Madeleine McCann: Clarence Mitchell Speaks, Make Madeleine History And Breastfeeding
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MAIL pages 10 and 11: “Madeleine cried for 18 hours a day. Kate tells of the special bond forged in the painful days of early childhood.”
Kate McCann is speaking with Portuguese magazine Flash!. This interview took place before Kate McCann was named as a suspect in Madeline’s disappearance. Kate says the first six months with Madeleine were “very difficult”. Madeleine had colic. “I had to carry her around permanently,” says Kate.
What does it mean, this interview that has “emerged”? That what you tell magazines can be taken out of context and used in evidence against you, or something else?
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns go straight to the top in search for powerful backers.”
Gordon Brown is being kept abreast of the investigation on Kate and Gerry McCann, possibly by reading the British press and watching the news bulletins.
(Is any MP still wearing a yellow ribbon?)
The McCanns have a new spokesman. He’s called Clarence Mitchell. He resigned as head of the Government’s Media Monitoring unit to take this new post.
Mr Mitchell once offered: “There’s a whole level of debate taking place online which simply didn’t exist before and departments feel they need to be fully engaged in that.”
Look out for Kate’s blog.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “THE TIDE TURNS.”
“McCanns WON’T be ordered back to Portugal says Judge”
“Gordon Brown briefed on the case”
“New spokesman will declare Gerry and Kate innocent today”
Clarence Mitchell says: “They have nothing whatever to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.” And as the McCann’s new spokesman he should know.
Pages 4 and 5: “RAY OF HOPE.”
Madeleine has not been found but Kate and Gerry McCann will not have to fly back to Portugal for more questioning.
On the downside sales of the “Look for Madeleine” wristband are not going well in Portugal. In “LOCALS REJECTS ‘FIND HER’ BRACELETS,” this year’s Make Poverty History band is being turned down at a car boot sales in Praia da Luz.
Says one ex-pat: “It’s as if they want to forget something so horrible happened.” Or buy something less with their money?
Says another: “We can’t understand how they can carry on jogging after losing Madeleine. Gerry went to a hairdressers a few weeks after she disappeared and continued tennis lessons. The Portuguese feel they should b hysterical.” But not the British, who understand reserve…
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE COPS SLAPPED DOWN. KATE BACKED BY JUDGE. Mum won’t be hauled back to Portugal.”
Judge Pedro Anjos Frias rejected Portuguese police calls for the McCanns to return. “He is thought to have ruled the case to flimsy to justify the move.” Or, to put it another way, he has not received sufficient evidence to be convinced of the need for a trial.
Pages 4 and 5: “COPS CASE COLLAPSING.”
And: “McCanns tell Brown: We have solid defence.” Gordon Brown’s reaction to this news is not known.
THE INDEPENDENT page 32: Thomas Sutcliffe says the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been “yoked by journalists to another kind of story – the primal faction of fairytale”. Here “the beautiful child is swallowed by something that has emerged from the dark”.
It is, is it not, every child’s worst nightmare.
Page 4: “Kate McCann ‘will not be reinterviewed in Portugal’.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE POLICE CASE FALLS APART.”
“Judge refuses to recall the McCanns”
“Impossible to detect sedatives in hair”
“But slurs against the parents continue”
Slurs?
Pages 8 and 9: “My struggles to control Madeleine – BY KATE MCCANN.”
As told to Flash! magazine. The twins arrive. “The worst thing is that she started to demand lots of attention, especially when I was breastfeeding them.”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE ALL SEVEN McCANN PALS IN FRAME.” The seven dwarves, to continue Mr Sutcliffe’s analogy?
“Cops set to name them as suspects.”
Pages 6 and 7: “BRIT PALS ALL SUSPECTS.”
The Tapas 9 are in the frame. This will put the lid – the tapas – on the case. Right?
“Maddie cops jet to UK as group face grilling” – Portuguese police are “planning” to come to the UK to continue the investigation. British police will conduct interviews.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 8: “McCanns to be interviewed by British police.”
Kate and Gerry are also keen to reach Gordon Brown. A source tell the paper: “The McCanns do not expect help or influence to be exerted on their behalf but want to get messages to the very top that they are innocent.”
Does Brown read the Telegraph?
THE GUARDIAN page 35: “Never mind the high street: Branson sells his Virgin Megastores.”
No mention of Madeleine McCann, granted, but this news one day after Branson pledged to help the parents clear their names looks like interesting timing?

Apparently there was some kind of doubt whether this clip should be allowed to stay on youtube (and it was possibly taken off before).

“Kate and Gerry McCann’s new spokesman said today he had given up his Government job to help the “innocent victims of a heinous crime”
Henious crime? How does he know that? Is there something he knows that he’s not telling the police? There’s no proof ANY crime has been committed yet, so this wild claim is only adding to all the speculation.
And surely if the McCanns can sue a paper for saying they’re guilty, can’t the police sue the McCanns for getting their spokesman to make such claims, when nothing has been proved?
Like the Sun columnist last week who said Maddie had been snatched “by a paedophile monster”.
Not, “MAY have been snatched”. No, he was pretty sure that’s what has happened. So he’s announcing this has happened, before the police have even solved the case!!
Seems like it’s one rule for the McCanns (whatever happened to maintaining a dignified silence btw? Me think they doth protest too much….) and one rule for everyone else. Especially those who DARE suggest they MAY have had a part to play.

The Real Stig, might I ask how you know the number of questions she was asked? Is it possible, that along with not knowing if she declined a specific number, we don’t really know anything at all?
You are correct with the lease statement, but they had said previously that they would not consider leaving without Madeleine.
Also, how do you know they do not have a lot of money? I suspect you are probably correct, but I do not know this as a fact.

in their latest public show kate looks preggers (she might have swallowed an extra strong mint but even so)
Would this be important to the case?

I have said before, IF it was one of mine (with 7 I might be tempted to rejoice, who knows, specially if I had £1 mill to console me…..what is the criminal compensation for a murdered child, (with body of course)) IF it was one of mine, I would immediately make everyone I knew take lie detectors, as I would suspect EVERYONE. I would also have kicked the door in of every apartment on that holiday village - arrest me if you dare! An innocent person, especially some one with kids, would say, you can see in my house that your child isn’t here. If that happened whilst I was on holiday, I would help look and expect my 5 oldest children to help too. (Oldest 3 are over 18 anyway - not many attempted abductions of 6′+ 20-somethings!)
A lie detector, though not admissible in court would help I think, make people believe what I say, and maybe trust me too. This thing that brandon flowers mentioned sounds good. If things got as far for me as they have for the Mc’s I would probably re-mortgage my house and have one of these tests done.
Had I known that a chav is a pikey or scally then I would have known instantly! I lived in a place where there were “pikey’s” living about 5 miles away. I know live in a place where the word “scally” is banded about quite freely!

so would most that is why we dont believe them

One Kate McC quote in the Mail today which wasn’t in the Inde interview…
“I know that what happened is not due to the fact of us leaving the children asleep.
I know it happened under other circumstances.”
that in it self is a big black hairy friggig lie

112 ~ macien…. thats what i’d like to know….why does a senior and influential civil servant give up his well paid job with all it’s perks to work for the mccanns. It is widely reported that sir clarence will not draw his salary from the Mfund. It is widely reported that the mccanns are on unpaid leave…so we can take it they aren’t paying him. Mcbranson only chipped in £100k and with the lawyers/QC et al that won’t go far.
We can summise that sir clarence has a book deal in mind… look at alistair campbell…he was at the inner circle of one of this countries worst periods of political integrity [or lack of it] but still got wads of cash for peddling his crap.
Sir clarence is no fool, but there is no doubt the mccanns are guilty of child neglect [and no sir clarence you cannot defened the indefensible] so why has this come about and more importantly who is paying.
So why are sir clarence and for that matter sir mcbranson, not using their engeries, resources and gazzillions of pounds actually finding MM alive [and thereby proving that mcgerry and his beautiful wife are innocent ~ well innocent of MM disappearance at least]. This is a curious state of affairs.
Take for example those two life long friends of the beautiful kate who came out at the weekend to show their support, proclaiming that the gorgeous kate was a wonderful mother. The report said thay had travelled down to london from liverpool to show their support. Now ask your self did they pay for themselves …not bloody likely…why couldn’t they have said that from liverpool…communications do exist even up north.
More importantly why go to london. If you are life long friends and want to express your undying support why not go to rotherly and stand shoulder to shoulder with the wonderfull Kate,….. for christ sakes the worlds press are encamped there at the moment.
No this case has taken an unusal turn. The leaks to the Portuguese press have dried up ….mainly because the judge is taking his time…..so the team pr mccann are filling the news vacuum.
But the bottom line is….the mccanns are guilty… child neglect i mean… so whats in it for Sir CM et al….?
September 18th, 2007 at 10:36 am
40..Rab… Indeed I am surprised they have not got Alistair Campbell on their team.
The whole media outpouring and rants and rages and foul play calling ,and calling in MPs and VIPs is the very thing that has caused people’s eyes to squint in disbelief. roll in suspicion as it is unheard of to have this level of electioneering going on over one missing girl.
Well except the readers of Mail and Times.. then again who knows how many doubters and fence sitters have NOT had their comments printed.?
September 18th, 2007 at 10:36 am
1 judge dread
Here we go again. The allegation that kate refused to answer 40 questions, as far as I am aware, is from Portuguese newspaper reports and is just an ‘allegation’. Can someone show me a link showing the PJ officially stated she refused to answer 40 questions?
Kate was questioned for 11 hours straight, and it didn’t end until after midnight - I have read no reports that they all took a break for a long leisurely meal.
The following day she returned for more questioning and was made a formal suspect, allowing her legal representation and a right to silence. In all that time they got through 22 questions. If you assume a further 5 hours of qustioning, that’s 1.46 questions per hour, so a further 40 questions will only take another 58hrs 40min at that rate.
Perhaps when told there were 40 more questions , they asked their lawyer if they could take rest from it and he said ’sure, you’ve been made suspects, you don’t have to answer anything, just pack your bags and go.’
Now remember, the McCanns lease had expired, that was partly why they announced the would be returning to the UK.
People go on and on about all the money they have access to but it’s bullshit. They aren’t infinitely wealthy and have not been drawing on the find Madeline fund for living expenses, Gerry is on unpaid leave. This ‘holiday’ from hell must be costing them a fortune financially, let alone in human terms. Apart from emotional reasons for wanting to return home, they may well have sound financial ones as well.

129 & 130
My opinion is it was an accident, the children were sedated, they had two choices, be honest or fabricate a story what other option did they have.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:33 am
I thought Chav was the original word for the child of a ‘traveller’?
Must look it up later.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:33 am
129 me too, I dont think they killed her accident or not, I do think though that they are hiding something , hence the hesitation to comply with the PJ,
September 18th, 2007 at 10:31 am
If it was my child missing and i was innocent i would have right off offered my DNA ,insisted on a lie detector test and answered All and every put to me before even being a suspect.. in order to ensure I was in clear and not hold up investigations and search.

A real Chav will have a framed copy of their ASBO hanging above the bed.
A direct genetic line has been traced through the mothers’ DNA to the Sharon and Tracy phenomenon of the 1970s and 1980s.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:29 am
113 Judge Dread. No but they’d jail the investigators or get you arrested on an international warrant.
Never understimate the PJ. I’ve posted befre about the Michael Cook case in the eighties….
September 18th, 2007 at 10:28 am
109 - SSS, come on now, wasn’t it you who said “I am getting a little tired of people reading what they want to read rather than reading what is written.”
You know I never said anything like that. That’s not on.

I can understand that PR would be useful getting your message across about looking for Madeleine while in Portugal - but why have they got a top civil servant as their PF guru with daily access to the PM now they are in the UK?
September 18th, 2007 at 10:25 am
Chav, Charv/Charver (male) and Chavette (female) (’ch’ pronounced as in chair) are mainly derogatory slang terms in the United Kingdom for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions derived from American Hip-hop such as imitation gold jewellery and designer clothing, combined with elements of working class British street fashion. The term appeared in mainstream dictionaries in 2005
