture of Kate and Gerry McCann’s wedding day. They are holding Kate’s goddaughter Ellie. There is also a new picture of Madeleine McCann “looking angelic”. Have you seen her? Or are you watching the parents?
THE EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE. POLICE TO SEARCH SHRINE FOR BODY.” The McCanns went to Fatima. The McCanns car clocked up 1,709 miles in the fives weeks after their daughter went missing.
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER Pages 2 and 3: “Hand in hand, McCanns go to family church.” The “devoutly Catholic couple” are leaving for church from their “£600,000 home”. Kate McCann is carrying Cuddle Cat.
Pages 4 and 5: “1,000 letters each day in support of the McCanns. Between 500 and 1,000 letters a day arrive at the McCanns’ home. “There are some crank letters,” says a spokesman for the family, “but that’s inevitable.”
None of these letters are believed to point to the whereabouts of Madeleine McCann.
Alex Cayles, a former neighbour of the McCanns, says “I never heard Kate or Gerry raise their voices to their children or anyone else.” Can the same be said of any parents of three very young children?
DAILY MAIL front page: a picture of Kate McCann smiling.
“MADELEINE:
• Doubt cast on sniffer dogs
• Police frontman quits investigation
• Branson funds the McCanns’ defence
• Witness’s vital new evidence”
Pages 10 and 11:2 “Maddie: Is the case crumbling?”
Chief inspector Olegario Sousa has resigned “in disgust” at the way in which fellow Portuguese officers have been briefing the media behind his back.
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE MUM ON MURDER RAP. Now cops claim to have found ‘a motive’.”
The Star says police have read Kate McCann’s diary and “claim it reveals she had a motive to kill”.
Pages 4 and 5: “DID KATE HAVE A MOTIVE?”
Well, we haven’t read the diary, but…
“The idea that Portuguese detectives are looking at my daughter’s most personal thoughts and taking them out of context is terrible,” says Kate McCann’s father Brian Healy.
Pages 6 and 7: “HUNT AT HOLY SHRINE.” Is Madeleine McCann’s body buried at Fatima, one of the Catholic Church’s holiest sites? The Star says the couple went there three weeks after their daughter went missing.
We wonder. Is she? Or is she buried in Germany, America, London or Morocco, places also visited by the McCanns?
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “New allegations against McCanns - As the McCanns begin a new campaign to clear their names, further allegations emerged over the weekend.”
Oh?
“The hire car: The Renault Scenic hired by the McCanns 25 days after Madeleine went missing. New claims centre on its high mileage. Between May 27 and July 3, it was driven 1,700 miles, with police looking into the possibility that it may have been used to dispose of a body…There were also reports that detectives were waiting for permission from a judge to seize and dismantle the car to search for ‘traces of skin’.”
THE GUARDIAN: No Maddy news today.

“what if she simply walked out and fell down those steps and cracked her head open/died?”
Interesting. Would the threat of that alone being known be enough to motivate the body-hiding cover up. I dunno - maybe just about.
Oldfield directly responsible, drunkenly failing to reclose the outside door. McCanns indirectly through the neglect. Yes perhaps.
That would I think be an error of judgement. But they would have very little time to decide what to do, and their judgement would be warped by alcohol.
Once the body was hidden by the three of them (while intoxicated), there would be no way back, even when sober and regretful at such folly.
Yes - it’s a theory that just might work, and admirably simple in that it doesn’t even need medical malpractice to explain the hiding. Makes it perhaps the most probable explanation I have heard, depending only on what we know for certain (the neglect) and an intoxicated person leaving a door open.
Even easier to do if you are distracted as you leave - did he claim to speak to someone as he left, maybe from the top of the steps as he stood by the still open door.
So, so simple. And just (by the skin of its teeth) enough to explain the stupid body-hiding by people with alcohol impaired judgement.
Could you get brain damage without leaving blood etc all over the steps ? My guess is yes. Think of boxers.

While other have been going on and on about hair and the smell of death I have refuted it as evidence. How can that hardly lend any credence, substance or accuracy to my posts.
I’ve said from day one, that the important issue is the time line. Beginning from when the picked Madeleine up from the friends house. In order to know what happened to Madeline the event of the evening have to be established. That will be the first step to determining if Madeline was even in the apartment.
This is based on the fact that there is no report of Madeleine being with the McCanns when the collected the twins after leaving the cafe around 6.30pm. Surely someone from the creche would have mentioned seeing her.
Then there is the fact that O’Brien is reported to have listened at the door rather than go in. Why?
A reliable friend would go in to ensure the children had no had an accident, been sick, or were awake.
If O’Brien had gone in and Madeleine wasn’t in the apartment he would have had to have rasied the alarm far sooner.
We only have GM’s word for it that Madeleine was in the apartment when he checked at 9.10pm.
Finally as we know, Madeleine wasn’t in the artment when KM checked at 10.00pm

But then I love my dog and wouldn’t be so negligent. (To continue on my earlier musing above.)
When I lived in Australia and visited the UK I had to leave her in a kennels…. sniff. It was an excellent facility though. There was a perimeter fence which was locked of course. And each dog had a run which was locked and was itself within another locked block. So three locks in all. Between my dependent and any outside dangers. And the staff of course to look after her. I still worried of course.

Good to see us sniffer dogs getting a good write-up today on TV after the scurrilous libel levelled against us by those b’stards McCann. They know they can’t deceive the dogs… See next time, I’m biting him!

Over here in the USA, people have enough missing children to worry about so the Madeleine case is nothing over here. But they did give Gerry a hard time when he came over here with interviews concentrating on why he left kids alone that night. That’s probably why he hasn’t looked to publicity over here anymore.

ian willis, below your picture in the link you supplied, there are some reader comments.
jesus wept, how many posts did they have to trawl to find these pathetic samples?

749 John…………..Why is ITV putting on this programme before the investigating judge has made an opinion on the evidence?
To try to stop any further investigation into McCann’s version of events, to discredit the PJ and all the GBP doubters and silence basically anyone who does nto believe they are whiter than the driven snow and innocent of any fault including that of neglecting kids.To manipulate the PJ into never charging the parents, and to swing public opinion.
All of which after all this time is in my opinion…PR Overkill…..they are suspects only.. they have not been charged, let alone found guilty, of anything…. why are they creating such a bloody storm over things.?

Surely there were others apart from the Negligent Nine?

How does the saying go? “The show aint over until the fat lady’s sung”? Oh no, I don’t think I could bear to hear Aunty Phil singing ……

793 Ian - no that does not look like the face of a man who has lost a daughter. Neither did the pictures of the McMs out and about in Morocco doing handshakes and smiles look like a distraught couple. But worse than this is the fact that they could actually do any trips like this in their situation. I could not leave the place that my dog went missing if I lost her. I know I couldn’t.

Yep, agree with you. I like the pictures of him after being interviewed as an arguido - he has a right smack-arse face in those.

What DOES disturb me about this evenings programme, is that, irrespective of whether or not you consider ITV to be tabloid slanted or NOT; the ‘Tonight Team’ are an excellent, factual and superlative Investigative team that have produced many award winning documentaries. That they have rolled over like SKY and the BEEB, and basically re-hashed all the crappy Pro-McCann trash that has been churned out by the Murdoch Media intimates the level and intensity of corruption and pressure being effected.

September 17th, 2007 at 9:10 pm
I am confused. The blessed McCanns are innocent and so devoted and holy. Surely then God will protect them and help us all to see the truth and the light - and there is no need for expensive lawyers and PR? Amen.

Yep…all you say could happen. I’d not rule out anything like that after seeing the way justice seems to work these days. Look at OJ Simpson over here. His story is the breaking news here right now but I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets off or is released again.

or does it look like a smug f***wit who’s conned his way into the white house

781 Slyfox - very good point re CM being a safe pair of hands, and the McCanns being seen to be getting a fair trial. CPS lawyers are after all, gearing up for a murder prosecution if the manslaugher prosecution fails in Portugal.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:08 pm
781 ~ slyfox…..if i were sitting in team mccann i’d be sitting there tonight with a bottle of wine thinking that today has been a good day….mitchell is working his magic….. mitchell is the man….

Isn’t the whole McCann story so “perfect”?
Hey look people….our daughter is missing because we left her alone in the room while we were out boozing, someone MUST have abducted her because that’s the only possible explanation, we’re both devout Catholics so that is in our favour because it helps us in our grief, and to top it off, we’re good business people who can raise millions and travel to see famous heads of state!
Yeah right….!!!
impressed
What an arrogant wanker!

Why is anyone bothering to watch ITV..that is as bad as reading tabloids and Daily Snail….loaded with Murdoch media cliches’s. All they will do is cuss and damn the Police in Portugal as if they entire force are nothing more than village idiots from the third world.. or would it be 4th world order
I am thinking that this show is all but over…the pressure brought to bear will end with PJ dropping it and the McCanns will make several million bucks selling a book having a movie blockbuster made. Madeline will never be found and we will never know what really happened.
And their and their team will all be a tad ££ richer. And the local media will sigh and feel smugly proud they stood by them in their darkest hour etc…..
And the next British child that goes missing is going to be a real problem after all this, now that the global public is mostly sitting with one eye squinted in disbelief, of what excatly ,we know not..it just does not seem right..everything about this has been wrong since 3rd May..we know not why ,or how, and after the PR has wrapped this in next few days ,we never will know for sure why. Bizarre.

There’s a decent set of steps from the apartment where a toddler could quite easily fall and hurt themselves on all that concrete. I’m assuming it was dark at the time she went missing so what if she simply walked out and fell down those steps and cracked her head open/died?

JUDGE DREAD 774;
I’m glad you enjoyed the programme, and I’m glad your Posts have been confirmed. I wouldn’t get excited about taking too much credit though. There’s a score of reports and programmes in every British Newspaper and on every British TV channel that “confirms your posts”. Given that your posts run along the same lines as all the other McCann spin, that hardly lends any credence, substance or accuracy to your posts.

I know…a blatant lie. Like I said before, why play it down if you messed up? It’s nothing like having a few drinks in your back garden at all. Now, if the whole complex was a gated community then fair enough, I’d be inclined to think more along those lines but the kids may have been a mile away.

I’m not sure Mitchel isn’t such a bad choice, from both the media and UK government perspective.
KM seems quite happy to throw insults around, particularly at the Portuguese - remember “won’t be bullied”, “I’m being framed”, “blackmailed into confessing”.
They’re also playing a dangerous game with the media. A lot of people could end up with egg on their face.
Plus there is a real danger of the trial being prejudiced from all the negative coverage.
Maybe we need some postive fluff so that if it does go to trial, no-one can argue that they’ve been found guilty in the press.
Maybe Mitchell will be a safe pair of hands, for all concerned…
Just a hunch.

Speaking on ABC’s Good Morning America, the heart consultant said: “We were dining 50 yards away and we could see the apartment from where we were. It’s like we were sat in our back garden, all be it at the end of our garden”
what a lying b’stard! you cannot see the apartment from the bar, not in any circumstances:
