Madeleine McCann: Clarence Mitchell Speaks, Make Madeleine History And Breastfeeding
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MAIL pages 10 and 11: “Madeleine cried for 18 hours a day. Kate tells of the special bond forged in the painful days of early childhood.”
Kate McCann is speaking with Portuguese magazine Flash!. This interview took place before Kate McCann was named as a suspect in Madeline’s disappearance. Kate says the first six months with Madeleine were “very difficult”. Madeleine had colic. “I had to carry her around permanently,” says Kate.
What does it mean, this interview that has “emerged”? That what you tell magazines can be taken out of context and used in evidence against you, or something else?
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns go straight to the top in search for powerful backers.”
Gordon Brown is being kept abreast of the investigation on Kate and Gerry McCann, possibly by reading the British press and watching the news bulletins.
(Is any MP still wearing a yellow ribbon?)
The McCanns have a new spokesman. He’s called Clarence Mitchell. He resigned as head of the Government’s Media Monitoring unit to take this new post.
Mr Mitchell once offered: “There’s a whole level of debate taking place online which simply didn’t exist before and departments feel they need to be fully engaged in that.”
Look out for Kate’s blog.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “THE TIDE TURNS.”
“McCanns WON’T be ordered back to Portugal says Judge”
“Gordon Brown briefed on the case”
“New spokesman will declare Gerry and Kate innocent today”
Clarence Mitchell says: “They have nothing whatever to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.” And as the McCann’s new spokesman he should know.
Pages 4 and 5: “RAY OF HOPE.”
Madeleine has not been found but Kate and Gerry McCann will not have to fly back to Portugal for more questioning.
On the downside sales of the “Look for Madeleine” wristband are not going well in Portugal. In “LOCALS REJECTS ‘FIND HER’ BRACELETS,” this year’s Make Poverty History band is being turned down at a car boot sales in Praia da Luz.
Says one ex-pat: “It’s as if they want to forget something so horrible happened.” Or buy something less with their money?
Says another: “We can’t understand how they can carry on jogging after losing Madeleine. Gerry went to a hairdressers a few weeks after she disappeared and continued tennis lessons. The Portuguese feel they should b hysterical.” But not the British, who understand reserve…
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE COPS SLAPPED DOWN. KATE BACKED BY JUDGE. Mum won’t be hauled back to Portugal.”
Judge Pedro Anjos Frias rejected Portuguese police calls for the McCanns to return. “He is thought to have ruled the case to flimsy to justify the move.” Or, to put it another way, he has not received sufficient evidence to be convinced of the need for a trial.
Pages 4 and 5: “COPS CASE COLLAPSING.”
And: “McCanns tell Brown: We have solid defence.” Gordon Brown’s reaction to this news is not known.
THE INDEPENDENT page 32: Thomas Sutcliffe says the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been “yoked by journalists to another kind of story – the primal faction of fairytale”. Here “the beautiful child is swallowed by something that has emerged from the dark”.
It is, is it not, every child’s worst nightmare.
Page 4: “Kate McCann ‘will not be reinterviewed in Portugal’.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE POLICE CASE FALLS APART.”
“Judge refuses to recall the McCanns”
“Impossible to detect sedatives in hair”
“But slurs against the parents continue”
Slurs?
Pages 8 and 9: “My struggles to control Madeleine – BY KATE MCCANN.”
As told to Flash! magazine. The twins arrive. “The worst thing is that she started to demand lots of attention, especially when I was breastfeeding them.”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE ALL SEVEN McCANN PALS IN FRAME.” The seven dwarves, to continue Mr Sutcliffe’s analogy?
“Cops set to name them as suspects.”
Pages 6 and 7: “BRIT PALS ALL SUSPECTS.”
The Tapas 9 are in the frame. This will put the lid – the tapas – on the case. Right?
“Maddie cops jet to UK as group face grilling” – Portuguese police are “planning” to come to the UK to continue the investigation. British police will conduct interviews.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 8: “McCanns to be interviewed by British police.”
Kate and Gerry are also keen to reach Gordon Brown. A source tell the paper: “The McCanns do not expect help or influence to be exerted on their behalf but want to get messages to the very top that they are innocent.”
Does Brown read the Telegraph?
THE GUARDIAN page 35: “Never mind the high street: Branson sells his Virgin Megastores.”
No mention of Madeleine McCann, granted, but this news one day after Branson pledged to help the parents clear their names looks like interesting timing?

I feel soon they will be known as the McDids

My kids ask for junk food and TV dinners, and at times I feel bad as I don’t approve of eating Macdonalds as part of a staple diet, so I do occasionally buy a ready made lasagne from Marks and Spencer or Morrisons.
Generally though, I think it better to teach them how to cook and to eat wholesome filling food. I know that one of my son’s is teased at school as he takes things like chicken, salad, coleslaw and fruit to school for his lunch instead of buying some chips and standing around on the streets eating it.
I think the problem is, when I started middle school, we had proper Home Economics lessons where we taught about budgeting etc as well as cooking, where as by the time I left there for high school, the curriculum had changed and it was food and nutrition and now, it is Food Tech and I know that for last year’s GCSE, it focused on making pizza as one of the assignments.

It’s not harsh at all. Benidorm, Magaluf, Lloret etc. have allowed themselves to become little British ghettos. Those places don’t exist in France or Italy because those countries don’t pander to Brit culture.
You are right in that you can go off the beaten track and find nice places in Spain but it doesn’t alter the fact of those Spanish/Anglo resorts being transformed into Blackpool abroad.
Brits in those places embarrass me and that’s why I avoid them.

You either don’t live in the UK or have been asleep for a while. Big Brother arrived some time ago - the sheep graze on, blissfully unaware and content so long as the grass tastes sweet and theres plenty of it.

548. Kate said “play for Madeleine. She was lovely”. Was?
I really did hear her say play instead of pray.

I think that’a a bit harsh on Spain, go off the beaten track and it’s great, the cities are great, e.g. Barcelona, Valencia. Go to Benidorm and you get what you deserve to be fair. The first thing I ask when considering a holiday is: “Where don’t the British go?”.

The mealtime is the key to a good family environment. It always has been.
The proliferation in TV dinners and fast food has destroyed a lot of that culture in the UK and other countries like the USA where I live. It’s sad but true but the Mediterranean culture is something to be envied.
Whenever I go to France or Italy, I like to absorb myself in that and it’s one reason why I stopped going to Spain. Spain has allowed itself to be run by boozy Brits who want to make ghettos of Blackpool or Skegness abroad.

Yep, read that - comment still stands - free speech and all that.

Incidentally, what has happened to 90% of the McCann interviews on Youtube?
There’s hardly any left - most are the slushy, ballad infested, vomit-inducing movies made by people who believe all the tabloids.
I suspect a lot of the early videos of interviews are being removed because they are coming under more and more scrutiny.

536 I don’t think I want a job working for Che Guevara, so will decline the (generous) offer!
In my home too Stevo, we sit round the table (dodging the food bombs) and eat and talk about how our days have been and I regale my bunch with Tales from the Anorak! Every night, no matter how tired I am, I always without fail cook dinner (except weekends, as we go away and so we eat out).
The family that eats together, stays together!

Then I appologise wholeheartedly - sorry.

The phrase “innocent until proven guilty” is a legal term that means a suspect retains his civic liberty until he is proven guilty in a court of law. In the McCann’s case, it has kept them from being tossed into the slammer since parents are unfortunately known to be the culprits in the vast majority of missing children cases.
As a legal term “innocent” does not mean a suspect is actually innocent. The McCann’s are clearly not innocent of child neglect. On the day their daughter was reported as missing, they were guilty of extreme negligence.
The case is still just another missing person report. Without strong evidence of parental involvement or an abduction, it will stay on the books as just another missing person report.

Good for you with 7 kids. I don’t know you but I’m almost certain that from your other posts in here that you would never leave your kids to go out enjoying yourself while leaving any of your 7 alone in a room in a strange country.
When you say in a short sentence “the kids were left alone on May 3″, it doesn’t sound much does it?
Put in perspective the number of things that could have gone wrong by doing that and you could fill volumes. What if Madeleine climbed on one of the twins and suffocated them? What if Madeleine tried climbing on furniture? What if Madeleine put something in her mouth and choked? What if Madeleine opened the door and wandered off? What if Madeleine started a fire?
Didn’t the McCann’s mention something about leaving things unlocked in case of fire? Oh? So they were thinking as responsible parents then eh?
Their story and excuses don’t make any kind of sense whatsoever.

527 ~ Stevo…. blimey are my alter ego….. I’m mid forties [take note oh sss honey pie] and your words came out my lips…. the moral decline of the youth in england is no role models… who do they have …that fkg numbskull jordan ….goody et al…
and thats why i’m so incensed about the mccanns… bad parenting.. but they want us all to feel so sorry for them… like shit i do….
there’s only 1 person i feel any sympathy for … and it s 3 yr old kid called madeleine mccann… so sir clarence about for now [until his judge gives his directions at least] you just STFU!
foot note : 533 - research the libel laws… the publisher is just as culpable [whether he likes sit or not]….
September 18th, 2007 at 3:46 pm
I’ve mentioned before, the PJ said way back in the beginning that because the family were on the property where the children were no offence was committed…. maybe they lied? Oooops I forgot, the PJ don’t lie!

I am not here to give Anorak legal advice and I do not do so. However, the very fact that Anorak have a moderator would seem to make it extremely difficult for the site not be liable as the publisher.
The dangerous postings are those that present theories/assertions/speculation as fact. Obviously I am not going to repeat the libel by reproducing examples.

Seymour sweetheart , we are here to stop gratutious insults and keep fights sort of under control. The site is hosted in the US, where the poster is held liable and not the site. Otherwise each thread would just have about 3 posts left intact.
We have been taken to task by various posters on this topic, when we advise them they are liable and would they like the post moderated and we are told not to ‘censor’, so we don’t. Then we get a request when passions have calmed to alter the offending post. Its very tempting at times to leave it as it is.
September 18th, 2007 at 3:42 pm
Prosecution for neglect will suffice methinks. Especially if found guilty. If leaving a hyperactive 3 year old out of view in an unlocked apartment when it’s dark isn’t neglectful then I’m Che Guavara.

I agree Stevo. The amount of times I have heard people say about their kids “They could be worse!”
Surely we should be saying “Do better, strive to be better”.
When I tell people that I have 7 kids, the first thing they say is “how old are you, you’re not old enough” then “do you work”.
Do we live in a society where working if you have a large family is unheard of? Of where having one man father ALL your children makes you a freak? Or where working hard to support yourself and build something for yourself and your family makes you an oddity?
Sometimes I think so because that is how I feel sometimes! The 2 children who have now left full time education both live alone, support themselves and have good jobs.
It is a shame that not all parents encourage their kids to aim high, but rather say, “it could be worse”. Don’t they realise it is worse?
September 18th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
525 ~ of course there’s no need to panic yet….. if the wonderful and caring mccanns were sucessfully prosecuted for the direct involvement in the disappearance of their wee beautiful madeleine [no not maddy ...madeleine] then its a free for all …..need me to prove the point i am making….erm let me see… anyone remember Jeffery Archers glory then sudden fall from grace.
But if the mccanns are never proven to be directly involved in the disappearance of madeleine mccann then its an entirely different matter.
for the record OfT but AM = on the fence but anti mccann… and should you have any doubts anti mccann is not libelous…
Anorak MODS & ADMIN: your input here would be interesting

I meant to add that those Mediterranean families have that culture of the whole family sitting down to dinner and taking hours over it. The table becomes the prime meeting place for a family and not only does it promote good eating habits, it allows everyone to interact.
Why go on a family holiday with your kids but then you feel you have to go out socialising without them? It’s beyond me to get into the mind of anyone who would even half think that was right to leave your kids and do that.
The irony is that Portuguese people will not have any more ideas why you’d do that than me and I’m a Brit. I don’t know why my fellow Brits did it either.
