Madeleine McCann: Clarence Mitchell Speaks, Make Madeleine History And Breastfeeding
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MAIL pages 10 and 11: “Madeleine cried for 18 hours a day. Kate tells of the special bond forged in the painful days of early childhood.”
Kate McCann is speaking with Portuguese magazine Flash!. This interview took place before Kate McCann was named as a suspect in Madeline’s disappearance. Kate says the first six months with Madeleine were “very difficult”. Madeleine had colic. “I had to carry her around permanently,” says Kate.
What does it mean, this interview that has “emerged”? That what you tell magazines can be taken out of context and used in evidence against you, or something else?
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns go straight to the top in search for powerful backers.”
Gordon Brown is being kept abreast of the investigation on Kate and Gerry McCann, possibly by reading the British press and watching the news bulletins.
(Is any MP still wearing a yellow ribbon?)
The McCanns have a new spokesman. He’s called Clarence Mitchell. He resigned as head of the Government’s Media Monitoring unit to take this new post.
Mr Mitchell once offered: “There’s a whole level of debate taking place online which simply didn’t exist before and departments feel they need to be fully engaged in that.”
Look out for Kate’s blog.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “THE TIDE TURNS.”
“McCanns WON’T be ordered back to Portugal says Judge”
“Gordon Brown briefed on the case”
“New spokesman will declare Gerry and Kate innocent today”
Clarence Mitchell says: “They have nothing whatever to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.” And as the McCann’s new spokesman he should know.
Pages 4 and 5: “RAY OF HOPE.”
Madeleine has not been found but Kate and Gerry McCann will not have to fly back to Portugal for more questioning.
On the downside sales of the “Look for Madeleine” wristband are not going well in Portugal. In “LOCALS REJECTS ‘FIND HER’ BRACELETS,” this year’s Make Poverty History band is being turned down at a car boot sales in Praia da Luz.
Says one ex-pat: “It’s as if they want to forget something so horrible happened.” Or buy something less with their money?
Says another: “We can’t understand how they can carry on jogging after losing Madeleine. Gerry went to a hairdressers a few weeks after she disappeared and continued tennis lessons. The Portuguese feel they should b hysterical.” But not the British, who understand reserve…
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE COPS SLAPPED DOWN. KATE BACKED BY JUDGE. Mum won’t be hauled back to Portugal.”
Judge Pedro Anjos Frias rejected Portuguese police calls for the McCanns to return. “He is thought to have ruled the case to flimsy to justify the move.” Or, to put it another way, he has not received sufficient evidence to be convinced of the need for a trial.
Pages 4 and 5: “COPS CASE COLLAPSING.”
And: “McCanns tell Brown: We have solid defence.” Gordon Brown’s reaction to this news is not known.
THE INDEPENDENT page 32: Thomas Sutcliffe says the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been “yoked by journalists to another kind of story – the primal faction of fairytale”. Here “the beautiful child is swallowed by something that has emerged from the dark”.
It is, is it not, every child’s worst nightmare.
Page 4: “Kate McCann ‘will not be reinterviewed in Portugal’.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE POLICE CASE FALLS APART.”
“Judge refuses to recall the McCanns”
“Impossible to detect sedatives in hair”
“But slurs against the parents continue”
Slurs?
Pages 8 and 9: “My struggles to control Madeleine – BY KATE MCCANN.”
As told to Flash! magazine. The twins arrive. “The worst thing is that she started to demand lots of attention, especially when I was breastfeeding them.”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE ALL SEVEN McCANN PALS IN FRAME.” The seven dwarves, to continue Mr Sutcliffe’s analogy?
“Cops set to name them as suspects.”
Pages 6 and 7: “BRIT PALS ALL SUSPECTS.”
The Tapas 9 are in the frame. This will put the lid – the tapas – on the case. Right?
“Maddie cops jet to UK as group face grilling” – Portuguese police are “planning” to come to the UK to continue the investigation. British police will conduct interviews.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 8: “McCanns to be interviewed by British police.”
Kate and Gerry are also keen to reach Gordon Brown. A source tell the paper: “The McCanns do not expect help or influence to be exerted on their behalf but want to get messages to the very top that they are innocent.”
Does Brown read the Telegraph?
THE GUARDIAN page 35: “Never mind the high street: Branson sells his Virgin Megastores.”
No mention of Madeleine McCann, granted, but this news one day after Branson pledged to help the parents clear their names looks like interesting timing?

What do you suggest that the Mccanns could be doing to look for their daughter. They have organised a world wide campaign!!! Do you expect them to go door to door around the world???
September 20th, 2007 at 1:12 am
1029 - 1031 - noonethere.
As in Knock, Knock. who’s there? No one’s there. As in the lights are on but no one is there. As in there are endless variations on this idea. But the end result is always the same. There is noonethere. An empty suit comes to mind.
So - if you don’t mind, can you please shut up??!! You’re really a drag. As in a BOAR. As in BORING!!!
And stop commenting if you don’t want to get it right back. But maybe you do?!
Forget it - Don’t talk to me anymore. You’re making me ill.

Maria,
I have not made up my mind and have said many times on this forum that I hope the McCanns are innocent.
I’ve worked in child welfare and have learned the hard way that the most charming affluent people can be the most deceptive.
Anyway, I still hope I am wrong but their words and actions and the statistics on child abductions by a stranger all feel funny to me in this case.
IT sounds to me as if you’ve made up your mind absolutely and seem to believe that the news you are privvy to is special in some way and not speculation.
We are all speculating. And my prediction is that Madeleine will never be found (at least not for the next 10 years or so). THe McCanns will not be found guilty of anything. The McCanns will make a lot of money off of their Madeleine website, movie and book deals. They will eventually divorce.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:53 am
Paulette,
I hope the police ARE looking for Madeleine but I meant that they should not have abandoned looking for her alive. I know very well that the child is probably dead, whoever took her, but she MAY be alive. This seems to be the hope being clung to by the McCanns.
You are right. I have no evidence that the police are NOT looking for her but it seems their focus is very much on the parents as suspects. (Of course, they should have had this focus from day one as it is usually a family member who is involved in such a cse. What it ludicrous is that they are doing this investigation of the parents NOW, so long after the event and when reliable evidence is almost impossible to come by. If anyone replies that the police DID suspect them from the start, then why on earth did they not do all the forensic tests early AND keep a close eye on their car to ensure that it wasn’t used for any nefarious purpose, either by the McCanns or any of their friends or family members? Or maybe the body was cleverly moved during siesta time or in the night…..when there are no police people on duty????!?)
The police did not have a proper focus on looking for Madeleine alive even at the beginning. Why did they not issue a description of the pyjamas, for example? Why did the McCanns have to organise this themselves? Why did the police not organise the appeal to the abductor which normally takes place in these cases? The McCanns had to organise this themselves.
Either way, the police do not seem to have a clear line of investigation.
The American experience seems to show that massive and sustained publicity gives at least the best chance of success in finding a missing child. I assume that’s why they are launching this new publicity now.
Of course, they could start digging themselves and doing house-to-house searches, maybe starting at the apartment next door to the one they had and working their way outwards to cover the WHOLE world. Would that prove to you that they wanted to find Madeleine? They are not allowed to launch a private investigation but I wonder if they will finally have to do that if the police really have given up.
The fact is, Paulette, that you and some others have made up your mind already on this story so NOTHING the McCanns do will be open to any interpretation other than a bad one. You say they are doing nothing to find Madeleine. What would you expect them to do?
I merely seek to show that a very different interpretation is very reasonable.
We have NO evidence that Madeleine was not snatched that night by an opportunist criminal who had been observing the McCanns’ movements and took his chance. If he (?) was part of a professional ring, it will have been very carefully organised. That theory fits with the known facts (if indeed we know anything at all) at least as well as any other theory. It also respects the important principle of ‘innocent until proved guilty.” we should defend that principle to our last breath. We never know when we might need it.

Also I think I have read the troll world a zillion times on this site, its not very original.

by the way i never sent you a long post, don’t know what you are talking about.

854,
oh brother again!!! you are funny.
September 19th, 2007 at 9:07 am
1028.
Thank you for a logical and cogent comments Karen. I agree with you 100%.
The tragedy is that Madeleine is still out there somewhere and the McCanns aren’t doing anything to find her except for more billboards, bracelets and posters.
It’s completely ridiculous.
The actions and non-actions of the McCanns is revolting and absolutely sickening. Normal healthy parents of a missing child do not say and do what the McCanns have done. You can be sure of that.

Abigail @ 1015,
First off I don’t find Gerry McCann physically, personality wise or spiritually attractive. I don’t find Kate’s peronality attractive either.
If you mean that they are attractive because their vocation is respectable or their income is nice then that simply falls flat for me. I’ve never been one to be attracted to anyone due to their income or community status.
My husband was financially poor when I fell in love with him and still is but it doesn’t matter to me one bit.
If you are being swayed in your opinion due to the fact that you believe they are “pretty” or because of their vocations then I think you need to study abuse against children, exploiters of children and just crimes in general more thoroughly.
If you are an American/North American then I suggest reading up on these cases of pretty, affluent &/or well respected people who committed heinous crimes:
http://www.crimelibrary.com/notorious_murders/family/lisa_steinberg/1.html
http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/weird/doctors/9.html

http://vanceholmes.com/court/trial_neulander.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wayne_Gacy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karla_Homolka
The Brits here could help you on Biritsh killers. Only Dr. Palmer and Shipman come to mind: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr_Shipman
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Palmer_%28murderer%29
Plus I think you may need to look up the definition of the word “logistics” because it doesn’t make sense in the context of your comment. Unless you jmeant to remark on the logistics of the Madeleine marketing by the McCanns but I don’t hink that is what you meant. Anyway, if I am wrong I apologize. For a clear definition on the word “logistics”: http://www.logisticsworld.com/logistics.htm
If you meant that you believe the McCann’s being involved in the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine illogical then I would seriously suggest researching the statistics on child abuse, murders, abductions, exploitation. The overwhelming evidence suggests just the opposite of your illogical argument.
For more information: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=9B01E0D8153EF936A35752C1A962958260
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_murder
http://missingchild.wordpress.com/2007/09/14/homicide-rates-in-the-us-infanticide/
Although stats from the articles above are pertaining to child murders in the UNited States I am most certain that the percentages are the nrealy the same in Western Europe (sorry Western Europeans - when it comes to child murders we are pretty much alike regardless of being east or west of the great pond).
The bloom is off the rose Abigail. Although I think it must be beautiful to live in your world I hope that you have a little more common sense than your post readily indicates.
It is one thing for children to believe this way. Children love and adore their parents and believe they are being protected and loved by them. Who can blame them? That’s what parents are supposed to do.
Kate and Gerry both let Madeleine down regardless if they had a direct hand in her alleged kidnapping. I don’t know why they were so irresponsible? Was it to save money? Was it because they didn’t care? Or was it because they believe the world opreates as you do Abigail? I don’t know for sure. What I do know is that they are negligent parents and are at the very least partially responsible for whatever has happened to Madeleine.
September 19th, 2007 at 8:55 am
My real problem with the McCanns is why do they have a P.R. Machine?
Why this massive publicity?
And how can it be Justice if they have so many rich and powerful friends?
There’s no point saying they’d do anything to get Madeleine back - they’re doing one thing - appearing in the media.
There’s no point saying you wouldn’t know how you’d react in this situation - hundreds of kids have gone missing over the years, no ordinary parents have ever used the media to turn themselves into celebrities before. Forget Kate’s inability to cry or Gerry’s perkiness - the Media whoring isn’t a normal reaction and no one can say it might be because it’s unique.

It is rather sad that this forum is open 24/7, sad because it means that the neanderthals from across the Atlantic get to participate - and what a lot of mindless garbage they offer.
How on earth have we allowed ourselves to become aligned with a nation of such supreme stupidity?
It is not pushing to it too far to say that the inane ramblings of the boy Bush are like pearls of wisdom compared to the dross the posters offer on here.
Please Uncle Sam - stick to laying waste to countries where you are not welcome and killing people who have done you no harm - that includes the ever increasing number of our soldiers you manage to hit with “friendly fire”.
September 19th, 2007 at 7:12 am
it is inconceivable that the mms harmed Madeleine
just the logistics, alone, make it impossible
but the main thing is their palpable, overwhelming grief—it is so obvious, especially in KM’s face and eyes
the flimsy “evidence” and all the concocted lies and slanderous stories are so ghastly
the MMs have triggered so much hatred
i suspect much of it is due to envy–they are nice looking, successful, etc…..
my own theory remains: Madeleine was murdered by an opportunistic killer just waiting to pounce
it happens often enough
she was probably killed the night she disappeared, and quickly disposed of
i still suspect Murat

Blah, that last post was irrelevant and now I’m reading about the Ramsey case. I need to stop before I start reading everything about every missing child and while being unable to do anything, just end up feeling incredibly depressed. So much for the safety of a satirical edged site (from overly serious depression)!
September 19th, 2007 at 4:30 am
“Historically, when a murder occurs in the home – absent clear evidence of an intruder – the police focus on the family members, and they’re usually right. ”
“The police investigators were stunned by how quickly John Ramsey had moved to retain separate defense counsel for both his wife and himself. With the law firm came private investigators who, without notifying the Boulder police, began conducting their own investigation of the crime on Dec. 27 by interviewing both the Whites and the Fernies. The results of these interviews were not shared with the police.”
“Mrs. Ramsey, how do you stand it that your daughter is dead and you are a possible suspect? How do you cope with it?
John Ramsey interjected this response.
Mr. Ramsey: Well, it’s - you know at first we were shocked, and then outraged, and then we understood statistically that it’s a sad state of affairs…that that’s apparently the majority of cases like this in our country family members or parents are ultimately involved so we accepted being suspects. But what concerned us and certainly still does concern us, at least up until yesterday, is that any time spent looking at us is time that’s wasted, and that in part, is why we brought in an investigative team to immediately look in other know there are other directions being looked at (sic).
Understanding that the police needed to eliminate them as suspects before going on to other possibilities, the Ramseys still refused to cooperate.”
The Ramsey’s took polygraph tests though, much later on, and were cleared of lying on the 2nd test. And some investigators today have cleared them of the crime. I guess, we’ll never really know, but yes, some of the actions in the McCann case seem to be similar. I hope Madeleine is found alive though, I really do.
September 19th, 2007 at 3:57 am
